It didn't take long for the news that about two dozen NHL players were holding lockout workouts together in Plano to spread through Twitter.

"There are no secrets anymore, with social media and all that stuff," said Sidney Crosby, captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"It was supposed to be very low key," said Tom Hulsey, general manager of the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Plano.

But once the news spread, the crowds started growing.

"There was some good scrimmaging going on right there," observed Connor Walton, who is originally from Toronto.

Hulsey said the StarCenter brought in security to handle the hundreds of people who were turning out every day to watch the practices and forming a line that looped around the building to try to catch players for autographs and pictures.

With the news Thursday afternoon that all league games would be canceled through November because of the lockout, hockey fans said they're looking for whatever professional action they can find.

"I really should be studying," Andrew Gifford said. "This is the only hockey we get right now."

"I don't know when I'm going to see them next on the ice," agreed Hallie Stephenson, who has been at the facility twice this week.

Many are looking for a resolution to the lockout dispute, perhaps no one more than the players.

"They got a little taste of hockey that they're probably missing right now -- we all are," said Crosby, who called the lack of progress in negotiations "disappointing."

American Airlines is making "good progress" in three-week-old contract talks with pilots and will begin funding a new retirement plan to replace contributions to pilots' pension plans, a company executive said in a letter to pilots late Friday.

Senior Vice President Denise Lynn said the airline would begin paying 11 percent into a new 401K retirement program for pilots.

The pilots' pension plans end next month.

At the same time, the airline offered to increase the contribution to 14 percent if pilots approve a new contract.

"I believe good progress has been made and we are approaching a deal that the APA Board of Directors will soon agree to put out for a ratification vote," Lynn wrote to pilots.

Tom Hoban, a spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, said the union had no comment on the letter.

Grand Prairie police took Gabriel Hernandez-Machuca, 33, into custody during a traffic stop on Thursday and turned him over to Dallas police.

Dallas police said Hernandez-Machuca gave detectives details on his involvement in a burglary and attempted sexual assault in the 5100 block of Vanderbilt Avenue and a burglary in the 5100 block of Ridgedale Avenue.

In both burglaries, underwear was stolen from the women's homes, Dallas police had said.

The victim in the Vanderbilt Avenue attack told NBC 5 that she was punched and choked in her home Oct. 18. She said her attacker tried to sexaully assault her, but she fought him off.

Police said they are reviewing other burglaries that may have involved Hernandez-Machuca.

Ten people from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's regional headquarters in Denton are heading to Virginia to help states along the East Coast respond to Hurricane Sandy.

The incident management assistance team includes specialists in mass care, communications, logistics, and operations.

"One of the first things we do is, we get onboard, take a look at what's going on, kind of get a good sense of what's going on on the ground, working closely with the state, their personnel and determining if there's any shortfalls, if there are how can we fill those shortfalls, and make sure that everything's being handled as it the threat comes in and makes landfall," Robert Alvey of FEMA said.

Denton is also sending 2.75 million meals, 775,000 liters of water and several communications trucks from a staging area in Louisiana.

The team leaves Saturday morning and expects to be fully operational on Sunday.

The chilly weather is putting the Weatherford school district's annual Fall Festival on ice.

About 650 athletes from 11 school districts and their families were expected at Kangaroo Stadium for the event, along with about 2,500 volunteers and students.

Patti Young, the district's executive director of special programs, said she got up early on Friday to check weather reports. Expected wind chills in the low 40s were about 10 degrees below what's acceptable for an outdoor school event, prompting the cancellation, she said.

"I had to make a tough decision, a joint decision from the district in the best interest of our students," she said. "It was disappointing but necessary, because we have to think about our children's safety and their welfare."

Teresa Cocke, whose son Robby was one of the athletes, said they were disappointed by the cancellation.

"We got up early this morning, looking forward to it," she said. "Got our phone call, saying it was canceled. I had to break the news to Robby. He was sad."

Young said this event is always scheduled for mid- to late October. In her 18 years with the district, the Fall Festival has never been canceled for weather reasons, she said.

The Fall Festival, which takes a year to plan, is too big to try to reschedule so all the district can do is start planning for next year and hope the weather is warmer, Young said.

Meanwhile, the windy conditions also forced the cancellation of a pre-game spectacle at an Irving school district homecoming game. Students and the superintendent were scheduled to fly over the field in light sport aircraft.

This weekend the rodeo is lassoing in a bigger crowd by bringing in and celebrating more diversity.

It's a Texas tradition that hasn't always showcased its color to the fullest, but at 73 years old, Cleo Hearn, the founder of Cowboys of Color, has been riding on his dream to change that.

"A cowboy doesn't care about the color of your skin -- he just wants to know that you're a cowboy," said Hearn.

Cowboys of color from all over the country are heading to the Mesquite Rodeo for their National Finals Rodeo. The show mixes good old cowboy tricks and presents the history of cowboys of color in Texas.

"The theme of Cowboys of Color is: 'Let us educate you while we entertain you,'" said Hearn. "Let us tell you the wonderful things that blacks, Hispanics, and Indians did for the settling of the west that many history books left out."

The first rodeo Hearn ever put on was in 1968, but it's the 12th consecutive time Cowboys of Color have had their finals at the Mesquite Rodeo.

"Cowboys of Color is exciting, because it plays into every bit of our talents here at the arena," said Jacob Moorehead, Mesquite Rodeo director of events. "This just adds another chapter to what rodeo means to America and the sport."

The event begins on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Emotions Boil Over at Meeting Over School Sex Abuse Case

Hunt Elementary parents said at a heated meeting that they want to know what is being done to prevent another case of sexual abuse after two separate allegations in two years.

Coach Accused of Indecency Warned by Principal: Affidavit

The Collin County Sheriff's Office released the arrest affidavit in the case of a Hunt Elementary School coach accused of indecency with a child.

More Photos and Videos

The Plano school district is putting safety measures in place after two incidents of suspected sexual abuse between a teacher and a student at a Murphy elementary school within two years.

Last week, Todd Reich, a gym teacher at Martha Hunt Elementary, was arrested on suspicion of indecency with a child.

His arrest came less than a year after a teacher at the school, Joseph Garbarini, was sentenced to more than 60 years for a similar incident.

On Tuesday, parents of students at Martha Hunt Elementary ripped into administrators for not putting safety measures into place.

