A group of residents fed up with the look of their South Garland neighborhood are taking its makeover into their own hands.

Tammy Riser started up a beautification project in Windsor Park Two with another resident.

"The area before wasn't very safe for the children in the neighborhood," she said.

"Safety was an issue," Riser said. "There's no sidewalks in the area with an elementary school across the way. ... The area was unsightly and being used to dump trash."

The group has been paving sidewalks, ripping down run down fences and planting trees and bushes, trying to give the area a better look.

"The Waterhouse Drive is a busy thoroughfare, and it's the entryway to two neighborhoods," said Felisa Conner, city neighborhood vitality manager. "This is the type of project that we want to see neighbors engage in."

The group started with about $4,000 in cash and donations and have put in thousands of volunteer hours. All of those factors gave them access to a city neighborhood vitality matching grant for $30,000.

The city has submitted the project for recognition with the national neighborhood organization Neighbors USA.

Volunteers meet the first Saturday of every month to continue fixing the area. They say the work is far from over and hope to start working on another area.

"My goal is just to make it beautiful and feel good about where I live," Riser said. " I want to get the money I put into my home, out of my home."

A group of high school students that was stranded in New York City because of Hurricane Sandy was back in North Texas on Friday.

The 13 Bishop Lynch High School students, two coaches and an adviser were in the city Oct. 25 for a national mock trial competition. They were supposed to return to Dallas on Monday night, but flood waters submerged LaGuardia Airport's taxiways and runways.

"We were very worried, but knew that they were in good hands," parent Joy Miller said.

The group stayed at a Times Square hotel that had electricity and Internet access.

The students were able to attend classes and stay in touch with parents via Skype.

"Once we realized that the storm had gone through, things were a lot better," said David Post, one of the coaches.

Now that they're back, the students are reflecting on the storm that left behind sheer devastation.

"Most of all, our thoughts and prayers go to those who actually did get hit very severely by the storm, " student Erin Brown said.

Cowboys Player in Financial Fight With Family

The attorney for a Dallas Cowboys player says he is missing money that they believe his family has spent.

Offensive tackle Tyron Smith, a second-year pro, is paid millions as first-round draft choice to watch Tony Romo's back. But his attorney said it seems that no one is watching Smith's.

John Schorsch, the 21-year-old's attorney, said his client's family has been blindsiding him financially. He said his client became aware in recent months that he was missing significant sums of money.

"I think we're talking several hundreds of thousands, if not in excess of a million dollars," Schorsch said.

Schorsch said a forensic audit of Smith's finances is under way to determine how much money is missing.

His parents set Smith up with financial advisers when he was drafted, Schorsch said.

"He would prefer to have no friction," he said. "He would prefer to have no conflict."

Schorsch said he believes serious damage has been done to the family's relationship.

"I think he's been carrying this for some time," he said. "The issue came to light several months ago."

On Tuesday, Smith called Dallas police to his home to report that family members had run a blitz on him -- harassing and tormenting him in the pursuit of financial gain.

Dallas Cowboy retirees, veterans and rookies such as Morris Claiborne say no NFL player is immune to the demands for cash once drafted.

"Man, it's just a lot of different things going," he said. "You got new family members, people calling for money -- even your family members."

Claiborne, this year's top Cowboys draft pick, said he actually has a person in his confidence whose job it is to tell people "no" when requests for cash come in.

"It hurts, but money changes people. ... You just got to keep it real with them," he said. "You're not going to have that money forever, so you got to do the right things with it."

Schorsch said all Smith wants is to conservatively manage his money so that if his career ends tomorrow because of injury, he would be able to take care of himself.

Schorsch also said that his client willingly gave money to his family but the support was returned with a sense of entitlement, as if Smith is his family's lottery ticket.

"There is no debt that's owed to a parent," he said. "It should be a joy and a gift to support your child and, conversely, for a child to help its parent, but there's no debt; there's no entitlement."

Smith's family denied to the Dallas Morning News that it used his finances to bankroll its lifestyle. In the newspaper story, they blamed the rift on his girlfriend.

NTTA Reaches Agreement With Top Toll Violator

advertisement

The North Texas Tollway Authority says it has reached an agreement with its top toll violator to pay her bill.

In July, the NTTA announced Amber Young was No. 1 on its list of the Top 100 toll violators with more than 8,500 toll transactions amounting to an outstanding balance of nearly $183,000.

According to the agreement, Young will pay $5,000 initially and $250 per month for an extended period of time, which will result in a total payment of $28,684.

The NTTA said her settlement includes every past due toll at the highest ZipCash rate and a significant portion of the delinquent fees accumulated over three years.

Under the agreement, Young must open a TollTag account and maintain a $500 balance on the Tag through the duration of her payment agreement.

If she defaults, she will owe the total outstanding amount ($182,598.15), and the NTTA can bar all of her vehicles from all NTTA roadways, the agency said.

The NTTA said Young's case proves that it's best to take care of toll invoices in a timely manner to avoid higher delinquent toll costs.

Campaign's Top Moments: From Perry's "Oops" to Sandy's Wrath

advertisement

After many months, countless attack ads and nearly $2 billion raised and spent, the presidential campaign is finally coming to a close. To help put the long slog of a race into perspective, we've dipped into the archives and come up with a list of some of the campaign's most pivotal, and memorable moments.

Rick Perry's debate brain freeze

There was a time, more than a year ago, when Texas Gov. Rick Perry was considered the front runner among a strong field of Republican primary candidates that included Rep. Michelle Bachmann of Minnesota, conservative talk radio host Herman Cain, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum. But Perry had a crushing weakness: muddy debate performances. His string of live-action flubs culminated on Nov. 9, 2011, when he tried to name the three federal agencies he'd eliminate if he became president.

"It's three agencies of government when I get there that are gone," Perry said. "Commerce, Education, and the…what's the third one there? Let's see." Nearly a minute passed, as some of the other candidates tried to help him out with suggestions. But it did no good. "The third agency of government I would do away with - the education, the uh, the commerce and let's see. I can't the third one. I can't. Sorry. Oops." Later, he remembered: the Department of Energy. But it was too late. Perry was dogged by speculation that he would drop out. He vowed to fight on, but by January he was gone.

