Three Service Dogs Graduate From Patriot Paws

Three service dogs graduated from their Patriot Paws program and are going home to help wounded warriors deal with their injuries.

A organization that matches wounded veterans with service dogs is seeing a growing demand but is bringing in fewer donations.

Rockwall-based Patriot Paws trains service dogs for disabled veterans all over the country at no cost.

The organization recently celebrated its 50th dog placement but, despite its success, still has 57 veterans on a waiting list.

"The veterans have given so much for us, and it costs so much to travel nowadays," founder Lori Stevens said. "The money has to cover for the veterans' travel, for the veterans to stay here, for the special equipment we use."

It can cost up to $30,000 to train a service dog as they learn various tasks. At Patriot Paws, it takes up to 18 months to two years to train a dog and teach it how to support veterans.

But the downtown in donations isn't slowing Patriot Paws' mission.

"It puts a little spark, a little hope in their heart," Stevens said.

When Stevens started Patriot Paws six years ago, she wanted to give wounded service members a new leash on life.

"These are your brothers, your fathers, your nephews, your cousins -- these are not just a soldier off in a far country; this is part of who we are," she said.

Valerie Fry has been training dogs since joining Patriot Paws' prison program in 2008.

"I am a different person today because of being able to work with animals," she said. "It's unconditional love that they give and, as humans, it's something that we don't truly understand -- unconditional love -- until we have an animal in our life."

Surrounding cities are benefiting from the as many as 20,000 fans heading to Frisco for the NCAA Division I Football Championship.

Sam Houston State and North Dakota State are meeting in a rematch of last year's Football Championship Subdivision title game.

"You see the businesses booming around here, the restaurants being packed, people coming in and inquiring about what's going on," said Gabriel Ontiveros, owner and manager of the Essensuals London salon at Plano's Shops at Legacy. "We're trying to capitalize on that by having promotions."

Next door at the Main Street Bistro, general manager Esther Notargiacomo was swamped in a sea of green and gold.

"I have extra servers -- I loaded my staff," she said. "Today is just a little sample, and we're really busy, so I can imagine tomorrow is going to be double and Sunday is going to be worse."

Last year, turnout for the FCS title game broke attendance records.

Frisco city leaders estimate that the game brought in about $5 million to the surrounding Collin County area, noting that most hotels in Plano, Frisco and Allen had sold out.

NDSU fan Jim Buus attended the 2012 game and said he and his friends and family came down for a longer stay this year in order to enjoy the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He said they plan to "walk around Frisco and Plano, spend some money and really take in the sights a little bit more.

"We've been eating, drinking [and] really having a good time," he said.

Tickets, even for standing-room-only space, are sold out.

Kickoff is at noon on Saturday at FC Dallas Stadium. The parking lot opens for tailgaters at 8 a.m.

The father of two girls says a man broke into the family's Cockrell Hill apartment early Friday morning and touched his daughters.

The father told police and reporters that his daughters were watching TV in the front room, where they had been sleeping on a mattress, when a man entered the residence through a back window at about 5:15 a.m. Friday.

The girls said the man told them he was a friend of the family and offered to take them to the store to get candy. At some point the man began touching the girls over the clothing, and one of the girls called out to her father.

As the father came into the room, the man exited the front door.  The father chased the man into the parking lot but was unable to catch him. After the man disappeared, the father called police.

The father said it was dark and all happened very fast and that he didn't get a very good look at the man, though he did provide police with a partial description.  He also adds that the man, despite his claim, was not a friend of the family.

Police said the girls, ages 9 and 5, were taken to an area hospital for an evaluation.  Neither were injured. Police said the man was inside the home for about 10 minutes before he was chased out.

Cockrell Hill police confirmed the man tried to get the girls to leave with him and that there was physical contact between the intruder and the girls, but that that contact was not sexual and they were not injured. Police are continuing to investigate and have classified the incident as burglary of a habitation with intent to commit another felony.  The charge is a first degree felony punishable with a possible life sentence and a fine of $10,000.

The incident took place at the Cedar Square Apartments at 500 Andrews Avenue.

NBC 5's Mark Schnyder contributed to this report.

It was initially believed that the girls were sleeping at the the time the man entered the apartment, that was not the case. We regret the error.

No Paychecks in Fort Worth After "Error"

advertisement

An administrative error is being blamed for why Fort Worth employees did not get paid as normal on Friday.

Nearly 7,000 employees won't see their regular checks in their accounts until as early as Saturday -- if not as late as Monday.

Inside City Hall, it was business as usual on Friday. But city officials said the usual steps to release the city's payroll to employees were not followed Thursday. City spokesman Bill Begley said the payroll was not authorized as it normally is on the day before payday.

"Once we recognized the fact that the paperwork hadn't been done and that the administrative steps hadn't been taken, we focused on trying to rectify that situation to try to get all the paperwork and processes taken care of as quickly as possible so that our employees get their paychecks that they've earned," he said.

Begley said the checks would not arrive until Saturday or as late as Monday, depending on each employee's bank.

"We can't apologize enough," Begley said. "You know, it was an administrative error. We're sorry that it happened."

Begley said City Manager Tom Higgins could recall one other time when payroll didn't go out as planned. It was sometime in the last 30 years when they still printed checks and the printer broke. Employees got their checks later that afternoon instead of in the morning like normal.

City employees say they don't want to experience this direct deposit snafu again.

"I look at it as something that is totally unacceptable," said Peter Talleos, president of the North Texas Association of Public Employees Local 9527. "This is a major metropolitan city, and they (city administrators) should have made some provisions in case something like this would ever happen. Obviously, they haven't."

Talleos says it was most disturbing to him because of where the error took place.

"This is the new system," he said. "And this new system was supposed to make it more concrete that this would never happen."

For employees living paycheck to paycheck, it is an especially tough break. Talleos said he was helping at least one member of his union to pay rent.