Steve Cuny, a father of four students, said simple measures, such as more cameras and doors that allow people to look into rooms, were not in place in certain parts of the school.

Plano Independent School District Superintendent Richard Matkin told parents in a letter that he had heard their concerns and that changes were on the way.

"It was with the best of intentions that the district hosted the parent meeting on October 23 to connect the Hunt Elementary School parents and families with additional resources and information," he wrote. "I realize that many walked away from the meeting feeling unheard, and I want to convey my apologies for this sentiment."

The letter listed the following changes that schools officials plan to implement:

  • Additional cameras will be added to gymnasiums and common areas. The current plan being implemented is to increase from 40 cameras to 88 cameras.
  • All solid doors on offices and classrooms are currently being modified to contain glass/windows.
  • Additional counseling staff will be assigned to the campus.
  • A full‐time assistant principal will be assigned to the campus.
  • All paper and window coverings will be removed from doors and interior windows. However, security systems for lock‐ins, lock‐downs and storm procedures will be followed when necessary.
  • Members of the campus leadership team will be in every classroom on a daily basis.
  • Training will be provided for Hunt Elementary School personnel related to the particular issues faced this month.
  • The district will engage a third‐party review of its human resources practices and procedures to validate current processes.

Benjamin Conner, one of the concerned parents at the Tuesday meeting, said the changes would ease parents worries.

"The steps they outlined in the email were kind of exactly what we wanted to hear on Tuesday night," he said. "From my perspective, it's a step in the right direction. It's positive. People are excited to hear that there are safety measures being put in place."

Conner said he plans to make sure the district follows up on its word. He also mentioned that another meeting between parents and administrators is being planned.

City leaders say the tree canopy in Denton is smaller than the national standard, and they want to buy property to save trees.

Denton wants to create more spaces like the park around Donald Welch's home.

Welch said the trees around his home have kept him planted in his community for more than 12 years.

"This looked so nice, I couldn't resist it," he said. "My wife and I can come out in the mornings and drink coffee and watch the squirrels or whatever animals are running around; same thing in the evenings."

But creating such park spaces is challenge in a city where development often overshadows trees. Denton's urban forester, Angie Kralik, said the city's tree canopy is 19 percent.

The national standard is 30 percent or more.

"It is not necessarily a negative impact at this point," she said. "We certainly don't want to go below that point."

Kralik said the city hopes to strike a balance between nature and urban growth.

Denton is looking at ways to save the resource, such as planting new trees and buying private property that will be protected from development.

The land would be purchased with money from the city's tree fund. Developers must pay a fee when they cut down certain trees, with the money going into the tree fund.

"We have spent very little of it," Kralik said.

The City Council may appoint a citizen's committee to help identify land that will be purchased to save trees. Denton residents who are interested in such a committee should contact their City Council representative.

Fort Worth police are looking for a man who exposed himself Tuesday to a 9-year-old girl who was walking home from school in the Stop Six neighborhood.

The incident occurred right after school let out in the 2500 block of Marlin Street, just two blocks from Logan Elementary.

Police said the man pulled up alongside the girl in a white work van, opened the doors and exposed himself. Police said the man was masturbating.

The girl was unharmed and ran home.

"We are asking the community for their help, because we need to get this guy identified and possibly off the street if he's messing with our children," Officer Sharron Neal said.

Police and the school district warned parents and the public about the incident, and police cars were visible in the surrounding area on Thursday.

Leticia Lopez read the note about the incident that Fort Worth school district sent home while she walked home with her children Thursday afternoon.

"Yes, it's scary," she said. "I got five girls. I got seven kids. Imagine that; it's kind of scary."

The district sent home the note to parents to help spread the word about the man and his vehicle. They said they hope the note would also start a needed conversation.

"We hope that parents will use this as an opportunity to talk to their children about knowing what plan they need to have in the event that something like this does confront them," Fort Worth Independent School District spokesman Clint Bond said.

Lopez said she is grateful that the district let her know about the incident.

"That's a good note to let us parents know," she said.

While police want the public's help, they urge residents not to contact the. Anyone who sees him should write down his license plate and call police, they said.

Shooting Suspect: I Took That Man's Life

One of the two people arrested in the shooting death of a Good Samaritan outside a Dallas bar publicly confessed and apologized for his role in the slaying during a jailhouse interview.

Donald Morrow, 36, was fatally shot when he attempted to stop a robbery outside Sherlock's Pub & Grill on Oct. 18.

Justin Jones, 19, and Tierra Winters, 17, have been arrested and charged with capital murder in the shooting.

In the jailhouse interview, Jones admitted to everything.

"I feel like, I took that man's life; my life deserves to be tooken," he said.

He offered an apology to Morrow's family and said he plans to plead guilty to capital murder.

"I'm sorry for what I did," he said. "I can't take it back. And if I could take y'all son's place, I would, but I can't. I'm in here, and I got to face the consequences, and I got to deal with this for the rest of my life."

Jones told NBC 5 that he was so high the night he shot Morrow that he barely remembers details about what happened.

"I don't even remember running up to them, waving a gun," he said. "All I remember is, like, I was dreaming, and the man is like somebody swung on me, and the gun went off."

He said he took Xanax, drank alcohol and smoked what he thought was marijuana. The marijuana was laced with PCP, he said.

Jones said he hopes others can learn from him.

"Y'all see the life I chose, and y'all see where that life go me. Y'all see the results I got right, so y'all use me for an example, homie, and go the other way," he said.

Dallas police said Jones and Winters had been on a robbery spree. Jones was the gunman and Winters was the getaway driver, police said.

Jones said Winters should not face capital murder charges because he is the one responsible for Morrow's death.

Deaf Runner, Blind Runner Set to Compete

advertisement

Two runners competing in this weekend's District 5-5A cross-country meet stand out from the crowd.

Cameron Jackson, who is deaf, and Nick Barrera, who is legally blind, run for Ryan High School.

Jackson is among the fastest distance-runners in the nation, completing a 5K in 15:50.

With the use of hearing aids, he's well aware of his surroundings. But when it's race time, he removes them relying on his coaches.

"They'll tell me how the places are and if I'm doing good and if someone has come up, you know, trying to sneak up behind me because I can't see them," Jackson said.