Cain withdraws from race

Even the most outsider candidates seem to have their surges of popularity, and for a brief time Herman Cain had his. And then he fell just as quickly, as a series of women came forward with allegations that he had sexually harassed them while he ran the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s. Another woman claimed she had carried on a 13-year extramarital affair with him. Cain denied it all, but the charges overwhelmed his campaign, and on December 9, 2011, he dropped out, citing the "continued hurt on me and my family."

Santorum shocks Romney

Perhaps Tom Brokaw said it best when he summed up Rick Santorum's dogged candidacy by comparing the conservative former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania to a Hollywood action hero. "He's like a character in a Bruce Willis movie," Brokaw quipped during the head of the primary season. "He just knows how to stay alive."

Santorum's insurgency began with a surprising showing in the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3. The Iowa GOP originally announced Mitt Romney the winner by eight votes, but reversed itself less than two weeks later, when a closer count revealed that Santorum had won by 34 votes. The difference was more than just a few votes; it established Santorum as a force to be reckoned with, and he rode that momentum for months, picking up primary victories in February and March. Romney finally got the better of Santorum in April, reeling off three victories that resulted in Santorum withdrawing on April 4.

Biden forces Obama's hand on same-sex marriage

Vice President Joe Biden is known for his spontaneity, which can catch even his closest allies off guard. At no time was was that more evident than on May 6, when Biden went on NBC's "Meet the Press" and declared that he was "absolutely comfortable" with same-sex marriage. The statement caught President Barack Obama by surprise, and effectively forced his hand on the issue. Obama had once stated his opposition to same-sex marriage, but had more recently admitted that his stance was "evolving," and apparently intended to declare his support some time just before the Democratic National Convention in August. Instead, on May 9, Obama gave an interview the ABC News in which he endorsed same-sex marriage. "At a certain point, I've just concluded that, for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married." Biden reportedly apologized to Obama for upsetting the president's plans.

Romney clinches nomination

The race between President Obama and Mitt Romney officially began on May 29, when Romney clinched the Republican presidential nomination with a landslide victory in Texas. The achievement was largely symbolic, because he was already considered the front-runner, and most of his challengers, including Rick Santorum and Ron Paul, had dropped out. Romney, whose father, George, a Michigan governor, failed in his run for the Republican nomination in 1968, vindicated that loss and became the first Mormon to become a major-party nominee. "I am honored that Americans across the country have given their support to my candidacy," Romney announced. "And I am humbled to have won enough delegates."

Romney picks Paul Ryan

One of the biggest problems Romney faced as the GOP's nominee was ambivalence from the party's conservative wing. His solution was to pick Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate. Ryan, the 42-year-old chairman of the House Budget Committee, was the author of a budget proposal that called for steep tax reductions, aggressive spending cuts, and a reorganization of the way Medicare and Medicaid operate. In short, Ryan was the answer to conservatives' prayers: he was young, aggressive, well-spoken and, as a photo spread in Time illustrated, was in really good shape.

The choice highlighted the difference between the two campaigns on entitlements, taxes, the role of government in American life, and social issues, such as abortion. "There are a lot of people in the other party who might disagree with Paul Ryan," Romney said at a rally in which he introduced Ryan. "I don't know of anyone who doesn't respect his character and judgment." Ryan promised that he and Romney "won't duck the tough issues. We will lead."

Eastwood's empty chair

On paper, Romney was the headliner of the Republican National Convention. But he was nearly outshone by an unlikely political speech-maker: Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood, who was introduced as a surprise guest just before Romney was scheduled to take the stage in Tampa on Aug. 30 and formally accept the GOP nomination. Working without a script or teleprompter, Eastwood, 82, delivered a long, rambling monologue that mocked Obama and Biden. He arranged for an empty chair to be brought on stage with him, and conducted an imaginary conversation with the president. The crowd of delegates roared, but the speech delayed Romney's by 10 minutes and dominated discussion of the night's events.

The Big Dog returns

Obama, too, was upstaged at his party's convention. But unlike Romney's choice of Eastwood, Obama pretty much knew what he was getting when he asked Clinton to formally nominate him at the Democratic National Convention's second night in Charlotte on Sept. 5. The president and Clinton had never been close – their rivalry dated back to Hilary Clinton's primary battle against Obama in 2008 – but they agreed to bury the hatchet in order to keep the White House in Democratic hands. Clinton, out of office for 12 years, clearly relished the opportunity to invoke the fiscal prosperity of the late 1990s that marked his second term as president, delivering a sparkling speech that argued that Obama deserved another four years to fix the economy. Clinton continued stumping for Obama through Election Day.

Romney's "47 percent" remarks

America got a rare glimpse of an unexpurgated Mitt Romney in September, when Mother Jones released a secretly recorded video of the former governor speaking to wealthy donors in Florida. Taken by a small camera or cell phone resting on a table, the video captured Romney saying how he wasn't trying to appeal to the "47 percent of the people" who will vote for Mr. Obama "no matter what." These voters, he said, were "dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them." The video threatened to upend his campaign, and Romney, who had battled a prevailing image of him as out of touch with middle-class voters, immediately sought to contain the damage. He admitted the remarks were "not elegantly stated" and insisted, "this is a campaign about the 100 percent." But the quote dogged him for the rest of the race.

Romney dominates first debate

It was the wrong time for the president to take a nap. Just when Obama seemed to be pulling away in the polls, Romney routed him in the first presidential debate on Oct. 3. The Republican aggressively questioned the president's ability to rescue the economy, but Obama often seemed uninterested in fighting back. Split-screen views of the debate showed Romney castigating Obama while Obama looked down as his lectern, grimly taking notes.

As front runner, Obama appeared to have adopted a strategy of caution, which rapidly backfired. Romney immediately gained ground in the polls, and pulled within striking distance of the president. Later, after he'd had a chance to review a tape of the debate, Obama admitted that he'd screwed up. In an appearance at a charity event with Romney, Obama joked about "the nice, long nap I had in the first debate."

An unlikely hero to emerge from the first debate was Big Bird, after Romney put the character's employer, PBS, on his hit list of government subsidies he'd cut. Immediately, supporters of Big Bird took to social media to defend the yellow-feathered victim. That weekend, Big Bird showed up on Saturday Night Live to defend himself.