The city is asking employees to double check their accounts before paying any bills. But once the checks arrive, the focus will turn to preventing this from happening again.

"We're going to do a thorough investigation to make sure something like this doesn't happen," Begley said.

All city employees were notified of the error on Friday morning.

The city said the Fort Worth City Credit Union would work with members on a case-by-case basis if the delay results in any issues. The city also said that its treasurer has contacted employee banking institutions to see if they can assist and minimize any impacts from the error.

Pizza Delivery Robberies Put People on Edge

advertisement

Dallas pizza delivery people have been robbed three times in the past week, two of them Thursday night.

The robberies in Oak Cliff and Pleasant Grove have stores and neighbors on edge.

According to police reports, around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, a driver for the Pizza Hut in the 2200 block of South Buckner was held up at gunpoint in the 10300 block of Whitingham Drive by two people.

The driver lost $310 cash.

Whitingham neighbor Gerald Green said pizza drivers should not carry so much cash.

"That's not a good idea to have that much money on you, especially around here," he said.

Pizza Hut store manager Leticia Contreras said drivers are trained to carry only a small amount of change and the cash was the driver's personal money.

She said safety is the top priority in pizza delivery and some destinations may become off limits, especially at night.

"I remember at one point, we tried to order a pizza where I stay at," Green said. "They wouldn't deliver in this neighborhood for a while."

At about 9:30 p.m., a driver for the Domino's at 4800 Sunnyvale was robbed at gunpoint in the 4600 block of Stokes Street near Interstate 45 and Loop 12.

According to a police report, the people ran up on the driver in the dark from a vacant lot beside a delivery address that neighbors say is vacant house.

"The one that used to stay in there, he was an old guy and he passed away, so it's kind of been different people coming in and out of there," neighbor Marcell Dobin said.

His wife worries that drivers won't return to deliver the pizza that their children enjoy.

"They should feel safe to come over here," Loretta Dobin said.

Manager Isaac Soto at the Sunnyvale Domino's store said drivers are told to drive away from homes they discover to be vacant.

He said certain apartment complexes are off-limits. Deliveries to others are made only at the front gate and deliveries are refused to some places at night.

Last Saturday night, a driver from a Domino's at 2551 Fort Worth Ave. was beaten up for his pizzas in the 1900 block of Shaw Street, according to police reports.

Aside from the fact they all involve pizza, detectives do not believe the cases are related, Dallas police spokeswoman Melinda Gutierrez said.

No arrests have been made.

Domino's corporate spokesman Tim McIntyre said safety is a top priority for the company, which delivers more than a million times per day. An increase in online ordering has reduced the use of cash, he said.

He issued the following statement:

We work with local law enforcement to help us identify potential trouble spots in any community. Our goal is to deliver to every address within our individual trade areas, but sometimes we've been forced by incidents to take other actions, from curbing deliveries after a specific time of night or eliminating individual streets altogether. If a store has a restricted section within its delivery area, the owner is required by our policy to review it annually to see if it can/should be reopened.

Arlington Twins Play in Cotton Bowl

Smack Talk at Cotton Bowl Tailgating

There was plenty of smack talk in the parking lots around Cowboys Stadium as Aggie and Sooner fans tailgated before the Cotton Bowl Friday.

More Photos and Videos

At Friday night's Cotton Bowl Classic at Cowboys Stadium, the Joeckel family of Arlington will be rooting for Texas A&M.

It's an easy choice considering twin brothers Matt and Luke Joeckel both play on the A&M football team.

"It makes for fun weekends," said Dave Joeckel, the twins' father. "Excitement, that's probably the best way to describe how I feel. And pride that my sons are playing in the Cotton Bowl. They've worked hard. This is a great reward for that hard work."

At the 77th annual Cotton Bowl against Oklahoma, Matt and Luke Joeckel will get to play before their hometown crowd.

The Joeckel twins have been playing football since grade school, when their father was their coach.

"They've always been very competitive. They were always doing something competing against each other and I think it helped them both," said Dave Joeckel.

The twins then played at Arlington High School. Luke Joeckel, the lineman, blocked for his brother Matt Joeckel, the quarterback.

"Luke is kind of the big, more quiet type," said Reecanne Joeckel, their mother. "Matt is more of the talkative, quarterback type. But in a lot of ways they're very similar."

When it came time to select a school, one thing came as no surprise.

"We always knew they'd end up going to the same place," said Dave Joeckel.

One thing that wasn't expected was where they chose to go.

"I played [football] at [Texas] Tech," said Dave Joeckel. "[The twins] were Red Raiders their whole life growing up."

Reecanne Joeckel said the family had a bit of explaining to do.

"Being Texas Tech people, friends were like, 'How did you let that happen?' But, [Texas A&M] was the perfect fit," she said.

And so are the twins.

At College Station, Luke and Matt Joeckel have exact same class schedule, they travel together and they're roommates.

"They get along really well, considering they're brothers and considering they spend that much time together," their mother said. "They're each other's best friends."

Arlington police say they have found the body of a 77-year-old woman with Alzheimer's disease who disappeared last month.

Maria Arrocha wandered out of her Arbor Lane home at New York Avenue and Park Row Lane on Dec. 18.

Arlington police found her body in a wooded area near 1500 E. Abram St. on Thursday afternoon. The Tarrant County medical examiner positively identified the woman as Arrocha on Friday.

Her death was determined to be caused by exposure to the elements.

Martin Arrocha, her son, said he had mixed emotions, saying he was "a little bit angry because we couldn't find her in time, relief because we know she's in a better place today."

Police officers were working closely with volunteer group Search One Rescue Team, which uses K-9s, as part of an ongoing effort to find Maria Arrocha when her body was discovered.

Her family had been searching for Arrocha since her disappearance. They passed out fliers in both English and Spanish throughout North Texas and spent Christmas looking for her.

