Dealing with illness, a Frisco HS Basketball player makes a play no one will soon forget.

It's senior night at Frisco Wakeland High School, and it just happens to be the biggest game of the season.  The Wolverines need a win against Heritage High School to make the playoffs.
               
Senior forward Justin Nicholas is returning to the court for the first time since December.  Win or lose, this will be his last game.
               
"I've missed it a lot.  I've even had dreams about playing," said Nicholas.  "You know, you never realize how much you miss something until it's gone."

Midway through the basketball season, Justin was rushed to the hospital after finding lumps on his body.  On Christmas eve, he had emergency surgery for testicular cancer.

"When we found out it was just like 'wow,'" said the senior.  "You never know what could happen, you never know when your life could end.  You just take little things for granted like playing basketball."

Surgery was successful, but the cancer had spread.  Justin is through three rounds of chemotherapy, with one more to go.

"At first, it was really hard," said Justin's mom Gayla Nicholas.  "There would be nights where he and I were at the hospital where he'd become very emotional, which was very tough.  But he has very good spirits, a very good attitude and he's handled this extremely well."

Through chemotherapy, Justin's health is improving.  His basketball coach wanted to recognize that progress on senior night.

"Since it was taken from him so suddenly, I knew coach Harris over at Heritage would be completely on board with the fact if we could work something out, get him in the game, let him score a bucket and just let him get in the box score with his teammates one last time," said Wakeland basketball coach Brent Benningfield.

To a standing ovation, Justin was welcomed back to the court and introduced as a starter.  The two teams allowed Nicholas to take the ball and score the game's first basket.  Wakeland then let Heritage score an uncontested layup to tie the game at two.  Nine seconds into the game, Justin left the court knowing his varsity career was over.

On a night that celebrated Justin's determination, the basketball game had a similar theme.  Wakeland hit a game winning bucket in the final minute.  Final score, Wakeland 67, Heritage 65.

"It was awesome, a lot better than I thought it would be with everyone behind me," says Justin. 

"It was such an amazing night and I want to just thank everyone for coming out and supporting me.  It means so much to me."

Police are questioning two men in the murder of an 18-year-old Chicago woman who was killed Friday in a north suburb, officials said Sunday.

Janay McFarlane was shot and killed while leaving a store in North Chicago, hours after her younger sister attended President Barack Obama's speech on Friday addressing gun violence in Chicago. 

McFarlane's mother, Angela Blakely, said McFarlane was not the intended target and that the bullet was intended for a friend she was with. Blakely said McFarlane had asked two male friends to go with her to the store because she didn't feel safe walking alone.

Two men followed McFarlane and her friends out of the store, police said, and one of them fired nine rounds, missing his target and hitting McFarlane in the head.

McFarlane's family said she talked a lot about the death of another slain teen, Hadiya Pendleton, in the days before her sister attended Obama's Chicago speech at Hyde Park Academy High School.

McFarlane's younger sister, 14-year-old Destini Warren, who attended the speech, recalled McFarlane saying she was "excited for [Destini]" to see the president.

Warren said the president's speech "really connected to what was going on" and she "didn't expect that to happen."

Warren also did not expect the speech to relate to her so personally.

"We could go to each other for everything," she said. "We were more of best friends than we were sisters."

Blakely said McFarlane was "her little buddy."

"Me and Janay were so close," she said. "It was always 'mommy, go with me' or 'mommy, let's do this.'"

McFarlane was a senior at the World Changers Leadership Academy and was scheduled to graduate in June. She had plans to go to culinary school.

Blakely said she and McFarlane were supposed to go prom dress shopping later this week.

McFarlane is survived by her sister, mother and 3-month-old son, Jayden.

Russian Meteorite Catches Scientists by Surprise

A 10-ton meteorite blasted through the sky above central Russia Friday morning. It triggered an explosion that sent fireballs and debris across a 200-square-mile area. Hundreds of people were injured, mostly by broken glass from the shock waves caused by the impact. Gordon Tokumatsu reports from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on Feb. 15, 2013.

South Floridians who happened to be looking in the right place at the right time Sunday night saw one spectacular light show – possibly a sporadic meteor.

The Coast Guard began getting flooded with phone calls about 7:30 p.m., with reports of folks seeing flare-like objects from Jacksonville to Key West, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Sabrina Laberdesque.