Obama went on to rally in the second presidential debate, attacking Romney as a wealthy, far-right candidate who was masking himself as a moderate. At one point, the two men got in each other's faces, appearing as if they might come into contact.

Their third and final debate, limited to foreign policy issues, was more subdued, and this time it was Romney who took a more cautious approach, while the president used sarcasm to mock Romney's lack of experience in international affairs.

Sandy forces a pause in the race

Hurricane Sandy pummeled the Northeast a week before Election Day, forcing the candidates to briefly suspend their campaigns. As the devastation deepened, both men held off returning to the trail until after the worst was over. Whether the storm affects the race's result is a matter of debate, as questions remain about how millions of people still without power or access to transportation will get to the polls.

American Airlines and its pilots union were both hoping to reach a deal by the end of week, but they still don't have one.

In a message sent out Friday night, the Allied Pilots Association said the union's negotiating committee met with management every day this week and for 26 of the past 28 days.

The APA said "progress continues" and that "the pace of negotiations has not slowed."

The statement said the negotiating committee is "burning the midnight oil," saying that the "important final issues take a bit longer to conclude."

Still, it's a good sign that the two sides could reach a deal soon.

Despite Legal Issues, Prayers Before Football Games

advertisement

In Texas, where high school football may almost be a religion, one school district has found a way to say organized prayers before games -- despite a Supreme Court ruling that generally forbids the practice.

This year in the Birdville Independent School District near Fort Worth, students lead the crowd in prayer before games.

On Friday night, before Richland High School took on Northwest High School, a student called for a moment of silence for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The district defends the policy and says it's legal under a Texas law passed in 2007 that allows a "limited public forum" for public school students.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that student-led prayers at public high school football games violate the separation of church and state.

Birdville ISD spokesman Mark Thomas said the speakers are chosen at random. The only restriction is the students must be juniors or seniors with no disciplinary record.

"They tell us they want to do it and we draw names out of the hat and say, 'This is your event' and they go on," Thomas said.

On the scoreboard, the district flashes a legal disclaimer.

"The student giving the introduction for tonight's athletic contest is a volunteering student selected on neutral criteria," it says.

It also adds that the student's comments don't represent the views of the district.

Thomas said the district allows students to say whatever they want. Sometimes it's a prayer, and other times students just welcome fans to the game, he said.

"We don't know until the student gets up there and we turn the mic on," he said. "We don't dictate; we don't ask."

Civil rights experts question the policy and wonder what would happen if a student wanted to promote the Koran or even Satanism.

Frank Colosi, a civil rights attorney in Fort Worth, said the policy invites a lawsuit.

Thomas said nobody has complained and that the district has reviewed its policies with attorneys.

New Details Emerge in Baeza Murder Case

Rockwall police say the man who confessed to killing 15-year-old Surie Baeza has a broken wrist presumably sustained in the attack.

Mother's Former Boyfriend Arrested in Teen's Death

Rockwall police say the estranged boyfriend of the victim's mother has confessed to the stabbing death of a 15-year-old high school student.

More Photos and Videos

Friends and family remembered a slain 15-year-old at a candlelight vigil on Friday night.

Surie Baeza was stabbed to death in her home on Tuesday. Her mother's estranged boyfriend, Juan Enrique Torres, has been arrested in connection with her slaying.

Loved ones gathered a few streets away from Baeza's home to remember the sweet, charismatic 15-year-old.

"She was always cracking jokes, really sweet to everybody, but tough when she needed to be," Rockwall Health High School sophomore Kristen Foster said.

It's a tragedy so horrific that it's nearly impossible for some of Baeza's friends to understand.

"My daughter is the same age," Tamara Shroyer said. "They are best friends. We went to her house yesterday, and my daughter was just waiting for her to come out and she just kept saying, 'She's not coming out. She's not coming out.' It broke my heart."

Baeza's mother, Irma Baeza, did not speak at the vigil, but her face spoke volumes about what she and her children are going through.

"I can promise you, the district attorney's office will do everything in our power to make sure Surie Baeza gets the justice she deserves," Rockwall County District Attorney Kenda Culpepper said.

Until then, friends and family are clinging to one another and their memories of Surie Baeza.

"I remember spending the first Christmas here in Dallas with Surie and her family," cousin Nadeli Honeycutt said. "I remember when Surie saw snow for the first time; the glow in her eyes was incredible."

Honeycutt spoke on behalf of the Baeza family.

"Rest in peace, my sweet and loving cuz," she said. "In heaven, you will have your dance. Everlasting and eternal happiness are now yours."

Torres is in the Rockwall County Jail charged with homicide. His bond is set at $1 million.

NYC Marathon Runner Dedicates Race to Charities

A teacher at Garland's Kimberlin Academy for Excellence who is running the New York City Marathon is dedicating each mile to a different charity.

A Garland teacher who was going to run the New York City Marathon for charity found out the event was canceled after she arrived in the Big Apple.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced late Friday afternoon that the race would not be held.

"I made it down to New York, and I picked up my packet at the expo with thousands of other runners," Marcie Adame said in a video message to NBC 5. "Of course, like the rest of the world, you found out at the same time we did."

Bloomberg announced the cancellation just a few hours after he had defended his earlier decision to hold the marathon, despite heavy criticism as New York City struggles to recover from Hurricane Sandy, NBC News reported.

"While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, it is clear that it has become the source of controversy and division," he said in a statement.

The cancellation has not dampened Adame's spirits.

"We're here with runners from all over the world," she said. "And like most runners, we're used to training for races and getting all the way up to the start line and the race, for whatever reason, is needing to be canceled for the safety of the participants, the spectators."

Adame added that some runners were talking of doing a ceremonial run across the city.

"We look forward to New York welcoming us back in 2013," she said.

The New York City marathon is the world largest, with tens of thousands of participants. In a typical year, New Yorkers line the route's 26 miles, turning the city into a giant party.

The race winds through all five boroughs, but it starts in hard-hit Staten Island, parts of which look like a disaster zone.

NBC News' Andrew Mach and Elizabeth Chuck contributed to this report.

Criswell College Sues Over Health Care Law

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 02 November 2012 | 22.29

A Dallas religious college has joined a growing number of conservative and religion-based employers suing the federal government over the provisions in the Affordable Care Act.

Criswell College is seeking an exemption to the requirement that it to share costs for Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptive methods as part of its health care coverage.

