Paige Gomez goes to the State Fair of Texas every year, and has always hit up the "kiddie" rides.

This year, on the last Friday of the season, Gomez on a dare, hopped on the stratosphere.

She didn't get off the ride for two hours, not because she didn't want to but because she couldn't. Due to an electrical malfunction, the ride stopped about 200 feet in the air.

"When it stopped up there I thought that's how procedure was, and time passed, and time passed and we were still up there, I started freaking out," said Gomez

It didn't help that Gomez has a fear of heights, was alone and without her cell phone either.

"I was just scared it was going to drop, that was my concern, bc I've watched too many movies I guess," she said.

The Stratosphere has had problems in the past in other states, but for Fair organizers here in Texas, an issue this serious was a first.

"We had a much shorter ride, that did stall and they were able to bring them down, fire and rescue, that was probably 15-20 minutes from top to end that may have been 6-7 years ago," explained Sue Gooding with the fair.

Now, as that ride is inspected, organizers will decide if it comes back next year. Gomez will be back, she'll stay away from the rides though.

"I don't think I can trust it, I think I'll stick with fried foods."

Red, white and gold balloons illuminated the dark North Texas skies as part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's "Light the Night" walk in Plano.

Each balloon serves as a beacon of awareness.

"Individuals come and they walk either in remembrance of someone who they've lost to blood cancer or in honor of someone who is battling blood cancer," said Kacy Hensley, the director of Light the Night.

Among the hundreds of supporters who walked, there are the survivors like three-year old Cutler Fricke.

Fricke was six-months-old he was diagnosed with leukemia forcing him to spend the rest of his first year of life undergoing treatment.

"It's very difficult being a six month old; he can't talk or tell you when something is hurting," Melanie Fricke, his mother, said.

The Fricke family has participated in the Light the Night walk for the past three years.

Others were participating in memory of their loved ones.

Tom Yolke had been married to his wife, Sherry, for 48 years. She died last year following a nine-year battle with leukemia.

"When you come out here, there are so many people that are in the same boat as you are -- that are also hurting that are also missing someone and they want to help too," Yoke said.

This year, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has raised more than a quarter of a million dollars and more than 2,000 people have signed up to walk.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will hold two more walks: Sunday, Oct. 21 in Fort Worth at the West 7th street development and an Oct. 28 walk at the Main Street Garden Park in Dallas. Both events begin at 7 p.m.

NBC 5 is a proud sponsor of the "Light the Night" walks.

There were smiles all around as congregants enjoyed coffee and bagels before Sunday morning's service at Crosspointe Church in Carrollton.

The new surroundings in the same space off Parker Road include a larger theater for services and concerts, a better sound system and an expanded art gallery.  This is perfect for Crosspointe, a congregation that calls itself the "intersection of faith, art and community."

All this good from something that started out really bad. A lightning strike in June destroyed the theater two years to the day after the church moved in.

"It was definitely a blessing," said church member Luther Phillips. "It wasn't even in disguise. It wouldn't have been my choice of the way to do things but it [the damage from the lightning strike] definitely helped out."

"It's never a bad thing to be able to re-evaluate where we are, where to go and how we can reach and grow as a community," said fellow congregant Courtney Schoebel.

Since the storm, the church held services outdoors and in other spaces until Sunday.

"I think we've learned how difficult it is to give up control," said Pastor David Wahlstedt.  "We love to control circumstances, we love to control our environments and when something like this happens all of that is gone and you really do have to trust that' God's plan is perfect."

On Sunday, friends and classmates at the Mansfield ISD's Timberview High School hosted a memorial service.  They reflected on the lives of 15-year old Carlos Marquez and 17-year old Kimberly Pimental.

"It's been a year, we can reflect some good thoughts," Elizabeth Cordero, a friend of Pimental said.

For the first time since the crash, Isaiah Rodriguez, one of the passengers in the vehicle, is reflecting publicly about the crash that killed his two friends and had him fighting for his life.

"I didn't get to go to the funerals so I guess you can say that this my chance to make up for that," Rodriguez said.

In the audience listening was Rodriguez's father, Leonel.

"He's a little bit more understanding about life, about how fragile it can be, how it can change in a split second," he said.

Part of Rodriguez's reflection was to look to the future. "Dream as if you were to live forever but live as if you were to die today," Isaiah Rodriguez said.

Dallas police say they arrested a man Monday morning for attacking his own mother and stepfather.

Officers said the man, identified by police as 21-year-old Juan Medrano, choked his mother, then tried to push her down the stairs. He's also accused of attacking his stepfather.

The fight started just before 11 p.m. Sunday at Meadows North Condominiums on the 8000-block of Meadows Road, and sparked a SWAT standoff.

Police said the parents accused the son of stealing tools from the family business. The mom told police that her son got so mad that he wrapped both hands around her neck, strangled her until she couldn't breathe, then tried to shove her down the stairs.

Investigators said Medrano ran out of the complex and confronted his stepfather in the parking lot and is accused of ramming his car into his stepdad's car. Police said the men also got into a physical fight.