The only K-9 working for the Denton County Sheriff's Office was found dead on Friday.

Chico, a Belgian Malinois, was reported missing on Dec. 20 in rural Collin County. The dog's handler said the dog ran out when a windstorm that day blew open his fence.

Denton County Sheriff William Travis told NBC 5 that a landowner noticed a dog near his livestock. The landowner was worried about his livestock and shot the dog, not knowing it was the missing K-9.

Travis said the man was distraught once he learned the dog was a K-9 with the sheriff's office.

The sheriff said the dog was not wearing the collar that identifies it as a member of law enforcement.

The landowner will not face any charges.

Travis said the DCSO is planning a funeral and is plans to acquire another K-9.

AA Flight Attendants Sign Off on Potential Merger

In a letter to American employees, CEO Tom Horton said the Fort Worth-based airline is continuing to evaluate whether a merger would be in the bankrupt company's best interests.

The flight attendants' union at American Airlines signed off late Thursday on a merger plan with US Airways.

Laura Glading, president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, said she signed a memorandum of understanding, which details seniority and other issues -- essentially how employees at both airlines would work together in the event of a merger.

"I hope it clears the path for a quick and efficient merger," she said.

She said she could not discuss specifics.

Meanwhile, earlier Thursday, American Airlines announced it will decide whether it also supports the merger in "a matter of weeks," CEO Tom Horton said.

In a letter to American employees, Horton said the Fort Worth-based airline is continuing to evaluate whether a merger would be in the bankrupt company's best interests.

"While I cannot give you a precise date, I can tell you that we expect to bring this to conclusion in a matter of weeks," Horton wrote.

If the two companies do combine, it would create the world's largest airline.

The flight attendants' move follows a similar action by pilots on Saturday.

The Allied Pilots Association also signed off on its own plan to combine workforces.

The Board of Directors of American Airlines' parent company, AMR Corp., is scheduled to meet Jan. 9, but it appeared a merger plan would not be ready to consider by then.

Managers of US Airways have said if they are successful in gaining control of the new carrier, they would keep its headquarters in Fort Worth and keep the American name. The US Airways brand would go away.

Analysts have said a merger is the best way for American to compete against rivals United and Delta.

Dallas police are questioning two people after someone tried to run over two officers.

A witness flagged down officers in the 1500 block of South Buckner Boulevard and told them about a possible robbery in progress.

The officers saw one of the people exit and approach a vehicle and told them to show their hands. The person in the vehicle then tried to run over the officers, police said.

Two officers shot at the vehicle, which sped away, police said.

The vehicle was located a short distance away. Officers were investigating a truck with a bullet hole that had crashed into a fence a block away from the crime scene.

Police said one suspect was in custody. A second person who was found near the vehicle was also being questioned in the case, police said.

Hurst Officer Fired After "Embarrassing" Video

Teen Files Complaint in Hurst Officer Video

The family of Andrew Rodriguez filed a complaint against the Hurst police officer they say used excessive force violating the teen's civil rights in a video posted on YouTube.

Mother Wants Hurst Police Officer's Badge

The mother of 17-year-old seen in a YouTube video being kneed in the back and cursed at by a Hurst police officer says she wants the officer fired and charged with aggravated asault.

More Photos and Videos

Hurst police officer Disraeli Arnold has been fired after being recorded on video threatening a teen and using profane language.

Arnold was recorded in November running to assist an officer subduing a teenager and ultimately kneeing the teen in the back of the head while yelling and threatening him.

The teen's mother, Kelly Pope, didn't object to her son being arrested, just the force used to take the teen into custody.

"He [her son] knows that he handled it badly at first, that he should have been a little more cooperative. But, you know, the second officer -- there was no reason for it," Pope said in November. "He (Arnold) comes up at a jolting sprint, kneed him in the back of the head and, as you can see on the video, he says, 'If you move I'm going to [expletive] kill you.'"

While the teen was in custody and being escorted to a police car, Arnold then paraded in front of the teen's friend, who was recording the arrest, and said, "You got it on tape? Arnold, 654!"

Using the video as evidence, the teen's mother filed a complaint with the Hurst Police Department that led to an internal affairs investigation. The mother said she hoped the officer would either turn in his badge or be fired.

Dashcam video released several days later showed the teen, prior to Arnold arriving at the scene, arguing with Officer Miguel Jimenez and resisting arrest -- a offense for which he was charged.

On Thursday, Hurst police said Arnold was "indefinitely suspended for violations of Hurst Police Department General Orders and Civil Service rules relating to his actions on Nov. 20, 2012" and "an internal affairs investigation was conducted for violations ... to include the unnecessary use of force, being disrespectful to a citizen, and the use of indecent, profane, or harsh language in the performance of official duties."

Despite Pope's claim of excessive force, the internal affairs investigation determined the amount of force used by Arnold was reasonable since he believed Jimenez was struggling to subdue the teen.

The investigation did find, however, that Arnold was disrespectful to a citizen and "used indecent, profane, and harsh language in the performance of his official duties, and conducted himself in a manner which brought discredit to himself and the Hurst Police Department."

"You can't help but be embarrassed -- not only for the officers that work in our department, but for anybody in the law enforcement profession," Hurst Assistant Chief Steve Niekamp said in November. "You just expect when an officer shows up, they're going to be in charge. You don't want the foul language, anything that looks like it might be overreaction. You just want to be professional, calm and in control of the scene."

Prior to the department's latest ruling, Arnold had been placed on administrative leave.

Arnold had been with the department for four years and, according to a performance assessment and disciplinary file released by Hurst police after the incident, he met or exceeded police standards in nearly every assessment. The document also noted in May, 2010, that "Officer Arnold's enthusiasm may make him overzealous at times, which can cloud his judgment when it comes to policy, procedure and tactics. Sometimes he needs to step back and see the big picture and risks involved."