"It would be like asking an atheist, requiring an atheist, to buy a Bible or a vegetarian to buy a hamburger," said Jerry Johnson, university president. "We feel like our religious liberty is being violated, and we're seeking relief."

Johnson said Criswell College is in the process of renegotiating its health care coverage. When looking at its budget requirements for the 2013-2014 fiscal year, suing now made sense, he said.

Johnson said the school's lawsuit does not challenge payments for traditional contraception methods such as birth control pills, only "abortion-inducing drugs and procedures" currently not covered in the college's health care plan.

"There's a day-after pill. There's a week-after pill. There's a full range of things in this mandate," he said.

Johnson said Criswell College would continue to provide coverage for traditional birth control pills when its new health care plan is negotiated.

"We have always had that," he said. "That will be included, but not abortion-inducing drugs."

Criswell College is represented by the Liberty Institute, which has filed many lawsuits on behalf of conservative and religious organizations.

Hiram Sasser, director of litigation, said Criswell's suit is only seeking for the mandate about abortion inducing drugs and procedures to be declared unconstitutional or that Criswell College be declared exempt from enforcement.

"The law requires, if they're going to provide exemptions for secular companies -- which they have provided lots of exemptions in the overall scheme -- then they have to provide those same exemptions for Criswell College," Sasser said.

Sasser said the timing of the lawsuit, which was filed Thursday afternoon, just days before the election, is not politically motivated.

A Garland elementary school teacher is heading to New York to run in Sunday's marathon and help raise money for charities.

"I want to really support New York," said Marcie Adame, a long-distance runner and physical education teacher at Garland's Kimberlin Academy for Excellence.

Adame has never been to New York but planned to go this year -- even before the disaster from Hurricane Sandy.

"I thought, 'I don't want to just run for myself,'" she said. "That would be selfish. And so I decided I am going to dedicate each mile to a different charity."

She said she has heard criticism that the race will sap emergency resources at a time when they are needed with relief efforts, but she said she believes holding the marathon sends an important message.

"I am glad the race is going on because it brings together people from  all over the world," she said. "The true positive is that New York is showing that they can weather anything."

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said manpower won't be an issue.

"The marathon is not going to redirect any focus," he said. "By Sunday, we will have electricity back downtown. That will free up an enormous number of police. Also, a lot of the transportation needs that we have during the week aren't there on the weekends."

Adame, whose birthday is on Sept. 11, said she has an emotional connection to New York.

"This is a city that has true grit," she said. "And I think in Texas we have a lot in common with them."

Attacks Spark Formation of Neighborhood Watch

Deputies Release Sketch of Johnson Co. Attacker

A woman in her front yard and a female jogger were sexually assaulted just east of Burleson around country roads 604 and 605. The Johnson County's Sheriff's Office has released a sketch of the attacker.

More Photos and Videos

Burleson police are trying to determine if a man who approached a teenager in her driveway on Wednesday is connected to two sexual assaults in rural Johnson County.

The two attacks around country roads 604 and 605, just east of Burleson, on Sept. 27 and July 8.

On Wednesday morning, a man approached a 17-year-old who was in her garage in the 2600 block of Pinnacle Drive in Burleson. Police said the man asked her if her parents were home and told her very sexually explicit things.

The girl's dog began barking, scaring the man away.

Burleson police said the man matches to some extent the description of the attacker in the sexual assaults.

Investigators are interviewing the girl about the incident.

"We want them to interview that individual and see if this could potentially be the same suspect now that's moved out of the county into our area or it's somebody different," Cmdr. Chris Havens said. "We just don't know at this time."

Police are asking Burleson residents to be on alert, be aware of their surroundings and vary their routines.

Anyone with information on the cases is asked to call police.

NBC 5's Amanda Guerra contributed to this report.

Window of Time Narrows in Teen's Murder

Detectives now say they believe Surie Baeza was killed between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., a much more narrow window of time than initially believed.

Rockwall Teen Fatally Stabbed in Her Home

Rockwall police are investigating the death of a 15-year-old high school freshman who stabbed to death in her home Tuesday.

More Photos and Videos

Police say the stabbing death of a 15-year-old Rockwall high school student has been solved after her mother's estranged boyfriend confessed Thursday to the killing.

Rockwall police said Juan Enrique Torres, 41, of Belize, told detectives that he argued with Baeza on Tuesday morning and killed her in a fit of rage when she threatened to call police.

"It was something to do with taking her to a pawn shop to get something repaired or drop something off, but he refused to take her, and an argument developed and went from there," Sgt. Jeff Welch said.

Detectives said Torres called them at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday and said he wanted to talk. When he met with detectives, he told them that he had killed the girl and provided a written confession.

"I can only hope Surie's mom can sleep a little better tonight knowing justice will be served for Surie," Welch said.

Police said Torres told them he left the knife used in the slaying inside the girl's home. Investigators later returned to the home and recovered what they believe is the knife used to kill Baeza. Police said they won't know if it is the murder weapon until it can be tested by forensic investigators.

Rockwall police said Torres was in a relationship with Baeza's mother for eight years. Until recently, he lived at the home and had access to the residence, they said.

Torres and Baeza's mother have a 7-year-old child, police said.

Torres has been placed under arrest and is being held in the Rockwall County Jail. Police said he was formally charged Thursday night and is being held on $1 million bond.

Torres served 15 months probation for a 2008 domestic violence charge in Dallas County. The victim in that case is not yet known, but Torres and Baeza's mother were dating at that time, police said.

Community Struggles With Slaying

More than 200 friends and neighbors of a slain Rockwall teenager packed into the Lakepoint Park Community Center on Thursday to start the healing process.

The crowd of parents and teenagers, along with pastors and counselors talked about the killing of 15-year-old Surie Baeza. A pastor even announced to some in the crowd that Juan Torres, the former boyfriend of the teenager's mother, had confessed to the slaying.

During the more than hourlong gathering, parents asked about how to talk to their children, who might be feeling sad or upset. Other parents asked how they can communicate better as a community to prevent other crimes.

Kris Wade came with his 13-year-old daughter. The family knew Baeza from band and said he wants his daughter to talk about her emotions to start the healing process.

"As a parent, it's a tough conversation to handle, to approach it on a level that they might understand it," Wade said, adding that school officials were also helping out.