While Jackson can't hear the crowd's thunderous cheers, Barrera said the sounds guide him.

"It's pretty hard in the morning when we go practice, when we're running in the dark," he said.

Barrera refused to use a guide rope depending on his teammates.

"He just looks at me and goes, 'I don't want to use that,' and I was like, 'OK, you don't have to. We'll run next to each other.' We ran four miles," said Jayme Kiraly, one of his coaches.

Their toughness and determination inspire other students.

"Nick can't see very well, and Cameron can't hear. They can do it -- why can't we?" said Luis Barraza, a teammate.

Both Jackson and Barrera hope to run in college.

"I want to show people that it doesn't matter what type of problem you have or something -- you can accomplish anything," Barrera said.

Jackson has already received offers from several schools in the Big 12 and the Southeastern Conference.

Man Receives Voter Card for Dead Mother

advertisement

A North Texas man says he is concerned about the possibility of voter fraud after receiving a voter registration certificate for his deceased mother.

Bill Davis and his wife, who rarely miss an election, said they were excited when their received their cards in the mail.

But there was an extra card -- one for Bill Davis' mother, Isabel. He said he was "just kind of disgusted -- typical bureaucrats."

His mother, who died more than two and half years ago at the age of 96, was still on the voter rolls.

"You hear of dead people voting and stuff like that," he said. "I thought that was something of the past, but I guess there is opportunity for that."

How could it happen? Steve Raborn, the elections administrator for Tarrant County, said voters who registered before the 1970s only had to give their name and address to register to vote.

Raborn said Isabel Davis' registration didn't include vital information such as a Social Security number or driver's license number to cross reference in case she died.

While the state and county courts send information over to the county to help update lists, the database work can take time and, without the vital information, names can be left on the rolls.

"When we get information from the state agencies that provide death information on voters, often time we're not able to match it up with an actual voter because we don't have any additional criteria -- especially if it's a common name, or the address has changed or something like that," Raborn said. "If we think we see a possible match, then we'll send a letter to the voter's home asking the family member if the voter is deceased."

The county sent a letter to Isabel Davis' last known address in 2010, essentially asking her if she was dead or alive. By then, Davis had passed away. Because she didn't respond, she was left on the rolls.

"We have to err on the side of allowing people to vote," Raborn said. "We can't take people off the rolls because we have one uncertain bit of information that they may be deceased."

Raborn said there are not many findings of voter fraud. He also said there are safeguards in place at the polls to make sure fraud is prevented. He noted that poll workers do check sex and age of voters.

That's not good enough for Bill Davis. He said he wants to get his mother off the voter rolls.

"I had to take it upon myself to notify Social Security, notify Medicare," he said. "I didn't think about notifying voter registration, and I don't think very many people would."

The Davises, who are Republicans, said they continue to support voter identification measures in light of what happened to them.

Steve Maxwell, the head of the Tarrant County Democratic Party, said voter ID is not the solution, even though some deceased people can still end up on the rolls.

"It is such a small, negligible problem, that using that kind of a solution -- letting us go to a picture ID in order to accomplish this -- defeats the whole purpose of encouraging as many people to vote as you can," he said. "It's a solution in search of a problem."

Scheme Uses NBC 5 Number on Caller ID

advertisement

Identity thieves and con artists are deliberately falsifying the name and number on caller ID boxes as a way to gain access into consumers' homes and, ultimately, their wallets.

Several viewers called NBC 5 to report the scheme, which is called phone or caller ID spoofing. Their caller ID showed NBC 5, but the caller was trying to sell something -- everything from home security systems to roofing services.

Howard Stevens, a long-time, loyal NBC 5 weather watcher and retired Air Force pilot, said he was surprised to get a call that popped up as NBC 5 on his caller ID.

"I looked down and saw Channel 5 on there, so my first thought was that they wanted to set up an interview to talk to me about my being a weather watcher since 1981," he said.

But the person on the other end of the line was not with NBC 5, but a caller who wanted to set up a meeting at Stevens' Bedford home. Stevens said he didn't catch the reason for the call and promptly hung up the phone.

Caller ID spoofing is telemarketing fraud, said Deanya Kueckelhan, director of the Federal Trade Commission's Southwest Region.

"It is a means that telemarketers or scammers use to entice a caller to pick the phone, and they will say anything, do anything and target everyone to reach your pocketbook," she said.

Euless police Senior Cpl. Joe Hoerth said people are more apt to answer if the caller ID comes from a legitimate business such as NBC 5.

"As a citizen, I would think, too, I would probably answer the phone and figure out, 'Why is the news station calling me for some reason?'" he said.

Retired school principal Martha Partlow thought that when NBC 5 appeared on her caller ID box last spring.

"I thought, 'They must be taking a survey or something,'" she said.

But the caller said he was looking for roofing work after tornadoes ripped through the area. When her husband asked for a name and call-back number, he hung up.

Partlow said she thought potential schemers could be targeting residents who lived on the outskirts of heavily damaged areas because these neighborhoods might not be as well monitored.

"I wondered if they were going to the tax rolls and looking at names, looking at ages, and calling people who were retired or older than the retirement age," she said. "It annoyed me that I thought this may not be as random as it appeared. It may be targeting older people that are in the area."

"As soon as you answer the phone and you find out it's somebody trying to sell you something, the red flag should go up immediately on there," Hoerth said.

Authorities said consumers have to be vigilant.

"You cannot use caller ID alone as the sole authentication for the call," Kueckelhan said.

People should not give out any information on the phone unless they are sure of who is on the other line. Asking for a call-back number and calling the main number of the company are two other suggestions. Hanging up may be the best solution.

Residents should never set up a meeting at their home or tell anyone when they may not be there.

People can also report any potential spoofing calls to the Federal Trade Commission on its website or by calling 877-FTC-HELP. The FTC and other law enforcement agencies use that database to help with enforcement efforts.

Blood Test for Alzheimer's Disease Shows Promise

advertisement

Researchers in North Texas are working on a blood test for Alzheimer's disease and looking at how the disease affects the Latino population.

Alzheimer's disease, the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, is difficult to diagnose, but the research in Fort Worth on the new blood test shows promise.

"We're going to let multiple things in the blood tells us whether someone has Alzheimer's disease, and, as a result, we have a blood test that yields 90 percent accuracy," said Dr. Sid O'Bryant, a researcher at the University of North Texas Health Science Center.