Arnold has 10 days to appeal the termination.

NBC 5's Scott Gordon contributed to this report.

Have you seen a link on Facebook or Twitter that says you can earn two free Southwest Airlines tickets?

Well, don't click on it.

Southwest Airlines said it's working with its legal department to have the links and ads removed from various social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Southwest spokesperson Brooks Thomas said the Dallas-based carrier is not offering two free tickets.

"If it's not in an email officially from us, if it doesn't have Southwest.com in it or if it doesn't take you to a southwest.com or blog.southwest.com property, then it's usually erroneous and a big red flag not to click on it," Thomas said.

The scheme isn't new. It also popped up on social media in late 2011.

Southwest Airlines said if you have already clicked on the link, it's a good time to reset your password.

River Otter Makes Rare Appearance in San Francisco

Jouko van der Kruijssen

A river otter dubbed Sutro Sam is living in a pool in the ruins of the historic Sutro Baths in San Francisco.

San Francisco's first river otter in decades has appeared in the ruins of historic baths near the city's coast, stumping and delighting locals — and happily devouring the goldfish they dump there.

The otter has been dubbed Sutro Sam by scientists, for his residency in a spring-fed freshwater pool among the ruins of the historic swimming complex known as the Sutro Baths.

Sam favors a pool full of oversized goldfish among the ruins, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Scientists say he appears to have swum across the Golden Gate from Marin County, just across the strait to the city's north, but they are not sure.

So many otters have popped up in Marin that some wildlife-conscious resident has erected an "Otter Crossing" sign in the town of Larkspur, the newspaper reported.

Sutro Sam is not afraid of people and is well-fed and healthy, the scientists say. The pool he's found at Sutro is perfect for an otter — it's next to the ocean but is fed with fresh water from underground, the newspaper reported.

He's eating carp-sized goldfish, dumped there by residents, "like potato chips," according to Megan Isadore of the River Otter Ecology Project.

Sam has been in the waters near Sutro since September, the newspaper reported. Scientists will conduct tests on the jelly found in his intestines, which may help to digest fish bones. In the meantime, otter-watchers are asked to keep their dogs away from Sam's pool — so the dogs don't get bitten.

To donate to the Sam-testing efforts, visit riverotterecology.org.

McKinney firefighters pulled a man out of his burning apartment, atop a non-profit children's charity, in Collin County Thursday night.

The fire started at Storybook Ranch on Custer Road at about 9 p.m.

The ranch foreman, Michael Javier, was trapped in his second floor apartment for more than 10 minutes before firefighters pulled him out of a window.

Javier saw the flames spreading though the Wild Bill and Calamity Jane's events and entertainment facility below his apartment, but the fire blocked his escape route. Javier tried to break a window, but couldn't.

"There's only one way up, and one way down from that upstairs apartment," says Javier. " It was consumed by fire that had started at the other end of the building.  By the time I smelled the smoke, and was able to make it to the door, the flames and the smoke drove me back into my apartment."

He called 911 and signaled his location to firefighters with a flashlight. Crews broke through the window with an ax and pulled Javier to safety.

"I would like to find the two gentlemen, because they literally saved my life," says Javier.

Javier escaped without injury, but lost everything he owned in the fire.

"Everything that I owned in the world was in my home, and it's all material stuff and eventually it can be replaced, but I'm thankful that I got out," says Javier.

Javier has been the ranch foreman for about three years and lived above the Wild Bill and Calamity Jane's Events and Entertainment Facility.

Storybook Ranch is non-profit children's charity holds community events and horse camps for special needs and underprivileged kids.

Right now, the ranch is assessing just how much damage has been done.

"We'll be okay," says Program Director John Schaar. "We'll  rebuild. We have already had a lot of support from the community.  Our local Home Depot has already been out.  They are bringing out some temporary fence and some temporary needs for us, and some people are already helping."

There's a message on the ranch's website:

"We will continue to update our beloved guests and friends of the ranch about the damage and our rebuilding efforts. We know that with support from our community and friends, much like the legend of the Phoenix, we will begin again out of the ashes. "

Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.

Roberts to Swear in Obama, Sotomayor to Swear in Biden

AP - FILE

President Barack Obama will take the oath of office from Chief Justice John Roberts as he is sworn into his second term, just as he did for his first term in 2009, as pictured above.

With the new Congress sworn in, Washington is now turning its attention to the next leaders to take the oath of office: President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

"I will be honored to again stand on the inaugural platform and take part in this important American tradition," Obama said.

Obama will be sworn in publicly for his second term by Chief Justice John Roberts on Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Day, at the U.S. Capitol, but he will be administered the actual oath a day earlier, as per the Constitution.

Vice President Joe Biden will be sworn in — as per his personal selection — by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, whom he called "a friend" by whom it would be "an incredible honor" to be given the oath.

Sotomayor will become the first Hispanic judge, and only the fourth woman, ever to have administered an oath of office.

The unusual practice of having separate official and ceremonial swearing-in ceremonies is taking place this year because Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, falls on a Sunday, when courts and other public institutions are closed.

As in years past, the Obama and Biden families called on Americans to participate in a National Day of Service Saturday, Jan. 19, in the run-up to the inauguration — this year in honor of Martin Luther King, given the ceremony's coinciding this year with the holiday that honors his birth.

A neighborhood in Irving is America's most diverse neighborhood, according to a real estate website.

A study by Trulia.com says the 75038 zip code is almost equally divided between Asian, black, Hispanic and white residents.

But residents in the zip code say it's hard to believe.

"I'm thinking, 'You're kidding,' because ... I mean, there are a lot of zip codes there in Manhattan," Karl Scherr said.

According to the study, the Irving zip code breaks down to 26 percent Asian, 25 percent black, 23 percent Hispanic, 23 percent white, and 2.5 percent multiracial. The study says the second most diverse neighborhood in America is in Queens in New York City, while the third is Treasure Island in San Francisco.