Parents said it was hard to learn that something like the slaying could happen in their small community.

"Rockwall is not used to this," Wade said. "Rockwall is a very tight community. It's obviously a great place to live. We all come together as a community and support each other, and that's the only way as a community you get through this."

The community will gather at Lakepoint Park Community Center on Friday at 7 p.m. for a vigil.

Mother Found Girl's Body

Baeza's mother found her daughter's body on the floor of her bedroom at about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday and called 911.

She told police her daughter had stayed home from school that day because she had felt ill and that, though she'd arrived home at about 4 p.m., she hadn't seen her daughter since that morning.

On Thursday, the medical examiner said the girl died of several stab wounds and that she also suffered defensive wounds, meaning she fought against her attacker. The medical examiner said complete autopsy results would not be available for some time.

Detectives also said on Thursday morning that they initially had a 12-hour window for when the murder could have taken place, but that the window of opportunity was reduced to two hours after they received a report that someone saw her alive at about 2 p.m. Tuesday, just two hours before her mother returned home from work.

Baeza was a freshman at Rockwall Heath High School.

NBC 5's Mark Schnyder, Ellen Goldberg and Ben Russell contributed to this report.

An early morning fire at a Dallas nursing home woke up residents Friday.

The fire started at about 4:30 a.m. at the Treemont Nursing and Rehab Center at 5500 Harvest Hill Road and Montfort Drive.

The fire investigator said a cigarette in the designated smoking area, just outside the kitchen, likely started the fire in a chair and spread to the building. He has ruled the fire an accident.

The fire investigator told police he was patrolling the parking lot, looking for stolen cars, when he spotted the fire and tried to put it out quickly.

There is a fire station down the street from the nursing home. Crews arrived and helped minimize the damage to the outside of the building.

The air conditioning unit sucked up the smoke and mad it hard for some residents to breathe in the nearby independent living building.

There are about 100 residents in the nursing and all are OK. Many were woken up early by the sounding alarms.

A few residents decided to evacuate on their own to the main building.

An ambulance is on stand-by with oxygen, just in case anyone needs it.

Change Your Clocks This Sunday

advertisement

On Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, right at the 2 a.m. hour, your clocks need to "fall back" one hour. But why, in a world of electric lights and global business, do we still follow the daylight saving time (DST) practice?

As far back as the Roman times, societies have adjusted their clocks based on the amount of daylight during the day. Since the Earth spins on an axis as well as revolves around the sun, different parts of the planet get different amounts of sunlight throughout the year. Certain cities close to the poles, for instance, can have up to a month of darkness due to this effect.

For most locations, however, the difference is more subtle. You may notice the sun rising later in the day, as it gets closer to winter. Due to this effect, it would seem that the daylight comes at a later hour in the day (i.e. rising at 7:30 a.m. instead of 6:30 a.m.) and lasts longer in the day, (i.e. setting at 7:30 p.m. instead of 6:30 p.m.). Adjusting the clocks to match, by either adding or subtracting an hour twice per year, helps make the time in hours consistent with daylight during the day.

The history of organized DST dates back to 1905 when English builder William Willet observed many Londoners sleeping through a beautiful summer morning. He campaigned to get the practice into effect until his death in 1915, yet it wasn't until 1916 that German forces actually used the practice. The US starting their DST practices in 1918, even though it was heavily debated.

The controversy over DST continues even today. Many farmers and evening entertainment interests, like drive-in movies, have historically opposed the practice, while other industries, especially tourism and sports have been especially supportive due to increased profits. In fact, some reports believe businesses like golf courses add nearly $100 million dollars due to DST.

Besides the economic effects on businesses, DST has also been pushed as having an effect on reducing energy costs. During his time in France, Benjamin Franklin wrote an anonymous letter suggesting Parisians rise early to make use of the earlier sunlight, thereby saving candles. Though most modern societies have moved on from candle light, the idea is similar: by having people wake up earlier during daylight hours (by adjusting their clocks), they'll also use less electricity because the end of their work day will be closer to the time of darkness.

The energy argument for DST was so respected that the latest change to the practice was direct attempt to try to reduce energy usage. In the Energy Policy Act of 2005, this year's DST was adjusted to run from March to November. With this new range, clocks were set one hour ahead in March, and will be set back one hour this Sunday, November 4. Both changes are set for 2 a.m. local time.

Police have canceled an Amber Alert for a 4-year-old Tyler boy who was missing after his mother was shot to death.

James Calvert, 41, father of 4-year-old Lucas Calvert has been arrested in Louisiana.

Police in Monroe, La., tried to pull over a car matching the description of Calvert's Buick. Calvert led authorities on a short chase that ended in a crash. Officers found the boy unharmed in the backseat and his father behind the wheel, along with two guns inside the vehicle.

Calvert was booked into a jail in West Monroe, La., and will be transported to Tyler on a $2 million bond, according to police.

According to KETK-TV in Tyler, the boy was reported missing after the boy's mother, Jelena Calvert, was found fatally shot in the 3300-block of Bain Place.

Police issued a capital murder arrest warrant for James Calvert on Wednesday night.

KETK reported that the couple were in an ongoing custody battle.

The couple's other child, a 5-year-old who attends Woods Elementary School, is under police protection, KETK reported.

Calvert's charges in Texas are for capital murder and kidnapping. He now faces charges in Louisiana for evading arrest.

Dallas DA to Pursue Charge Against Bryant

The Dallas County District Attorney's Office said it will pursue a misdemeanor domestic violence charge against Dez Bryant after an incident in mid-July at his mother's DeSoto home.

The Dallas County District Attorney's Office said on Wednesday that it will pursue a misdemeanor family violence charge against Cowboys star wide receiver Dez Bryant.

District Attorney Craig Watkins said Wednesday afternoon that his office has accepted the charge against Bryant and that a court date will be set.

However, Watkins said his office could still decide to handle the charge differently in the future. In other words, the DA's office could still drop the charge or reach a plea deal, just as prosecutors could in any criminal case.

"We had to do our due diligence and investigate," Watkins said. "We did that, and we determined that this a charge we need to pursue. That's not to say that down the line we may make a different determination, but at this point we are pursuing the charges against Dez Bryant."