O'Bryant said it will take several years to refine the test and get government approval. Once it is ready, the test could help primary care physicians who are often see first the signs of the disease in patients, he said.

"My goal is to get it into the hands of local primary docs first," he said. "Can we get it to local docs so they can say, 'Now I need to get them to specialty clinics to make sure we get the right diagnosis and the right treatments?'"

O'Bryant, who leads the Texas Alzheimer's Research & Care Consortium, a group of scientists working to bring cures and innovative treatments to those with age-related diseases, said Alzheimer's disease is a huge public health issue.

The 2012 Journal of the Alzheimer's Association reports that 5.4 million Americans have the disease.

Millions more will develop it. Whites make up the great majority, but blacks and Latinos have a higher risk of developing it.

"It's (Latinos) the largest ethnic group in the Unites States, and there's almost no literature, and it's a major problem," O'Bryant said. "I looked at it and said, 'We can do something about this.' There's plenty of reasoning to suggest the disease may impact Hispanics differently."

"Diabetes is one of the risk factors for Alzheimer's, and we know the prevalence of diabetes in the Hispanic population is huge," said Liz Trevino, UNTHSC School of Public Health assistant professor.

She said she believes some Latino patients don't get help early enough because of cultural barriers and a lack of awareness.

"Many of our Hispanics don't go there," Trevino said. "They keep it from their families. They won't say, 'My mother or someone lost their memory.'"

Sarah Canales, of Fort Worth, said "it was like they hit me in the gut" when she learned four years ago that her mother, Juanita Renteria, had Alzheimer's disease.

"I cried just thinking about it," she said. "It's emotional. She's always been my rock. She's been there for me, and now it's my turn to be there for her. I'm going to do my best to keep her here as long as I can."

Renteria, 83, agreed to move in her with daughter and her son-in-law, and she gave up driving.

"There was a lot of traffic," she said. "And for the first time in my life, I was scared, so I said, 'It's time for me to stop driving.'"

"We're lucky hers is a slow progression," Canales said.

Canales said she feels fortunate that she and her mother can talk about the disease, learn about it together and get support. Both attend free group sessions offered by the Alzheimer's Association - North Central Texas Chapter.

The are walking with thousands of others Saturday in Fort Worth in the annual Walk to End Alzheimer's. It the 20th year for the fundraiser in Fort Worth.

Canales said she hopes sharing the story about her mother's journey will encourage more people to get out and walk, too.

"In the Hispanic community, I feel like we don't reach out to get help or find out what is out there," she said.

Hicks was not working off-duty as security at the store.

Keller Police Chief Mark Hafner said a Kohl's employee detained the shoplifting suspect at the store. When Hicks arrived, the suspect began struggling with him and tried to get the his weapon, police said.

"He (the officer) feared for his life," Hafner said. "The suspect was grabbing for his weapon. He said he was going to kill him, and that is being corroborated right now by people who were shopping at the store."

Hafner said Hicks fired four shots at the 40-year-old suspect.

The man was not armed.

Kohl's employees were inside the store at the time of the shooting. None immediately able to answer questions about the shooting.

Hicks, a 10-year veteran of the Keller Police Department, is in the hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained to the chest.

The suspect, whose name was not released Thursday night, was transported by CareFlite to John Peter Smith Hospital, where he later died.

Police are searching for a gunman after a man walked into a Dallas gas station with gunshot wounds Friday morning.

Authorities received a call at about 2:30 a.m. about an active shooter on the 4600-block of Samuell Boulevard.

Officers are still sorting out the details.

Police tell NBC 5 that Marcus Walcott, 34, drove to the Raceway gas station on Jim Miller Road and Samuell Boulevard after an armed robber ripped a radio out of his white Cadillac. The gunman shot him twice and continued to fire shots as Walcott drove off.

Walcott, who had a passenger in the vehicle, drove down the road to the gas station for help with two flat tires and a shattered windshield from the bullet, according to authorities.

The car stopped at one of the gas pumps.

An ambulance rushed the Walcott to Baylor Hospital. He is expected to survive.

Crime scene technicians took fingerprints from the car door handle, hoping the robber touched it when he reached into the vehicle to snatch the radio.

The gunman is still on the run.

Police records show that Walcott has a criminal past. He was convicted of child pornography possession and sexual assault in August 1999, and convicted of possession of a controlled substance in September 2011.

A passenger on a Dallas Area Rapid Transit train was injured Wednesday night in a stabbing in Dallas.

The passenger was stabbed on a southbound Green Line train at about 6:45 p.m. The train stopped at the Lake June Station, where the victim was transported to Baylor Medical Center.

There has been no information on the victim's condition.

Police said there was some sort of arguement before the passenger was attacked. There has been no additional information regarding whether or not the two knew each other, or if this was a random attack.

The attacker did get off the train after the passenger was stabbed. No one is in custody.

Investigators examined the train car where the stabbing occurred and authorities are actively searching for this person.

DART spokesman Morgan Lyons told NBC 5 the Lake June Station is equipped with cameras. It was not known if the cameras captured any video of the stabbing, but any video would be used in the investigation, Lyons said.

"We've taken many steps to strengthen safety this year," said Lyons. "We will look for areas to improve while we investigate this incident."

Train service on the Green Line has not been interrupted. The other passengers were put onto another train.

Judge Says Pilar, Deion Prenup is Valid

A judge overseeing the divorce of Pilar and Deion Sanders says their pre-nuptial agreement is valid.

More Photos and Videos

The bitter divorce battle between Deion and Pilar Sanders continued in a Collin County courtroom Wednesday.

The couple is at odds over their prenuptial agreement and child support payments.

Pilar Sanders' attorneys alleged that the prenuptial agreement was partially forged and also was partially signed under pressure.

Deion Sanders said his wife took the deal more than 12 years ago and is now seeking more money.

"It's greed," he said. "You signed the contract. We had a prenuptial, and now you don't like the terms of it because of the realization that it's over, your lifestyle will no longer be the same way. It's greed."

On Wednesday afternoon, the judge overseeing the dispute said Pilar Sanders signed the agreement, that she did so voluntarily and that she cannot bring the claim that it is invalid before the court again.

"It's David and Goliath," said her attorney, Larry Friedman. "We stay the course. We're the underdog, and it's hard to win when you play by the rules."