Irving resident Aniket Sidanale said a certain pocket of zip code 75038 has a concentration of Indian-Americans.

"Most of them I see are like Indians," he said. "Most of the shops around, everything is like Indians here."

Sidanale said many people relocated for work reasons.

"This Irving area is one of the areas in Dallas that is very hot for IT market, and a lot of people who come from IT directly -- they don't want to buy houses, they directly move into apartments," he said.

The zip code also includes the extension of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Orange Line and North Lake College, which bring in more diverse crowds on a daily basis.

"I'm going to call it something like a Florida that brought in a lot of people from outside," Scherr said. "There is not a native Texan environment here."

Sister Saves Brother With Organ Donation

advertisement

A Dallas family is celebrating life this New Year, after one member of the family gave another family member the gift of life.

Many brother-sister pairs say they carry around a piece of their family, for Taylor Parrott and her brother Casey, they mean it literally.

Casey has a rare birth defect that has causes his kidney function to fail. It's a serious condition but it's not a problem for Casey.

Several years ago, Casey's father donated his kidney to replace a failing one.

Then early this year, it all happened again. Casey's kidney wasn't working and he needed another organ donation to survive.

That's where Taylor came in. She got tested and found out she was a rare, perfect genetic match. She offered her kidney to Casey which wasn't the easiest thing to accept.

"It was really tough, it was really tough. The day they came in and told me she was a match, I wasn't excited. I was actually pretty mad. I didn't want to tell anybody, but I was mad about it. I didn't want to put my sister through this. I didn't want to feel greedy," said Casey. "Here I am, 'I need another kidney, you guys up for the challenge?' It was really tough."

"I think just because we've always been so close, we've always shared a very unique and special bond," said Taylor. "The statistics of even being able to get to the point of where we are three months later... it's just amazing."

It's been a particularly special holiday season for the Parrotts because Taylor was able to guarantee Casey a great new year.

"I feel better than I've ever felt," said Casey.

"It's all worth it, absolutely, absolutely," said Taylor.

Fan Paints House in Cowboys Colors

Miguel Andrade's home in Mesquite shows just how die-hard a Dallas Cowboys fan he is, every inch of his home shows off his pride in America's Team.

A Mesquite man who showed off his undying support for the Dallas Cowboys in his home makeover isn't letting Sunday's big loss deflate his spirit.

"I will never, ever, ever be a fair-weather fan -- never," Miguel Andrade said. "I'm a real die-hard Cowboy fan. When they lose, that's when they need me."

He's known around his neighborhood on Longview and Royal Crest streets for his "Cowboys house," which is painted wall to roof in the team's iconic colors.

The 51-year-old father of five fell in love with blue and silver 35 years ago when he moved to Texas from Mexico. The home makeover of his aging house gave him the chance to go all out.

"I love their history," Andrade said. "It's just the greatest institution in football -- eight trips to the Super Bowl, five rings. They are a great, great football team."

He painted the house by himself from scratch in August, working for two months until it was the way he wanted it. From the pennants to the mailbox to the blue lights, no detail was spared.

"I think sometimes, it's a little crazy," said his son, Luisangel Andrade. "Everything he does, he wants to go all out [and] he wants to do it right, so whenever we started doing the Cowboys house, he was like, 'Well, if we're going to do a Cowboys house, we have to go all out.'"

Miguel Andrade said he hopes America's Team will get back up again in the new year. After all, they inspired his American dream.

"We lost it, so it's just another game," he said. "It's gone. It's over. We're just going to start again. Cowboys -- I will love you forever. I'm going to die a Cowboys fan."

Andrade also has a curio cabinet full of Cowboys memorabilia, including a Cowboys wallet, watch and ring, inside his house.

Google Map Provides Window into World's New Year's Resolutions

Google

Google's year-end Zeitgeist roundup included an interactive look at what users around the world were resolving to do more of in 2013.

Google capped its massive year-end Zeitgeist roundup, which catalogued the most-searched items of 2012, with an interactive glimpse at what people around the world were swearing off or resolving to do more of in 2013.

The resolution map mixes Google mapping features with Google translate and invites users (no subscription necessary) to contribute their own goals or peek at what fellow humans are promising themselves as they look ahead to the new year.

The handful of resolutions displayed have remained mostly static since the page launched New Year's Eve and the translation is less than perfect, but good enough to note some universal trends. Not surprisingly, considering resolutions are made the day after one of the biggest party nights of the year, contributors around the world are looking to get in shape and abandon their destructive habits.

In the U.S., one user wants to go back to being a size 4. In Norway someone's swearing off alcohol, while in Brazil another person is trying to kick sweets.

There are also quirky vows being made: One ambitious internet-user from France wants to cook a recipe from every country in the world. In Yemen, someone wants to smile (presumably more). A Floridian aims to grow a mustache, while a California resident would like to listen to more complete albums on Spotify instead of just hit singles.

Google has provided tips on its blog directing users to a number of apps, videos, tools and lists to help resolution-makers stay on track.

For those aiming to travel more (like the South East Asian contributor who would like to walk the Santiago de Compostela Road in Spain) Google's blog suggests its flight search tool, hotel finder, and Google Maps.

For those looking to save cash, hone yoga skills, paint, cook or keep track of finances, Google provides other tools and an inspirational video that might make resolutions stick a little longer.

Family and friends are mourning the sudden death of a 17-year-old high school student.

Max Schwolert, a senior at Flower Mound Marcus High School, died the day after Christmas during a family vacation in Minnesota.

Schwolert had to be admitted to a hospital there with complications from the flu.

"It started out as the flu, then went to pneumonia and a staph infection on top of that, so those three things combined and just took over very quickly," said Michelle Schwolert, his aunt.

She described her nephew as the picture of health -- 6 feet 4 inches tall, young and athletic.