Bryant was arrested in July on suspicion of misdemeanor family violence against his mother, Angela Bryant. He was arrested on July 16, two days after an incident at his mother's DeSoto home.

According to DeSoto police, Angela Bryant's shirt and bra were ripped and her son slapped her in the face with a baseball hat.

At a press conference 10 days after the incident, Dez and Angela Bryant sat next to each other. Their attorney, Royce West, said that a disagreement happened, but that Dez Bryant did not commit family violence against his mother.

Angela Bryant signed an affidavit saying that she did not wish to pursue charges against her son.

In late July, the district attorney's office said it would review and investigate the case and decide whether to pursue the charge.

Watkins said it is not unusual for victims to sign affidavits not wishing to pursue charges when a family member is involved. However, it is up to his office to determine what is best for the public, he said.

"We have a responsibility to the public," Watkins said. "In this case, we will do what's necessary to protect the public."

NBC 5's calls for comment and reaction from Bryant's attorney, Royce West, were not returned on Wednesday.

So far, there is no court listing for Dez Bryant, according to the Dallas County's online court docket.

Spanier to be Charged in Sandusky Case

advertisement

Former Penn State University President Graham Spanier will be charged in the Sandusky child sex abuse case and the formal announcement will come later today from Pennsylvania State Attorney General Linda Kelly, NBC News reported.

Spanier is being charged with perjury and obstruction of justice, NBC reporter Michael Isikoff reported on "Today." Kelly and Pennsylvania State Police commissioner Frank Noonan have scheduled a news conference for 12 p.m. ET to annouce what Isikoff's sources described as a major development in the case.

In addition to the charges against Spanier, who served as Penn State's president for 16 years until he was fired last November, prosecutors are expected to file new charges against former administrators Vice President Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Curley, who have already been indicted.

The charges against all three are based, in part, on evidence uncovered in an investigation former FBI director Louis Freeh, NBC News reported. Evidence detailed in Freeh's report, released in July, included emails in which the former officials appeared to agree not to report to child welfare authorities a 2001 allegation by former graduate assistant Mike McQuearey that he saw Sandusky sexually abusing a young boy in the Penn State shower room.

The Freeh Report was very critical of Spanier, Curly, Schultz and legendary head coach Joe Paterno, saying they chose to protect the school's image rather than deal head-on with the Sandusky sex scandal.

Spanier disputed those findings

"The report is full of factual errors and jumps to conclusions sthat are untrue and unwarranted," he said in July.

Spanier, Curley and Schultz have always denied any wrongdoing. Spanier has said he was only told that Sandusky was "horsing around" with the young boy in the locker room.

In July, Spanier wrote a letter to the board of trustees saying he would not have turned a "blind eye" to reports that Sanduky was abusing children because he too was a victim of abuse who as a child endured repeated beatings by his father.

"It is unfathomable and illogical to think that a respected family sociologist and family therapist, someone who personally experienced massive and persistent abuse as a child, someone who devoted a significant portion of his career to the welfare of children and youth ... would have knowingly turned a blind eye to any report of child abuse or predatory sexual acts directed at children," Spanier said in the letter.

Jerry Sandusky was convicted in June on 45 counts of child sex abuse, for assaulting ten boys over a 15-year period of time. Some of the abuse occurred on school property. For years Sandusky was the defensive coordinator for Penn State's football team. His office was just a few feet away from Paterno's. The sex scandal was the undoing of Paterno, who was fired and then died a few months later of cancer. Curly and Schultz are facing trial early next year.

Sandusky was sentenced in September to at least 30 years in prison and no more than 60. That is expected to be a life sentence for the 69-year-old. He was moved to his permanent prison cell this week.

Single-serve coffeemakers that use coffee pods are gaining in popularity, and everyone wants a piece of the market, including Starbucks. Consumer Reports just tested the Starbucks Verismo machine and 21 others, costing from $25 to $300.

Testers found the fastest will rush you your caffeine in about a minute. But the Hamilton Beach Personal Cup 4997 took 3 minutes to deliver that first cup.

As for the Starbucks Verismo machine, you can make Starbucks' espresso, café latte, and brewed coffee, but it's pricey. It starts at $200, and it's pretty basic. For example, you can't adjust brew strength, and the manual says you should flush the machine with water after each brew.

The NBC 5 Investigates Consumer Unit reached out to Starbucks. The coffee company stands by the Verismo saying it is the only high-pressure, premium single-cup machine that produces Starbucks quality expresso beverages and coffees that consumers can make at home.

Far better for less, says Consumer Reports, is a $150 DeLonghi Nescafé Dolce Gusto Circolo. It brews a cup in a minute and makes cappuccinos, espressos, and other drinks as well. If you want a smaller pod coffeemaker that takes up less counter space, Consumer Reports recommends the Piccolo in the DeLonghi Nescafé Dolce Gusto line that goes for $100.

But be aware—buying a pod machine is just the beginning. The coffee pods can be expensive, up to $1 a cup.

Complete ratings and recommendations on all kinds of products, including appliances, cars & trucks, and electronic gear, are available on Consumer Reports' website.

The driver of a big-rig was killed early Thursday after being ejected from the cab of his truck and hit by a passing pickup.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the driver of a big-rig was driving southbound on U.S. 287 south of Rhome when he struck the trailer of another semi that was facing east at the intersection of 287 and Ramhorn Hill Road.

The driver of the southbound rig lost control of the vehicle and was ejected from the cab.  His rig continued on however, crossing the median and into the northbound lanes of 287 before finally crashing and catching fire on the far side of the highway.

The driver of the truck, whose name has not yet been released, was killed after being struck first by a pickup truck and then a number of other vehicles.  He died at the scene.

The driver of the pickup also lost control of his vehicle, and he also crossed into the northbound lanes of 287 and rolled before coming to a stop about 20 feet from the flaming big rig.  The driver of the pickup truck was transported to an area hospital where his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The driver of the east-facing big-rig was not injured.

Traffic Update:

The collision has closed most of U.S. 287 at Tarrant County/Wise County line while officials clear the scene and while HAZMAT crews clean a fuel spill.    One lane of 287 north is open, all southbound lanes are closed.