Pilar Sanders also asked that her husband be held in contempt of court. The former model claims he's not paying the $10,500-per-month child support that the judge ordered.

"I'm not going to give up for my children," she said. "I'm going to continue to fight for what they want and deserve."

Deion Sanders insists that $10,500 is too much money, and he claims he has been paying the maximum amount that the state allows but didn't specify an exact amount.

An arbitrator will handle the divorce case from here. As the prenuptial agreement is written, Pilar Sanders received a $100,000 signing bonus when she signed it and will get $1 million when the divorce is final.

"I'm just tired of this," Deion Sanders said. "Move on. Go on with your life. Let's do it. You got a mil coming. Let's go. Let's do it."

"I didn't marry hm for money, obviously," Pilar Sanders said. "I've been married to him for 14 years. My intent was to marry forever, but obviously, it wasn't his."

American Airlines to Add 2,500 Pilots

advertisement

American Airlines plans to add 2,500 new pilots over the next five years in a combination of new hires and recalls of furloughed pilots, CEO Tom Horton said on Wednesday in a letter to employees.

The announcement, which comes amid tumultuous contract negotiations, was met with skepticism by the pilots' union.

First Officer Tom Hoban, a spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, suggested the airline was "dangling" the prospect of new jobs as a negotiating tactic.

"Do they think we're stupid?" he asked. "This isn't our first rodeo."

He added both sides seem to be making progress in the face-to-face negotiations, which began nearly three weeks ago.

Company spokesman Bruce Hicks said the timing of the announcement had nothing to do with the talks.

In fact, the plans to hire new pilots were revealed in detail in a letter to pilots by Vice President of Flight John Hale on June 1, Hicks said.

Just last week, the bankrupt carrier  announced plans to hire 1,500 new flight attendants in the next year.

Horton said in his letter that the new jobs come as the airline expands internationally and buys new jets.

"We are rapidly building the youngest and most efficient fleet in the industry, with 550 new aircraft on their way," Horton wrote.

The Fort Worth-based airline plans to add flights from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Seoul, South Korea, and Lima, Peru; from Chicago to Dusseldorf, Germany; and from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Dublin.

"The new American is getting closer every day," Horton said.

American has already reached concessionary labor deals with flight attendants and ground workers, and a deal with pilots is seen as one of the last obstacles before the airline can emerge from bankruptcy.

Surfer Was Killed by Great White Shark

Deadly Shark Attack in Santa Barbara County

Nearly two years to the day after a deadly shark attack near Lompoc, another surfer was killed on Tuesday. The victim has been identified as 39-year-old Francisco Javier Solorio Junior. Gordon Tokumatsu reports from Surf Beach for the NBC4 News at 6 p.m. on Oct. 23, 2012

Shark Behavior Remains a Mystery, Expert Says

In the wake of a fatal shark attack in Santa Barbara County, shark expert Dr. Christopher Lowe explains that while shark sightings along the coastline are up, the chances of a human being attacked remain low. Beverly White reports for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m., Oct. 23, 2012.

More Photos and Videos

A day after a 39-year-old surfer was fatally attacked in the waters off remote Surf Beach in Santa Barbara County, authorities said Wednesday that a 15-to-16-foot great white shark killed him.

Francisco Javier Solorio Jr. of Orcutt died Tuesday after having been bitten in the upper left torso, according to an investigation from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department.

A fellow surfer pulled Solorio ashore and performed CPR, which was taken over by responding paramedics from surrounding Vandenberg Air Force Base. He was pronounced dead at the beach, near Lompoc.

Experts had said it was likely that only a great white shark could inflict that kind of fatal harm, and the sheriff's department released its expert's findings Wednesday.

"The shark in this tragic incident has been positively identified as a 15' – 16' foot Great White Shark. Ralph Collier from the Shark Research Committee in Chatsworth, CA, made the determination today after examining the decedent's body," the sheriff's department said in a statement Wednesday evening.

Sgt. Mark Williams of the sheriff's department had said earlier in the day that there have been several shark sightings in the broader area in recent months.

Solorio's death came almost exactly two years after a great white attack killed 19-year-old bodyboarder Lucas Ransom at the same beach. A memorial for Ransom stands near the now-closed entrance to Surf Beach.

On Wednesday, family members would not speak about Solorio, but a neighbor said the surfer had lived with a wife a young daughter.

Solorio's friend Brent Lieberman said his buddy's passion was surfing, though he worked in construction.

"He always had a good time when he was out surfing," said Lieberman said, who provided the photo at right of his friend.

"Any time you enter the ocean, you become part of the food chain. It's just something you understand when you paddle out," Lieberman added.

Vandenberg officials had closed all beaches adjacent the Air Force base for 72 hours beginning Tuesday.

"The intent is to allow time for any potential hazard to leave the area," said Col. Nina Armagno, 30th Space Wing commander, in a statement. "Officials from Vandenberg and Santa Barbara County are working together to reopen our beaches."

Solorio's death marks the first fatal shark attack in the United States this year.

In 2011, there were 75 cases of unprovoked shark attacks against humans worldwide, with 29 U.S. attacks, according to annual records kept by the Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File.

Of all 2011 attacks, three were in California.

The worldwide figure for 2011 included 12 fatal attacks, none of which were in the United States.

Fairgoers React to the Big Tex Blaze

Attendees at the State Fair of Texas react to the destructive fire that burnt through the iconic Big Tex.

Dallas fire officials say an electrical short in Big Tex's wiring caused the fiery demise of the towering cowboy who had been an icon of the State Fair of Texas for 60 years.

Dallas Fire-Rescue released the official cause of the fire on Tuesday, saying it was due to an "unspecified electrical short."

The 52-foot-tall cowboy who greeted fair-goers with a "Howdy, folks!" was destroyed by fire on Friday.

After the blaze was extinguished, the tarp-covered remains were hauled from the fairgrounds on a flatbed truck in a procession resembling a funeral.

Fair organizers have vowed to rebuild Big Tex for next year.

Lewisville police shot  and killed an armed man after he threatened a drive-thru customer at an area McDonald's Wednesday night, police say.

According to police, the armed man, 31-year-old Roger Preson Hamill of Durant, Okla, walked up to and threatened a customer at the drive-thru at the McDonald's on Farm-to-Market Road 3040 at about 10:20 p.m.