"He was a healthy child," she said. "You can't beat yourself up. How many times has your child had a cold and you just wait it out?"

Friends have been leaving tributes to Max Schwolert at Faith Lutheran Church, where his father is the youth ministry director.

"It's really hard. He was so young and just a really great kid," church member Sarah Wagner said.

"It kind of left me speechless," said her husband, Coleman Wagner. "I wish I had better words to describe it. Knowing how I feel, I can't imagine how Max's family feels right now."

The Schwolert family said he did not have a flu shot this year. While they don't know if it could have saved his life, they are advocating that everyone get one in light of his death.

Some Dallas residents hit the gym Tuesday to get a head start on their New Year resolutions.

Alex Landin didn't waste a minute starting the year off on the right foot -- at Gold's Gym in Uptown.

"Whatever you do on the first day of the year, you'll be doing that for the rest of the year, so I want to get in shape for the rest of the year," he said.

The 36-year-old has a simple resolution -- shed the extra pounds he put on in the past few years.

"I'm getting older -- proud of it, though -- and so I said no more excuses; this is the year I want to go back on top again," Landin said.

Others are joining health clubs for the first time.

Dallas newcomer Larissa Aulov and nearly two dozen others joined LA fitness on Skillman Street.

"We had a heavy meal yesterday and it's a good time to come and just burn some calories," Auloy said. "It's a good time of the day, and it's a good beginning for the New Year."

Losing weight and getting fit is one of the most popular resolutions year after year -- but it's also one of the most often broken.

"Just set short-term goals and make sure that ... you don't have the expectations of making instant results," said Elizabeth Spence, Gold-s Gym personal trainer.

"Most people set their expectations too high at first, but if you set small goals and reach those goals first, you'll be more likely to continue," she said.

Landin said he knows it will take time but has a simple goal.

"I like to eat, so I'll be happy with a four-pack," he said.

AA Flight Attendants Poised to Approve Merger Plan

advertisement

Just days after American Airlines' pilots signed off on a merger plan with US Airways, flight attendants appear poised to approve their own deal.

"A merger is the best thing for the company, the unions and the passengers," Association of Professional Flight Attendants president Laura Glading said late Tuesday. "It has to happen."

Glading said she would probably recommend that her union approve a "memorandum of understanding" soon. The deal is essentially an integration plan with their counterparts at US Airways.

A merger between the two carriers – which would create the world's largest airline -- appears more likely than ever, analysts say, even as other major obstacles remain.

"It's going to be extremely interesting," said airline analyst Denny Kelly. "The main reason there will be a merger is they have to merge. They don't have any choice. American is going to find it extremely difficult to compete with Delta and United."

Fort Worth-based American has been mired in bankruptcy for more than a year. Airline executives have said they are studying a merger with US Airways or possibly another airline. But it's unclear whether it would happen before or after the airline emerges from bankruptcy.

The board of directors of American's parent company, AMR Corp., is set to meet Jan. 9.

The Allied Pilots Association approved a merger deal on Saturday. Pilots at US Airways are expected to consider the proposal in the next few days.

Kelly said combining large workforces is always full of pitfalls.

""There are going to be people who aren't going to like it," he said.

Another question is: Who will control a combined airline?

Analysts say US Airways' CEO Doug Parker would likely take the reins if the deal goes through soon.

But American CEO Tom Horton's odds could go up if the process drags on.

"He wants to run the world's largest airline. And at the minimum, he probably wants to be the head of American if they can come out of bankruptcy alone, without the merger," Kelly said.

American issued a statement on Saturday saying it remains "actively engaged" in merger talks but stressed that no final decision has been made.

"We remain committed in our efforts to secure the best outcome for our financial stakeholders, our people and our customers," spokesman Mike Trevino said.

Daredevils Plunge Into Bone-Chilling Waters for a Good Cause

Daredevils Take the Polar Bear Plunge

Many local residents took part in a New Year s Day tradition today. They hit the beaches in the Jersey Shore for the annual polar bear plunges. NBC10 s Ted Greenberg has the details.

More Photos and Videos

The hundreds of participants in this year's Polar Bear Plunges weren't just dipping into the bone-chilling surf to seek some thrills. They were also doing it for a good cause.

For the annual New Year's Day event, brave souls charged into icy waters all across the United States — from the Jersey Shore and New York City's Coney Island to the less wintry beaches of Southern California.

But this year, the plunges held a special significance for hardy swimmers at New York and New Jersey beaches, many of them hard-hit by Superstorm Sandy last year, and many of the plunges raised money to help victims of the hurricane's devastation.

"This is something I've done a couple years anyway just for the sake of doing it," Thomas Pirrone of Sicklerville, N.J., told NBC 10 Philadelphia on the beach in Ocean City, N.J. "Why not do it for a good cause?"

Swimmers nationwide took to their nearest ocean, lake, river or even swimming pool Tuesday — some for charity, some still just for the sake of doing it.

Pittsburgh swimmers took to the Monongahela River, Cleveland residents jumped in 38-degree Lake Erie, and San Franciscans ran into the frigid Pacific Ocean, as did Californians in the warmer climes of La Jolla, NBC 7 San Diego reported.

In the Dallas suburb of Frisco, Texas, families supporting a scholarship fund made do with a swimming pool chilled with ice cubes, NBC 5 DFW reported.

Polar Bear club members and others were raising money for Sandy relief efforts at Coney Island in New York, according to NBC 4 New York. In Ocean City, members of the Wish Upon a Hero Foundation, which has provided assistance to South Jersey victims of Sandy, ran into the surf, too.

"They sent us clothes within a few days and made sure we got back on our feet," said Ken Murphy, a Superstorm Sandy victim.

Other charities were well-represented, too. In Atlantic City, close to 200 people sprinted into the water to help the AC Polar Bear Club raise more than $2,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America.