Commuters were initially advised to take state Highway 114 east to Interstate 35W to bypass the crash, but 114 has also become congested.  Drivers heading into Tarrant County from U.S. 287 or 114 north or west of Rhome are now encouraged to exit either Old Base Road or Farm-to-Market Road 3433.  Both roads will lead to Farm-to-Market Road 718 which will lead to 287 south of the crash.

There has been no estimate given as to when the roadway is expected to reopen.

Dallas police are searching for the shooter who killed one man and wounded three others, just hours after a neighborhood Halloween party.

Investigators said Robert McGowans, 57, was gunned down at the Aspen Chase Apartments on the 11000-block of Ferguson Road at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

McGowans died in the breezeway of his apartment, running for his life.  The deadly shooting inside of his apartment sent three others to the hospital.

"It's nonsense, it doesn't need to be in my community.  This is where I live," said neighbor Jeff Cassidy.

Cassidy is struggling to make sense of the violence that unfolded in his apartment complex.  Cassidy had just been hanging out with McGowans at the Aspen Chase Halloween Party Wednesday night.  He never imagined less than four hours later, McGowans would be shot and killed inside of the apartment he shares with his girlfriend.

"Robert was the type of person who would have given you his shirt or coat.  Robert would help you," said Cassidy.

Police said McGowans, a woman, and 2 other men had been in the apartment, knew the shooter, and allowed him to come inside.  Gunfire erupted and all four were shot.

McGowans only made it a few steps outside where he collapsed and died.  An ambulance rushed the three other victims to area hospitals.

"I could have been walking home from trick-or-treating with a daughter or friend.  It could have been me.  Very sad," said Cassidy.  "It's scary the world is coming to this, over something probably very stupid."

Cassidy just wants to see the killer caught.  "Someone around here knows who did it.  The police need to find who did it."

One of the victims claims it was a drug deal that turned deadly.  Police are still investigating.

Championship Gaming Returns to Dallas

advertisement

By now, everyone you know is some kind of gamer. Whether it's on your iPhone, xBox 360, Facebook, or even on your TV, there's something out there for all interests and skill levels.

But when you're the best of the best at games like Halo, StarCraft, or Tekken, then you need to head to Major League Gaming.

It's the largest "competitive video game league" and will bring it's fall championship back to Dallas this Nov. 2-4 for a three-day tournament offering up more than $150,000 in prizes.

Yes, people do get paid for playing video games. But it's not as easy as you might think.

Competitive gaming is a growing sport -- they call it an eSport -- with live commentary including play by play style analysis, team-based cooperative matches, and live audiences. They even stream the content online to hundreds of thousands of people around the world. In South Korea, for instance, StarCraft matches can be seen on television channels.

The Dallas stop marks the end of the 2012 Pro Circuit Season for MLG, and it's sure to not disappoint.

Halo fans should already start drooling as Halo 4, a game that's not even out yet, is making a pre-release tournament stop in Dallas. Teams of four will have an exclusive opportunity to play the game before it's release for a chance at $40,000 in prizes.

PlayStation 3 fans will be excited about the other pre-release tournament -- a free-to-enter competition on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Rounding out the tournament play will be StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, League of Legends, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 -- which is also making it's Pro Circuit debut in Dallas.

Folks who want to watch the gaming in person can buy an on-site ticket for $35 that covers the whole three-day tournament at the Dallas Convention Center.

We've been to a MLG event before, and it's a lot of fun to try out new games on the floor, watch the matches, and hang out with fellow gamers. But, we admit we're total nerds.

If you're interested in the competition, but can't make it out, online viewing of the Dallas event will be available on the official website starting at 5 p.m. on Nov. 2. It's free to watch in standard definition, but you'll have to pony up for HD streams.

Dallas County Passes Domestic Partner Benefits

Dallas County Commissioners agreed Tuesday to pay for health care for domestic partners of county workers.

The proposal passed on a 3-2 vote.

In the proposal, a domestic partner would be defined as someone of the same or opposite sex with whom the employee lives and shares a relationship with, according to papers prepared for the commission's approval.

In order to attain domestic partner status, an employee would have to prove that they have lived with their partner for at least six months and share financial and household responsibilities with them.

They will need to provide a lease or mortgage documentation with both names listed, or proof of a joint bank or credit account, or a utility bill that lists the names of both partners on it.

The health insurance benefits would not be directly awarded, according to county documents. The county employee would be paid a subsidy that they would have to use to purchase a private insurance policy.  In order to continue the subsidy, the employee would have to provide quarterly proof that a policy has in fact been purchased.

The extra coverage is expected to cost the county less than $100,000.

Church Reopens After Pastor's Slaying

advertisement

A Forest Hill family and congregation is mourning a popular North Texas pastor who was killed inside the church he founded.

Police said Danny Kirk 54, was beaten to death with an electric guitar at Greater Sweethome Missionary Baptist Church.

The suspect, identified by the Tarrant County medical examiner as Derrick Birdow, died after police used a stun gun to restrain him.

The medical examiner has not yet listed a cause of death for Birdow.

The Greater Sweethome Missionary Baptist Church reopened Tuesday morning.

Family and church members said they're trying to carry on the slain pastor's legacy.

"We still have a lot of work to do at the church to make sure the church goes on," said Melvin McClendson, Kirk's father-in-law. "I know that's what my son would want -- he would want the church to go on."

McClendson said there is a huge hole in his heart, the church that Kirk founded and his family. He said his wife is still in shock.

"She woke up this morning, and it all hit her all over again," McClendson said. "She's pretty much devastated. We all are."

Investigators said Birdow rammed his car into the front door of the church, starting a violent rampage.

Police say the 33-year-old man beat a church maintenance worker and broke his jaw. The man then allegedly chased Kirk into the music room, grabbed an electric guitar as a weapon and beat Kirk to death.

Officers said they had to use a stun gun to disable Birdow.

When officers went to check on him in the back of a squad car about 10 minutes later, he wasn't breathing. He was declared dead at the hospital.

Church leaders said they are working to find forgiveness.

"We have to forgive that man and pray for his family, because we can't hold that in our hearts," said James Spann, associate minister.

Bible study will go on as planned at the church Tuesday night.

Birdow's criminal history includes possession of a controlled substance in 1999, domestic assault in 2000, driving while intoxicated in 2004 and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, also in 2004.

"He was a loving person, you know," said Michelle Jennings, his aunt. "We just couldn't imagine him doing anything like this. It was like he was possessed."