An employee inside the restaurant saw the armed man and, fearing the restaurant was about to be robbed, called the police.

As the Hamill ran away, the employee was able to get a description of him, his truck and Oklahoma license plate.

Police in the area quickly caught up with Hamill as he tried to slip away through a strip mall parking lot behind McDonald's.  As he approached the frontage road to Interstate 35 near the Vista Ridge Mall, three Lewisville police officers ordered the gunman out of the car.

Capt. Kevin Deaver, with the Lewisville Police Department, said that when Hamill got out of the truck he pointed his weapon at the officers and they opened fire.

Right now, police are not saying how many of the three officers shot at Hamill,  though evidence shows at least a dozen rounds were fired.

Paramedics rushed Hamill to the hospital in an unknown condition where he was later confirmed to have died.

Police said the drive-thru customer, who was not injured in the altercation, and Hamill did not know each other and that they aren't sure why the man was targeted. They also say that Hamill didn't demand any money from the customer or restaurant.

All three officers involved in the shooting are on routine administrative leave as the incident is investigated.  The Texas Rangers are assisting in the investigation.

Coach Accused of Indecency Warned by Principal: Affidavit

The Collin County Sheriff's Office released the arrest affidavit in the case of a Hunt Elementary School coach accused of indecency with a child.

Elementary Coach Charged With Indecency With Child

A PE coach at an elementary school in Murphy has been charged with indecency with a child by sexual contact. Todd Alan Reich, 38, is free on bond.

More Photos and Videos

Parents at an elementary school in Murphy gave school district officials an earful Tuesday night during a packed meeting about two allegations of sexual abuse in two years.

Todd Reich, a coach at Hunt Elementary, was arrested last week on suspicion of indecency with a child. He is free on bond.

The allegations against Reich are the second case at the school in two years. In 2010, Joseph Garbarini was sentenced to 62 years in prison.

Parents are well aware of the school's recent history and wanted to hear what was being done to prevent another case.

Benjamin Conner told child advocate workers and Plano Independent School District Superintendent Richard Matkin at Tuesday's meeting that their answers weren't quelling parents' fears.

"They're here, not able to answer any questions about what safety measures are in place, whether or not they've had a sexual abuse response team in here, why the nurses aren't certified examiners," Conner said. "He hasn't answered any of those questions, has he? This is the problem. It's not that it happened and we don't have an answer today, it's that this has happened before."

Matkin told the crowd that the meeting wasn't a question-and-answer session. Instead, parents had to fill out a form to ask a question that had to be approved by the district's attorney because the incident is under police investigation, he said.

"This was just simply to tell you what our procedures were, to give you the opportunity to submit questions that we can answer through advisement," Matkin told the crowd.

It did little to quiet down the more than 200 parents that packed the gymnasium.

Steve Cuny, the father of four children at Hunt Elementary, hasn't allowed them back to school because he fears for their safety.

"I'm concerned with what's happening now, forward," he said. "Nobody's been forthcoming on telling me who is going to talk to my children about what happened. Nobody is telling me
what is going on in the school to make sure my kids are protected."

Cuny said he's allowing his kids to go back so he doesn't face truancy charges.

He asked district officials if more cameras were being installed or if doors were being taken out of offices to prevent teachers from being alone with students. District officials couldn't comment and said a third party was looking into the how the district hires and does background checks on potential employees.

The responses weren't enough for some parents.

"This meeting is an insult," Conner told officials.

District spokeswoman Leslie Range-Stanton told NBC 5 that parental questions would be answered on the district's website. Range-Stanton also said another meeting would be set up to continue the discussion.

NBC 5 asked to speak with Matkin on camera, but a district official declined the interview.

Voluntary Drug Recall Widespread in North Texas

At least 34 North Texas hospitals and clinics received medicine from a Massachusetts drug-maker linked to a nationwide outbreak of meningitis, according to a new list released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration late Tuesday.

Amid safety concerns, the FDA has called for a voluntary recall of all medicine shipped from the New England Compound Center since May 21, not just the steroid injections believed to have caused meningitis.

Investigators have already linked the tainted medicine to one case of the disease in North Texas -- a patient at the Dallas Back Pain Management center.

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Southlake has previously acknowledged receiving tainted medicine from the New England facility but says it immediately pulled the drugs and notified patients.

Other North Texas hospitals that are included on the FDA's new list as receiving other medicine from the compounding center include:

  • Childrens Medical Center in Dallas. A spokesman says it treated 34 patients with amino acids not linked to any illness, and notified all of them as a precaution.
  • Cook Childrens Medical Center in Fort Worth. The hospital is researching why it is on the list and expects to release more information on Wednesday, spokeswoman Kristin Peaks said.
  • Medical City in Dallas. The hospital immediately pulled all drugs it bought from the New England Compounding Center and is following up with patients, spokeswoman Chris Hawes said.
  • Medical Center of Arlington. The hospital said it immediately pulled the medicine in question as soon as it learned of the recall but a "small number" of patients had already received doses. "While these medications have not currently been confirmed as causing infections and authorities believe the risk is very low, we are in the process of notifying these patients out of an abundance of caution," the hospital said in a statement.
  • UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. "UTSW had a small inventory of the topical cream, which was pulled as soon as the FDA advisory came out," the hospital said in a statement.
  • Huguley Memorial Medical Center in Fort Worth.
  • Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth.

NBC 5 could not reach anyone from Huguley or Plaza Medical hospitals for comment.

A few other North Texas health care providers were on an early list of customers that the FDA posted Monday but then later pulled because of concerns over its accuracy.

Baylor Medical Center, Childrens Medical Center in Plano and Dr. Douglas Lorimer in Fort Worth were not included on the new, updated list released Tuesday and are not involved in the voluntary recall.

A Texas man is raising money to bring a fellow Marine's four-legged friend to the United States from Afghanistan.

Carlos Plata, of Lubbock, served side by side with Shaun Duling for two deployments.

"We're Marines," Plata said. "We not only keep in contact with each other, but we take care of each other."

Duling befriended a stray named "Bolt" when he went back to Afghanistan for a third tour.

"He kind of took to me and, since I got there, everywhere I went, he was pretty much by my side or behind me," he said.

But the two were separated when his tour of duty ended.