People called in, describing the flares "as orange or red fireballs in the sky," Laberdesque said. The display was limited to the sky: No injuries were reported, Laberdesque said.

A sporadic meteor is basically a rocky object that comes from the asteroid belt, said Mike Hankey, operations manager for the American Meteor Society, based in Genesee, N.Y. The group logged 27 reports within about the first two hours of the event, he said.

"This is a lot of reports to come in quickly," Hankey said. 

Gauging by the reports, it happened somewhere over the ocean.

"These fireballs are common," Hankey said. "It's rare for any one person to see one more than once or twice in their lifetime. But on any given night, it might happen somewhere in the globe a few times in a day."

Hankey added: "People should not be scared of the sky falling or anything at all."

Fireball Streaks Across Bay Area Sky

Amanda Mayer, of West Palm Beach, said she saw something in the sky and said she thought it was somebody flashing a light. She said she hit record on her camera.

"I was like, 'Wow! That's weird," Mayer said. "I just started videotaping, and that's when it happened."

It turned out to be good timing: The ball of light appeared as she recorded, she said.

"I was pretty sure it was a meteor because of everything else that's been happening," Mayer said.

The Coast Guard said it had suspected Sunday's sighting was a meteor shower, but Hankey disagreed. "Meteor showers usually are much dimmer and faster moving," Hankey said.

After a meteor exploded overhead near Chelyabinsk, Russia, on Friday, reportedly injuring more than 1,000 people, many people elsewhere in the world have wrongly thought that streaks they've seen in the sky, including planes, are meteors, Hankey said.

"We're getting a lot more false reports," Hankey said.

But with false reports, the group tends to receive only one report describing an incident, Hankey said. If the same event is reported over and over in five or 10 minutes, then that's more likely to be "a legitimate event," or sporadic meteor, Hankey said. 

In South Florida Sunday night, the Coast Guard found that the light streak vanished in an instant. The Coast Guard sent out a helicopter to check out a report of a flare near the MacArthur Causeway in Miami, but found nothing there, Laberdesque said.

The daughter of the detective attacked by Miami fugitive Alberto Morales, spoke out at a news conference on Friday pleading for the public's help in locating Morales.

Grapevine police said in his final moments of life, 42-year-old Alberto Morales attempted to do what he had done successfully in the past, evade capture. 

But this time, he ultimately failed.

"Officers surrounded Mr. Morales," Sgt. Robert Eberling with Grapevine police said. "They gave him commands to surrender. He failed to do so. He failed to display his hands, He kept his hands concealed and when Morales lunged at the officers,  they subsequently shot him fearing for their safety."

Officers were concerned because they said he was armed with sticks. "He was very skilled and crafty as far as making makeshift edge weapons inside of prison and I think that was certainly in the forethought of the officers who encountered him today," Sgt. Eberling said.

Since Morales' daring escape Monday night using a pair of eyeglasses, officers said he ditched the shorts he was wearing and found other clothing. On Saturday morning, when he was discovered, he was wearing long pants. He was also less than four miles north of the Wal-Mart parking lot where he escaped.

The latest and last search began after Grapevine Police received a burglary call from a home in the same area late Friday night. Officers said men's clothing and jewelry were missing from the home.
 

"We are somewhat surprised that someone was able to, especially with the weather, the terrain up there, that someone was able to remain hidden," said Sgt. Eberling.

"It's been a long arduous week with everyone involved in this investigation," said Sgt. Eberling. "I think for the most the part the officers are relieved that we no longer have a threat out there." 

Detective Pardinas Released

The Miami-Dade, Florida Police Department said Detective Jaime Pardinas walked out of Dallas' Parkland Memorial Hospital on Saturday and is now resting at a Dallas/Fort Worth area hotel.

Doctors said he is not allowed to travel home to Miami until Monday at the earliest.

On a 911 call released last week, Pardinas can be heard breathing heavily as he tells the operator that he's been stabbed. He described Morales' height, weight and appearance and then added: "He's a schizophrenic."
 

In a news conference at Parkland Hospital Wednesday, authorities said Pardinas was stabbed very deeply in the neck and back and that he suffered a collapsed lung.