His family said Fort Worth police took Birdow to John Peter Smith Hospital last week after he was acting "spacey."

Birdow's aunt said his wife and three children attended Greater Sweethome Missionary Baptist Church, but his family said the couple was separated.

Owner Says Neighbors Reported Dogs Over Her Religion

A battle over two pit bulls seized by the city as dangerous animals has erupted into a heated neighborhood squabble in North Fort Worth.

"They're adorable. They're sweet-natured," said the dogs' owner, Rana Soluri.

She blames vindictive neighbors for reporting her dogs, Lilo and Stitch, to animal control officers.

"They're innocent. They didn't do anything," she said. "They're used as pawns. It's simple. And it hurts."

But her neighbors on both sides of her home say the dogs are aggressive and have gotten out several times.

"I do know they have shown aggressive tendencies that I have seen before," said neighbor Jason Walraven.

The disagreement is complicated by Soluri's claim that her neighbors are targeting her because of her religion.

Soluri, who was born in Jordan, is Muslim.

"It's obvious," she said. "It's been going on for six years. They've made it very clear they don't like the likes of me around here. They've made it very clear about my race and about my religion."

Her neighbors adamantly deny the claim.

"That's not right," Walraven said. "None of us here have a problem with her religion."

Soluri has appealed a judge's ruling that her dogs are vicious, and she has gathered thousands of signatures on a website to try to stop the city from euthanizing the dogs.

"I want my time in court in front of a jury," she said. "I want a fair trial. This is the United States."

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price tweeted a statement Tuesday saying: "When issues such as these enter the court system, we must always carry out the orders of the court when a dog is declared 'dangerous.'"

Soluri and her neighbors both say they have squabbled for years. Each has called police on the other numerous times about various issues. Even the FBI recently investigated Soluri's claim she was the victim of a hate crime.

Soluri said she won't give up her fight for her pit bulls.

"If my dogs were guilty, I'm a big person to admit they are guilty," she said. "But they didn't do anything."

Boy on Trial for Allegedly Killing Neo-Nazi Father

The trial began Tuesday for a boy accused of killing his father. The now 12-year-old-boy has plead not guilty by reason of insanity in the point-blank shooting death of white supremacist leader Jeff Hall. If he is found guilty, the boy will be jailed until his 23rd birthday. Jacob Rascon reports from Riverside for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on Oct. 30, 2012.

The trial began Tuesday against a 12-year-old boy accused of executing his neo-Nazi father as he slept on the family's living room couch, in what prosecutors call "a case that shocks the conscience."

Last May, the boy, then 10, allegedly fatally shot his father Jeff Hall, a white supremacist leader and the west coast director for the National Socialist Movement.

Attorneys for the child, who has admitted to the killing in his Riverside home, blame the murder on the neo-Nazi environment. They also say the boy's stepmother encouraged him to pull the trigger.

But prosecutors argue the "cold, calculated murder" was totally unrelated to neo-Nazism.

Before he was a white supremacist, Jeff Hall was a construction worker in the Inland Empire. Family members described him as "loving" and a "good father" at that time.

His son, who would later kill him, was not loving or good, according to prosecutors. They pointed out that officials kicked the boy out of as many as nine elementary schools for bad behavior. He allegedly stabbed a teacher with a pencil once and choked another with a telephone cord.

Prosecutors say the boy told his younger sister he would shoot their father two days before he did. She will testify later in the trial.

In a taped interview between the boy and a detective shown in court, the boy can heard saying that he killed his father because he'd had enough of his father's abusive behavior.

Attorneys expect the trial to last two weeks.

If convicted, the boy could be jailed until he is 23. He has pleaded not guilty by reasons of insanity.

A surfer was attacked by a shark Tuesday off the California coast, the second such attack this month.

The attack happened just after noon in northern California's Humboldt County in an area known as Bunker Surf Spot.

Witnesses said several people were surfing off the North Jetty when one man started screaming for help. The injured surfer was able to get himself to shore, but he suffered serious bite wounds to his torso and was bleeding heavily, according to witnesses.

The Eureka Times Standard reported that the 25-year-old man was taken to St. Joseph Hospital and was listed in fair condition.

A trained EMT just happened to be on the beach and started treatment immediately. The injured man was then loaded into the back of a pickup truck, and rushed off the beach where he was transferred to a waiting ambulance.

"We could just see that he wad really gashed up and he had four or five serious gashes from his nipple down to his hip and was bleeding out pretty good so we hopped on him right away," an unidentified man said.

The victim was undergoing surgery late Tuesday afternoon.

Another surfer in Santa Barbara was killed by a shark last week. Francisco Solorio was also bitten in the upper torso, but did not survive. The shark in the Southern California attack was determined to be a 15-to-16-foot great white.

Solorio's death marked the first fatal shark attack in the United States this year.

In 2011, there were 75 attacks worldwide, with 29 U.S. attacks, according to annual records kept by the Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File. Of all 2011 attacks, three were in California.

The worldwide figure for 2011 included 12 fatal attacks, none of which were in the United States.

The long-standing battle between American Airlines and its pilots could come to an end as pilots prepare to protest at DFW Airport Wednesday morning.

Union leaders hope the rally will help in their contract talks with the AMR. Board Members for the Allied Pilots Union plan to meet Wednesday afternoon to look at a possible tentative contract agreement with the company. Both sides say they're close to a deal. The airline hopes to have a tentative contract by Thursday.

The negotiating committee for the APA says, "There is potential for an agreement with AMR in the days ahead, but it all comes down to a number of moves management will need to make on key deal points to bring us into the realm of industry standard."

American also wants an agreement. "We are approaching a deal that we hope the APA Board of Directors will soon agree to put out for a ratification vote," says American Airlines spokesperson, Bruce Hicks.

Pilots plan to rally support for a fair contract with a demonstration at DFW Airport at 11:30 a.m.

Pilots argue that even during negotiations, American has been implementing cuts that they say impact pilots' working conditions, pay and retirement security.

The budget slashing began in September after a judge agreed to toss out the pilots' contracts as part of the company's bankruptcy filing.

American argues it has held off on some of the cost-cutting measures to improve relations during negotiations.

The APA Board meets at 3 p.m. on Wednesday and has the special meeting scheduled through Friday.