"He just looked sad and confused, and I was just like, 'That can't be the last time I see him,'" Duling said.

With the help of Nowzad.com, a website that helps abandoned animals in Afghanistan, Plata and Duling have raised $4,000.

Bolt should be back by Duling's side in Virginia by Nov. 5.

Deion and Pilar Sanders are heading back to court on Wednesday.

The estranged couple is at odds over their prenuptial agreement and child support payments.

Attorneys for Pilar Sanders claim that Deion is worth $250 million, while she's struggling to make ends meet. In a court motion, her attorneys report that Pilar's electricity was turned off in September and insist she's overwhelmed with debt. They say Deion hasn't been paying his court ordered child support. A judge ordered Deion to pay $10,500 per month in child support, and another $3,500 for a monthly mortgage payment.

Deion is challenging the claim, arguing that $10,000 is six times more than Texas law requires.

Pilar claims she needs $2,000 a month for a special diet for the kids, $900 a month on uniforms and shoes for the kids' sports activities, $500 a month on the children's cell phones, $450 a month for the kids' haircuts and treatments.

The couple has three children together, two sons and a daughter.

The NFL star and former model did sign a prenuptial agreement at the start of their marriage in 1999. Pilar wants it tossed out and claims she was pressured to sign it. It reportedly requires Deion to buy her a home worth half of the value of their estimated $21 million Prosper mansion.  It's at that home that their private problems became very public after a fight on April 23 when Pilar was arrested. Both have been cleared of family violence charges.

A judge did side with Deion and ordered Pilar to stay away from the home.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Collin County Courthouse.

NBC5 has a crew in the courtroom. Check back for updates.

At an order of protection hearing just three days before her estranged husband opened fire inside her workplace, Zina Haughton told a Wisconsin court commissioner about years of abuse.

"I don't want to die. I just don't want to die," she is heard saying on audio recordings released Tuesday.

The hearing was in response to a written request for a restraining order filed Oct. 8. Zina Haughton said her husband, Radcliffe Haughton, was convinced she was cheating on him and threatened to throw acid in her face and burn her and her family with gas.

The couple were face to face in court last Thursday as Zina Haughton described how she feared for her safety.

"Things have gotten too bad, Rad. I just — we need to separate. We need a divorce," she said.

He, in a bizarre twist, asked questions of her as his own attorney.

"Has your husband ever harmed you?" he asked.

"My husband has harmed me for the past 20 years on and off," she replied.

Radcliffe Haughton, who has roots in the Chicago area, told the judge he promised to "make things alright," but after so many years, Zina Haughton had made up her mind.

"I just want peace of mind and to end this marriage before something bad happens to me," she said.

A four-year restraining order was ultimately granted, but it did little good. Radcliffe Haughton entered the Azana Salon and Spa in Brookfield, Wis., around 11 a.m. Sunday and opened fire. Three women were killed, including Zina Haughton. Four others were injured.

Police say Radcliffe Haughton then shot and killed himself, leaving his 13-year-old daughter without either parent.

An airport baggage handler has been arrested for allegedly stealing $20,000 in brand new U.S. currency from an airplane transporting money to the United States Federal Reserve.

Sources tell NBC 10 $96 million was on its way from Dallas to the Federal Reserve Building in East Rutherford, N.J., back on Oct. 11. When it arrived at Philadelphia International Airport, $20,000 worth of $100 bills were missing.

The heist wasn't discovered until the packages of cash were being unloaded off a Dunbar armored car for inventory. That's when officials saw one package had been opened.

"The money was taken sometime between the flight landing at Philadelphia International Airport and the arrival at the Federal Reserve facility in East Rutherford, N.J.," said FBI special agent John Cosenza.

The stolen bills are brand new and aren't scheduled to be put into circulation until next year. They're very distinctive, with an orange "100" and an orange image that's supposed to be the Liberty Bell.

On Tuesday, officials announced Alex Price, 25, was arrested and charged for the currency theft.

Investigators say Price was one of the many baggage handlers they interviewed the day of the theft. When he was initially interviewed, Price claimed he didn't see anyone take anything from the airplane without permission, according to police.

Price was interviewed a second time on Oct. 17 where he claimed he was the only baggage handler who had direct access to the stolen currency, according to investigators. Investigators say Price denied any involvement in the theft and was even willing to undergo a polygraph examination  to prove his innocence.

On Tuesday, around 9:30 a.m., an FBI agent picked up Price and took him to Philadelphia FBI headquarters where he underwent the polygraph exam. At the end of the exam, police say Price confessed to stealing $20,000 of Federal Reserve currency from the flight. He also claimed the stolen money was hidden in a Nissan Maxima that he owned, according to investigators.

Police say Price led FBI agents to his vehicle. The agents searched the Maxima and recovered a string bag containing the stolen U.S. currency, according to investigators. Price was arrested and charged with theft from interstate shipment.

2 Confess to Fatal Shooting Outside Sherlock's

Two people have confessed to a fatal shooting outside a Dallas bar after being arrested by police, investigators say.

According to police, 19-year-old Justin Gerald Jones and 17-year-old Tierra Ladarryl Winters admitted their roles in the fatal shooting of 36-year-old Donald Morrow.

Witnesses reported that Jones pulled a gun on two potential victims outside of Sherlock's when Morrow attempted to hit Jones in an effort to prevent the crime.  Police told NBC 5 that Jones then pulled the trigger, shooting and killing Morrow.

Police said Jones and Winters admitted to robbing several other people in the area before the fatal shooting and that Jones admitted to being the shooter and Winters admitted to being his driver.

In an interview with police, Winters said she drove Jones to several locations where he committed several robberies.  She said she stopped in front of a Chinese restaurant near Park Lane and Central Expressway when Jones got out of the car and started walking toward the highway.  A few moments later, she said she heard a gunshot and saw Jones running toward the car.

She drove through the parking lot, picked up Jones in front of a Sports Authority store, and the pair left the scene.

A man was captured on video surveillance in the area and was later identified by three witnesses, as well as Winters, as Jones.

Police said both Jones and Winters gave investigators information in the case that only the suspects and witnesses would know.

Another witness told police he and Jones committed an aggravated robbery on the 4800-block of Sunnyvale, before the string of robberies that ended with Morrow's murder. The witness told police he and Jones, armed with a small handgun, stole a tan-colored Nissan and that Jones kept the vehicle and later told him that he'd shot someone during a robbery.