Reaction From South Florida

Pardinas' sister Cyntia Shand told NBC News in Miami she is relieved to hear Morales is no longer alive.  "I personally feel ashamed anyone has to die but this man [Morales] was such a criminal, it's actually a relief that he won't hurt anyone or cause any further terror," Shand said.

She also spoke about her concerns for the community of Grapevine. "Could you imagine the terror that, that community (Grapevine) had to endure with lock down in schools and communities that felt threatened? It's over. It's a relief actually."

Shand added that her brother, Pardinas, is recovering well. "He sounds strong, he's cracking jokes," Shand said. "But his main concern is to protect our family, our privacy.. just to make sure we maintain our family closeness." "He's our hero.. but let him be the public's hero."

The police department in Miami-Dade released the following statement in response to news that Morales had been killed.:

"I want to thank the Grapevine Police Department, Fort Worth Police Department, the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force, and all other law enforcement agencies, along with the city of Dallas, and the entire state of Texas,for putting an end to the manhunt.  I would also like to thank the local EMS service and Parkland Memorial Hospital for their skilled and proficient life-saving care.

To our Detective Jaime Pardinas, I commend you for your will to live through this horrible event that you've endured, and we look forward to your safe return home.

To the victims who suffered at the hands of this diabolical individual, may you now have peace knowing that he will not be able to hurt you or anyone else again.

May God continue to guide us and protect us as we continue to fight the battle of good verses evil."

A Downtown Dallas ranch is now home to a rare white buffalo.

Many stop by Fuel City to buy gas and tacos and see native Texas plants and animals, including five of the state's biggest longhorns.

On Saturday, "Lone Star" moved in. She is a 4-year-old white American bison. The rare animal is considered sacred in many Native American cultures.  It is a symbol of hope and rebirth.

NBC DFW learned the white buffalo is pregnant and expected to give birth this summer.

Fuel City is located 801 South Riverfront Blvd. It includes eight acres on the banks of the Trinity River at the interchange of I-30 and I-35E.

High Speed Chase After Shooting In Rockwall

The suspect in the shooting lead police on a 45 minute chase through several North Texas cities.

A Rockwall mother of three children died Saturday. Police believe Jessica Aguilar's ex-boyfriend, former Hunt County Constable Anthony DeWayne Lewis killed her before leading police on a pursuit and gunfight.

NBC DFW talked with the Aguilar's son, Jaime Puente. He said Lewis approached his mother at his sister's basketball game hours before she died on Saturday night.

"He wasn't being violent," Puente said. "My mom was just trying to be civil... She let him stay there."

According to Puente, Aguilar and Lewis met about five years ago at work.  She was an apartment complex manager and he worked security. They had recently split.

"I just had that feeling that there something wrong," Puente said. "He got mad way too easy." 

He adds that Lewis was upset at the fact that Aguilar had started dating again.

Lewis served as constable in Commerce, until he was defeated in the recent Republican Primary. He left office January 1.  His law enforcement experience was a factor in the officers' response.

"It certainly made us consider our tactics given that he knows how we operate," Rockwall police Sgt. Aaron McGrew, with Rockwall Police said.

Once the chase ended in Greenville, a standoff ensued.

"The suspect produced a handgun and pointed it to the direction of the officers," Sgt. McGrew said. "Officers from several agencies opened fire at that point."

Aguilar's companion, Francisco Delacruz, was taken to Baylor Hospital and is expected to survive.

Lewis is at Parkland Hospital in Dallas in critical condition.  He is charged with one count of murder on one million dollars bond and one count of attempted murder with a $500,000 bond.

A large cloud of smoke over an unincorporated part of Tarrant County could be seen miles away on Sunday.

On scene, Tarrant County Sheriff's deputies believe it may have been a result of sparks from a train on the tracks.

Two fires are believed to be responsible for the large cloud of smoke.  They broke out along two stretches of FM 1187, southeast of Benbrook Lake.

The smoke was so thick it enveloped nearby homes.

"You could see the flames coming off tree tops when you were up a little further up the road," said Terry Covington. "It got so dense you couldn't see 50 yards."

The fire was across the road from Renee Lewis's home.

"We called 911," Lewis said. There was a lot of smoke, they warned us we might have to take off, packed four of the dogs and went down the road where I could breathe a little better."

The Tarrant County fire marshal is still investigating. No word on how many acres were burned as a result.

