Two firefighters were killed and two others were injured when they were met with gunfire while responding to a house fire in upstate New York, officials said. With firefighters unable to battle the blaze for hours, it destroyed three houses, officials said -- and continued to burn late Monday morning.
The firefighters were fired upon as soon as they got out of their vehicles, just before 6 a.m., officials said. They pulled back and let the fire burn, and a SWAT team responded to the scene, Webster Fire Marshal Rob Boutillier said.
The fire spread to two other houses and a motor vehicle. By 9:50 a.m., officials said there was no longer an 'active shooter', and firefighters were battling the blaze.
Two firefighters were being treated for gunshot wounds at a nearby hospital, offiicials said. One of them escaped the scene in his personal vehicle and drove to a hospital.
Police said they did not have a suspect in custody, but gave no other details on the status of the gunman.
Nearby homes were evacuated, and residents were being searched by New York State Police, according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.
"We looked out the window and we saw the SWAT team and everyone around," Michael Damico, a nearby resident who was evacuated, told the Democrat and Chronicle. "Some people on this bus already watched their houses burn. They're not happy."