Both Jones and Winters have been charged with capital murder.  Bond has not been set for either suspect.

NBC 5's Ben Russell contributed to this report.

Obama vs. Romney: Zingers, But No Knockout

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 23 Oktober 2012 | 22.29

President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney wrangled Monday night over America's place in the world, particularly the Middle East, with Obama mocking Romney's foreign policy ideas and Romney accusing the president of weakening the country's influence abroad.

The debate did not match the intensity or aggression of their Oct. 16 meeting, but the arguments were no less sharp. Their exchanges this time were a bit more nuanced, with no stunning or decisive blows.

Obama's weapon of choice was sarcasm, which he used to paint Romney as out of touch and anachronistic.

Clash on "Horses and Bayonets"

President Barack Obama responded to criticism on military spending from former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney during Monday night's debate with a zinger that quickly reverberated through the Twitterverse and beyond. After Mitt Romney cited the size of the military in 1917 to illustrate what he said was its shrinking under Obama, the president responded that the U.S. does have fewer ships than it did in the early 1900s. "We also have fewer horses and bayonets," he added — a comment that soon went viral.

The most biting remark came in response to Romney's argument for increased military spending, in which he pointed out that the Navy was "smaller now than at any time since 1917" and that the Air Force "is older and smaller than at any time since it was founded in 1947."

Obama responded: "Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines."

Obama used a similar approach when Romney condemned the president's handling of the Arab Spring uprisings.

"What's been happening over the last couple of years is, as we've watched this tumult in the Middle East, this rising tide of chaos occur, you see al-Qaida rushing in, you see other jihadist groups rushing in. And they're throughout many nations in the Middle East," Romney said.

Obama's rejoinder: "Governor Romney, I'm glad that you recognize that Al Qaida is a threat, because a few months ago when you were asked what's the biggest geopolitical threat facing America, you said Russia, not al-Qaida. You said Russia... they're now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because, you know, the Cold War's been over for 20 years.

"But Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s, just like the social policies of the 1950s and the economic policies of the 1920s."

Romney suggested that Obama had taken his Russia comment, in a March interview on CNN, out of context. He said that while Russia remained a "geopolitical foe," Iran was America's "greatest national security threat." Then he accused the president of handling Russian President Vladimir Putin with kid gloves.

Monday's debate marked a downshift in tone from the candidates' last match-up, a town-hall-style meeting in which Romney and Obama walked the stage, often meeting face-to-face and interrupting each other.

The most notable change came from Romney, who slipped into a more passive, relatively agreeable posture. He even agreed with Obama on several things, including the timeline for withdrawing troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014 and the refusal to use military strikes on Syria.

When Romney did pounce, it was often to reiterate a central theme of his campaign: that Obama has not asserted America's goals strongly enough abroad, allowing the country's enemies and rivals, from Iran to China, to take advantage.

"I think they saw weakness where they had expected to find American strength," Romney said. "And I say that because from the very beginning, the president in his campaign four years ago, said he would meet with all the world's worst actors in his first year, he'd sit down with (Venezuelan President Hugo) Chavez and (late North Korean dictator) Kim Jong-Il, with (former Cuban leader Fidel) Castro and President (Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad of Iran. And I think they looked and thought, well, that's an unusual honor to receive from the President of the United States."

Romney continued: "And then the president began what I have called an apology tour, of going to various nations in the Middle East and criticizing America. I think they looked at that and saw weakness."

Obama accused Romney of making all that up.

"Nothing Governor Romney just said is true, starting with this notion of me apologizing. This has been probably the biggest whopper that's been told during the course of this campaign. And every fact checker and every reporter who's looked at it, Governor, has said this is not true."

Obama went on to defend his record of economic sanctions against Iran, which he described as "the toughest, most crippling sanctions ever."

Then he turned to Romney, a wealthy former venture capitalist, and charged him with "investing in a Chinese state oil company that was doing business with the Iranian oil sector."

Romney agreed that economic sanctions on Iran were working but argued that those now in place don't go far enough.

"It's absolutely the right thing to do, to have crippling sanctions. I would have put them in place earlier," he said. "I would tighten those sanctions."

The debate was held at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., with Bob Schieffer, host of CBS's "Face the Nation," moderating. Because Romney and Obama remained seated at a desk with Schieffer, there was less opportunity for dramatic confrontations.

Romney used such confrontations to his advantage in the first debate, on Oct. 3, when Obama seemed passive and disengaged. That debate that marked a turning point in the campaign. Since then, Obama's lead in the polls has slipped, and the race has narrowed to a virtual tie.

In the second debate, the contentious Oct. 16 town-hall meeting, Obama was much more aggressive, but Romney mostly kept pace.

Monday's debate was their last appearance on stage together during the campaign and a final chance to score lasting points in front of tens of millions of viewers.

The pressure was heaviest on Obama, not only to make up for the gains he'd lost but also to take full advantage of a subject — foreign policy — that naturally favors a sitting president.

Led by Schieffer's pointed questions, Romney and Obama sparred on the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya, how many troops to leave in Iraq, how to handle the civil war in Syria, how much to spend on the military and the country's tumultuous negotiations with Iran, along with the implications on Israel.

The more subdued Romney preferred to make broad-stroke swipes at the president rather than disagree with finer policy points.

"Unfortunately, in nowhere in the world is America's influence greater today than it was four years ago," Romney said at one point.

Obama countered that criticism with examples of his efforts to strike the right balance of diplomacy and force.

"The central question at this point is going to be: who is going to be credible to all parties involved?" Obama said. "And they can look at my track record, whether it's Iran sanctions, whether it's dealing with counter-terrorism, whether it's supporting democracy, whether it's supporting women's rights, whether it's supporting religious minorities. And they can say that the President of the United States and the United States of America has stood on the right side of history."

The debate was supposed to focus exclusively on foreign affairs, but neither Romney nor Obama could resist wading back into domestic issues to reprise attacks first leveled in their first two meetings. The digressions included disagreements about education policy, the economy, job growth and energy production.

Schieffer repeatedly had to pull them back to the questions he'd asked. In the debate's final minutes, Romney proclaimed his love for teachers, to which Schieffer finally said, "I think we all love teachers," and made them move on to their closing statements.