Ex-LAPD officer-turned-fugitive Christopher Dorner, who went on a deadly shooting rampage and then died after a shootout and fire last week, first tried to charm fishermen in San Diego into giving him a ride to Mexico, sources told NBC 7 San Diego.

Dorner, 33, led authorities on a massive manhunt after allegedly killing an Irvine, Calif., couple and a Riverside police officer in a crime spree across Southern California that began on Feb. 3.

Dorner's deadly crimes were allegedly part of a revenge-filled plot he outlined in an online manifesto targeting law enforcement officers and their families.

Authorities searched for Dorner all over Southern California — from Irvine to National City — and led extensive checkpoints at the San Ysidro border, believing Dorner was trying to flee into Mexico.

Fishermen at Driscoll Wharf told NBC 7 San Diego exclusively that Dorner was on the pier near Nimitz and Harbor Island Drive on Feb. 5 trying to charm his way into a boat ride to Mexico.

"He kept saying he wanted to go fishing off Mexico. I said 'Mexico? That's kinda weird. You could go fishing on the bay,'" said Jeremy Smith, a local commercial fisherman.

Smith spoke exclusively with NBC 7 San Diego on Saturday night.

Smith and others at the dock said Dorner was willing to pay $200 to $400 for someone to take him out to sea. He told the fishermen he was going to be deployed to Afghanistan and just wanted to go fishing in Mexico first.

But at this pier, far away from popular fishing charters, most people were making repairs on their boats, not ready to go to sea.

Smith offered to show him around a luxury yacht that was for sale docked at the pier. But he asked him to remove the military style boots Dorner was wearing to keep the white carpeting clean. Dorner declined.

"Maybe he had a gun," Smith guessed. "Usually people want to see inside."

Dorner's request for a ride surprised some local fishermen, including Roy Sherman.

"I've been down here for 40 years and he's the first guy that came down here and asked for a ride," said Sherman.

San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown said she was not aware of this particular Dorner sighting in San Diego.

"We're not going to discuss details of an ongoing investigation," Brown said, and referred questions about the incident to the Irvine Police Department.

Several other law enforcement sources — not in the San Diego Police Department — confirmed the man described by local fishermen was likely Dorner.

Dorner did spend time in San Diego between Feb. 4 and Feb. 6.

A surveillance video taken behind an auto parts store in National City on Feb. 4 shows Dorner tossing bullets, a uniform and other items that linked him to the Irvine double-homicide into a dumpster.

After spending an hour at the pier the next day, the fishermen said Dorner left, but returned with fish tacos for Smith, hoping that would convince the fisherman to help him find a charter.

The witnesses reported Dorner was very friendly, always with a smile on his face, calling himself "Mike."

The man who called himself "Mike" told Smith a story about a friend who was having problems with the police and said his friend had been fired.

"I think he was talking about himself, now that I think about it," added Smith.

Dorner eventually left peacefully without his ride to Mexico, the group of fisherman said.

Driscoll Wharf is adjacent to Naval Base San Diego on North Harbor drive.

Smith said Dorner returned to the wharf on Feb. 6 but still couldn't find anyone to take him to Mexican waters.

That same day, a man fitting Dorner's description tried to steal a boat from a San Diego marina, according to officials. An 81-year-old man on the boat was tied up but uninjured. The would-be boat thief was unable to steal the boat and fled.

Later that night, police issued Dorner's description, and the fishermen said they notified authorities of their encounter.

Today, fishermen on Pier 6 at Driscoll Wharf are amazed the kind man who brought them fish tacos on Feb. 5 was the dangerous fugitive accused of fatally shooting four people, including a police officer and a sheriff's deputy.

The 10-day manhunt for Dorner ended on Feb. 12.

After barricading himself in a Big Bear-area cabin, he died of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department officials said. That cabin went up in flames during a shootout between Dorner and officers, and the fugitive's charred remains were later found inside.

An overnight fire destroyed a large home in Dalworthington Gardens Monday morning.

Fire was shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived at the home in the 3600 block of Orchid Lane. Four other departments from Pantego, Arlington, Forest Hill and Kennedale, helped fight the fire.

Five people and three dogs were inside the home. All made it out okay. Strong winds did cause problems for firefighters.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