"It's more than I expected, it's absolutely terrific," said Dale Raesly of Levittown, N.J. "Everybody should come out here and support this cause!"

In Coney Island, the Ice Breakers tried to raise awareness of water pollution, and the Polar Bear Club in Brigantine, N.J., where many people were impacted by Sandy, supported Fisher House, which provides transportation and housing to the families of wounded military members.

"We might have lost our personal items and our personal things," said John Hand, a Brigantine plunge organizer. "But we still have our arms and legs. Right now what we're doing is for our soldiers, our men and women overseas."

The location for this year's plunge in Brigantine had to be changed, since the beach where they normally held the event doesn't exist anymore due to Sandy.

"From this storm, there's no seawall left," said Hand.

But the thrills and chills remained the same in the new location, providing a fun-filled kickoff to 2013 and hope for better things to come this year.

"It's got to be a better year," said Billy Bryan of Brigantine. "Let's hope so. For everybody."

Police in Flower Mound are searching for a gunman after a man was found shot in a car at a small shopping center Tuesday night.

Someone in the area of Flower Mound Road and Garden Ridge Road heard the gunshots at about 10:45 p.m. and called 911.

The victim was parked right outside of Donut Plaza. Officers discovered the victim's Mazda filled with bullet holes and the bleeding man sitting in the driver's seat.

Investigators said CareFlight airlifted the man, identified as 54-year-old Darnell Lamont White, to Methodist Hospital in Dallas.

White arrived at the hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police said it looks like the gunman fired several shots from the back driver's side of the car.

Officers said the man was shot at least twice, once in the head. He was not conscious but was breathing when he was rushed to the hospital. Police are waiting for an update on his condition.

Investigators said White worked at a Target store in Lewisville and was headed home to Justin when he stopped in Flower Mound. Police do not know why White was targeted and do not have any information about the person who pulled the trigger, but they do not believe the shooting was random.

Investigators do not believe the man has any connection to any of the businesses in the shopping center.

This is the first murder in Flower Mound since 2009, police said.

Dallas Sheriff's Deputies say a 24-year-old Dallas man shot himself after a chase that ended near a DART station Wednesday morning.

According to police, it started in Glenn Heights around 2:50 a.m. after they got a call about a possibly intoxicated driver along Interstate 35 near East Bear Creek Road. The man stopped, but when an officer approached his vehicle, took off, hitting the officer.

After an hour-long pursuit, the chase ended at W. Illinois Avenue and Pierce Street and the man exited his vehicle with two handguns. Police tried negotiating with the man, who at times, was holding one of the weapons to his head.

At about 5:45 a.m., police said the man shot himself in a nearby field. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

That officer was taken to the hospital with a head injury, where he was treated and released. There were no other injuries reported in connection with the chase and shooting.

The nearby Westmoreland DART station was closed for some time while police talked with the man. Police continue investigating, but have since reopened the Westmoreland DART station.

The man's name has not yet been released.

MacArthur High School alumni are rallying around a former teacher struggling with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Johnny Heard, who taught journalism at the Irving high school in the 1970s and 1980s, is in hospice care.

His former students are rallying around him and planning a big birthday bash for this weekend.

Former student Mark Ridlen launched a Facebook page in October, Heard's Herd, to keep his high school friends updated on their former teacher's health. More than 200 joined, almost overnight, he said.

Ridlen was Heard's student for three years in the '70s.

"He was more to me the eccentric and intellectual uncle I never had," he said.

"He was by far the best of any journalism class I ever had in any college," said Cindy Coleman, who learned about Heard's health through Ridlen.

Since hearing the news, Coleman, who lives in Grapevine, regularly goes to the hospice location in Hurst.

"A lot of times, he feels like he doesn't have a family and I keep telling him, 'That's not true. You do. All your friends are your family,'" she said.

Ridlen is organizing a birthday party for Heard on Sunday. He said he hopes his former teacher can be healthy enough a bit longer to enjoy his special day one more time.

"With him these days, it's just hour-to-hour and day-to-day," he said. "I went out there and visited him a few days before Christmas, and I dressed up as Santa Clause and had some people come out, and I don't even know if he remembers that because he's kind of in and out."

Bartenders Against Drunk Driving

Bartenders Against Drunk Driving will be wearing t-shirts to remind patrons to have a plan to get home safe after partying on New Year's Eve.

More Photos and Videos

A New Year's Eve program intended to keep you from getting behind the wheel is starting behind the bar.

Carol Wooden and her husband began a local chapter of Bartenders Against Drunk Driving in 2010 after setting up their JC Bartending Academy in Plano.

"We're OK with drinking," she said. "We're OK with having fun. It's just making sure that people are responsible and the afterthought of ensuring they have the safe ride home is not an afterthought."

This year, the Woodens have handed out T-shirts to bartenders at 20 bars and restaurants in North Dallas and Collin County. The New Year's Eve shirts have 1-800-TAXI-CAB printed on the back as a subtle reminder to patrons about how to get home safely.

"As the bartender turns around to make the drink, it might just trigger in their mind, 'Hey, I need to make sure I have a ride home," Wooden said.

BADD has also passed out hundreds of "safe cards" that also bear the number for the taxi conglomerate, a partnership between dispatches that sends out the closest taxicab so callers aren't kept waiting.

Plano police are also using an attention-grabbing technique this season.

The weekend before New Year's, the department rolled out a Choose Your Ride campaign, featuring a Plano police cruiser wrapped in taxicab yellow on its back half.

"We want to grab people's attention," Plano police spokesman Officer David Tilley. "Maybe [if] they've had a little too much to drink, they'll see this and it will be a reminder."

The Choose Your Ride car will likely be posted around The Shops at Legacy in Plano for New Year's Eve.

Garland firefighters are working around the clock to raise money for one of their own who was injured in a car crash that may have left him paralyzed for life.

