Police arrested a driver in connection with a deadly crash at the Venice boardwalk, police said Sunday.

Nathan Louis Campbell, 38, was booked into the Los Angeles County Jail on a murder charge in connection with Saturday's crash, police and online jail records said.

The news comes as a woman killed in the crash was identified, Los Angeles County Coroner's officials said.

Alice Gruppioni, 32, of Italy, died in the crash that happened at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the 100 block of Dudley Avenue, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The crash also injured 11 others, including one critically.

Of the 12 people initially reported injured, Gruppioni died from her injuries, LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman said. Another victim was in critical condition, two were in serious condition and eight were being treated for less-serious injuries, police said.

After the crash, the suspect allegedly ran away after abandoning the car at Ocean Park Boulevard and Beverly Avenue, where it was located by authorities.

An LAPD K-9 bomb squad was called in to check the abandoned car for explosive devices in what Neiman termed an abundance of caution.

Police said the suspect turned himself in at the Santa Monica police station. He was later booked into an LAPD jail.

Witnesses said it appeared the car, described as a 2008 to 2010 black or dark blue Dodge Avenger, drove toward pedestrians as it swerved on and off the curb.

The Venice Boardwalk is known for its street performers and eclectic shops and restaurants, and is considered a major Southern California tourist attraction.
