A driver is in police custody Tuesday morning, accused of causing a serious crash on Highway 75 near Spring Valley Road in Richardson that severed a man's arm.
Police said a speeding car raced up behind a Yellow Checker airport shuttle van and smashed into the back of it at about 2:20 a.m.
The crash caused the shuttle driver to lose control. The van flipped several times off the highway and onto the frontage road. The crash severed a passenger's arm at his elbow.
Paramedics recovered his limb and rushed him to Parkland Hospital hoping to save his arm.
Rescuers say that man's wife is banged up and is expected to recover. The shuttle company tells NBC 5 that its driver was released from the hospital hours after the crash.
The driver of the Honda, who police say caused the crash, was also taken to the hospital with a hand injury.
Lt. Coby Pewitt with the Richardson Police Department told NBC 5 that investigators suspect the driver had been drinking. His blood will be drawn at the hospital, then he's expected to be taken to jail.
Security Guard Carl Dungan had been working at nearby Autoflex and heard the screeching from the wreck.
"What was strange about it to me was the impact, or whatever it was. The noise, it seemed to go on for 10-15 seconds. Then, I saw the police cars and knew it was going to be pretty bad," said Dungan.
Dungan said speeding along that stretch of 75 is a terrible problem.
"I see them coming here in excess of 100 (miles per hour) constantly. Every night. You just sit there and kind of watch them and go, 'Wow!' It's pretty dangerous," said Dungan.
The names of those involved in the crash have not yet been revealed.