Devon Colbert, 28, may not walk again after a car crashed into his vehicle on Dec. 17 in Rockwall. His 2-year-old son was also strapped into the car but was not hurt.

Emily Colbert watched her husband follow his lifelong passion to become a firefighter, only to have the unexpected setback thrown in their path.

"It breaks my heart," she said. "It breaks my heart, because I know how hard he worked to get where he is. I know how hard we've worked as a family to get where he is."

The Garland Fire Department has been working to raise money for her and their two young boys, covering shifts and making 24-hour visiting rounds at the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation.

"If it wasn't for our faith, we would be on the ground," Emily Colbert said. "If it wasn't for our extended fire family and family coming and picking us up, I don't know how we would be making it."

"He would do the same for me in a heartbeat," said Ross Dyer, who filled in for Colbert on his New Year's Eve shift. "He would do the same for anybody in this department."

Devon Colbert has been working at the Garland Fire Station No. 7 for the past year, but it took him nearly seven years just to get a job in the department. Before, he was a volunteer with the Rockwall Fire Department.

"He is so thankful to have this job," firefighter Jerry Click said. "He gets here almost two hours early before his shift starts, and he's the last one to leave. He works nonstop."

Emily and Devon Colbert are holding onto their hope that one day he'll be back where he always wanted to be.

"He will walk again," Emily Colbert said. "I have to believe that; that's what I'm holding onto in my heart."

Your Complete Guide to Black Monday

advertisement

There are happier ways to start a new year than finding out you're unemployed, but the NFL schedule makes no concessions for the regular calender.

The regular season ended on Sunday, which means that NFL teams spent Monday firing underperforming coaches and general managers. They call the day Black Monday and, given the fact that it is New Year's Eve, this one is a little bit blacker than most.

We'll run through all the major changes here so that you can be sure to know which teams have decided to move in a different direction. We'll do it alphabetically, which means we start out in the desert.

Arizona Cardinals: Ken Whisenhunt is the most successful coach the Cardinals have ever known, but that wasn't enough to save him after a season that saw the team start four different quarterbacks who were all guilty of being nowhere near good enough to be starters in the NFL. General manager Rod Graves also got the axe as as a result of being the man who handed Whisenhunt those quarterbacks in the first place.

Buffalo Bills: The Bills gave Chan Gailey his walking papers after a third straight season of double digit losses, a move that's been met with happiness from Bills fans tired of watching Gailey muck around with an offense that needed a lot more C.J. Spiller. Surprisingly, general manager Buddy Nix did not get fired on Monday despite giving Ryan Fitzpatrick one of the worst contract extensions in recent memory.

Chicago Bears: Lovie Smith is done after nine years as the Bears' head coach, a move that seemed inevitable after they missed the playoffs for the fifth time in the last six seasons. Bears players have not reacted well to the move, blaming it on "false fans" and the media instead of their own underachieving.

Cleveland Browns: The writing was on the wall when the team was sold to Jimmy Haslam earlier this year and it came to pass on Sunday. Coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert are looking for new jobs, continuing the disappointing saga that is the Browns franchise since their re-entry to the league in 1999.

Jacksonville Jaguars: General manager Gene Smith was axed after years of diminishing returns, including a bust of a first-round pick in quarterback Blaine Gabbert. Head coach Mike Mularkey hasn't been fired, but could get snipped once they have a new G.M.

Kansas City Chiefs: General manager Scott Pioli somehow survived a 2-14 season while coach Romeo Crennel was told not to bother coming in for the rest of his life. Crennel is one of the best defensive coaches in the game, but he's now failed miserably twice as a head coach.

New York Jets: Rex Ryan survives to bloviate again while general manager Mike Tannenbaum couldn't do the same after a litany of failures that could be boiled down to a three-way quarterback battle between Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow and Greg McElroy. Whoever gets the job next would be advised to try finding one guy who doesn't stink.

Philadelphia Eagles: Andy Reid's 14-year run as the leader of the Eagles ended as expected on Monday. Reid had a terrific run as the team's coach, something that might get lost in the wake of his miserable final year on the job.

San Diego Chargers: When the season started, it seemed clear that a losing year for the Chargers would cost coach Norv Turner and G.M. A.J. Smith their jobs. The Chargers had a losing year and both guys are now looking for work.

A Dallas firefighter was hurt while responding to an accident on Northbound U.S. 75 New Year's Day morning. Crews tell NBC5 that firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Dallas Fire-Rescue said they had been called out to a crash on U.S. 75 and had parked the ladder truck in a blocking position for safety. A driver of a pickup truck smashed into the side of the fire truck.

One person from the original wreck also had to be taken to the hospital.

Police shutdown U.S. 75 northbound for several hours causing major traffic backup and frustrating many New Years Eve revelers trying to head home.

As crews had been working on the wrecks on U.S. 75, another 3-car crash happened on the frontage road at Forest Lane. Hazmat crews had to clean up some fuel spilled in that wreck.

One lane of traffic could get by the crash involving the fire truck, but drivers had to exit at Coit Road.

Oklahoma State and Purdue play in the inaugural Heart of Dallas Bowl on Tuesday. It will be the third consecutive New Year's Day game played in the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium since the namesake game moved to Cowboys Stadium.

The 2013 game features a new title sponsor, the Heart of Dallas, a new non-profit organization that works with Dallas charities.

"We're not only getting the chance to tell the city of Dallas about what we're doing here in the community but we get to tell the whole country and the world that Dallas has a heart," said Heart Dallas board member Kern Egan. "We're about our people and we're about giving back and that's what we're going to use this game for."

The proceeds from Tuesday's game will benefit charities working to end homelessness in Dallas including the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance.

"A lot of bowl games, don't get this opportunity to help others and it's a great thing that we're helping," said Oklahoma State lineman Lane Taylor.