Police said Medrano then retreated to the apartment and barricaded himself inside. Officers learned he had access to a gun, so the SWAT team moved in. He managed to slip out before police surrounded the complex. Officers say they found Medrano, reportedly intoxicated, in a breezeway. Police said he resisted arrest and that a stun gun was used to put him in custody.

Police said the man is in jail facing four charges for strangulation and assault.

Few Clues in Sorority Rape Cases

Cheryl Smith is on a mission. She's a 35-year member of Delta Sigma Theta and a journalist, pursuing the man who's stalking her sorority sisters.

"I think about it a lot," said Smith. "I think about it everyday. I say 'please, let's catch this person'."

"I feel in my gut someone knows him and someone knows what he has done and we need to speak out."

Each week, in Smith's two weekly newspapers, an entire page is devoted to information about the suspect.  Police said he committed home invasion style rapes of Delta Sigma Theta members in Plano, Coppell and Shady Shores dating back to November of 2010 and as recent as October 2011.

Information about the man plays on a video loop in the lobby of Plano's Police Department.

"It is something everyone thinks about, our officers as well, 'cause they walk through that front door and they pass by there," said David Tilley with the Plano Police Department. "It's a daily reminder this is something that weighs heavily on us. We want to solve this."

The video was taken near a convenience store in Mesquite, within minutes of the man calling one of his victims.  The video's release has failed to produce a name. By now his appearance may have changed.

"He did make a mistake, we do have his DNA," said Tilley.  NBC 5 reported that information in February of 2012.

Which means police will know they have the right guy if they ever catch him. Cheryl Smith is determined to see it happen.

"I could be a target, he could say 'let me shut her up'," Smith said. "But I will go down fighting. I will go down on the right side of history.  Because I won't be silent letting any type of abuse happen."

Fireball Meteorite Falls on Calif. Home

Bright Light, Loud Boom May Have Been Meteor

The Bay Area was buzzing Wednesday night after a bright streak of something moved through the sky. It was accompanied by a loud boom.

More Photos and Videos

The first chunk of meteorite from the fireball that streaked across California skies last week was found this weekend, after it slammed into a woman's roof and landed on her lawn.

The find came after days of searching by scientists from the SETI Institute for potential remnants of the meteor's blaze, NBC Bay Area reported.

Lisa Webber said she remembered an odd noise she had heard Wednesday night — as of something, possibly an animal, on her roof — after she read an article about the meteor's trajectory Saturday.

The 61-year-old nurse contacted scientists at the SETI Institute after she found a rock in her yard in the North Bay city of Novato.

Those researchers, led by meteor expert and NASA Ames researcher Peter Jenniskens, inspected the dense 63-gram, two-inch rock — as well as the divot in her roof shingles where it hit — and confirmed their suspicions: It was a meteorite.

"I wasn't sure at first," Jenniskens said. "The meteorite looks very unusual, because much of the fusion crust had come off." Fusion crust is a thin, glassy coating formed on the surface of a meteorite by the intense heat generated by a meteor's speeds.

"The significance of this find is that we can now hope to use our fireball trajectory to trace this type of meteorite back to its origins in the asteroid belt," Jenniskens added.

Last week's meteor flash thrilled observers across the Bay Area with its streak of light and its loud boom Wednesday night.

"One of the coolest things I've ever seen, nothing at all like a shooting star," Jessica Collins told NBC Bay Area on Facebook.

"It was so low and close I thought it was someone setting off fireworks," Beppy Tobeler added, saying the meteor appeared to break up into pieces as she watched.

Jenniskens' team is still on the hunt for more meteorites from Wednesday's meteor and suspects larger pieces are out there, probably north-northeast of Novato toward Sonoma.

Raw Video: Firebomb Attack in Long Beach

In this YouTube video released by the Long Beach Police Department, a man is seen throwing a Molotov cocktail at a man outside a Long Beach market.

More Photos and Videos

Police are searching for the man whose brazen Molotov cocktail attack outside a busy southern California market set his victim on fire, leaving him gravely burned.

They released surveillance video Sunday of the horrifying attack in the hopes of tracking down the person responsible for tossing the firebomb Friday night, NBC 4 Southern California reported.

The victim, in his 50s, was hospitalized with burns from the waist down after a man, believed to be in his late 20s, launched the lighted bottle at him he sat outside the busy El Paisano Ranch Market in Long Beach, said Long Beach Police Sgt. Aaron Eaton.

Eaton said the victim was sitting outside the market, minding his own business and waiting for his father to get food, when the suspect came from an alley and attacked.

The surveillance video shows a ball of fire explode as the bottle hits the ground, barely missing a mother with a baby in a stroller. A man runs from the scene through the parking lot, where others can be seen trying to put out the flames.

The firebombing victim was taken to the hospital, where he was in serious condition, medically sedated, with serious burns to the lower part of his body, his hands and his face, police said. He was not being identified due to concerns about his safety.

Police said it didn't appear the victim and suspect knew each other, and the case is likely not gang-related.

Anyone with more information about the crime was urged to call police at (562) 570-7260.
