For retailers in McKinney's Historic Square, the 32nd annual "Dickens of a Christmas" festival is an early start to Small Business Saturday.

"It's automatic traffic for us - it's automatic sales," said Kendi Skeen, owner of boutique Bloom. "It wouldn't be this busy on a Friday afternoon if it weren't for Dickens."

Around the corner, Stephanie Farrar, who's been in business in the square for two years as "The Canine Cookie Company", agreed.

"It is probably the biggest festival for the year for us, so we really do depend on it," she said.

Both businesses will be participating in Small Business Saturday, a relatively new promotion nationwide to remind shoppers to spend money locally after Black Friday, when much of the holiday budget goes to "big box" chain stores.

"It gets people out shopping locally, which is great for the economy, because we all hire local people to help us," said Ferrar, who noted on Friday, the foot traffic in and out of her store was "probably at ten times our usual volume".

"For us, it's huge," said Skeen. "The traffic counts so much more."

The Small Business Saturday effort started in 2010 and quickly spread.

According to survey cited by American Express, which promotes the motto "Shop Small", more than 100 million people spent money locally on Small Business Saturday last year.

Walmart Workers Protest on Black Friday

advertisement

Walmart workers and their supporters staged Black Friday demonstrations at five North Texas stores.

The workers claim pay and benefits are too low and employees who complain suffer retaliation.

They traveled between stores by bus over a period of several hours Friday morning.

"We're striking to stop the retaliation that Walmart gives associates. We want to get respect from the company," employee Jose Mata said.

Two bus-loads met at the Lancaster Walmart on I-35E at Belt Line Road to bring together a gathering of around two-dozen protestors.

"Things were really good when Sam Walton was alive, but since his passing, Walmart has fallen so far and we want to change that," employee Billy Lyons said.

An SMU Theology professor led the group in prayer and then a handful of workers delivered a letter of grievances to several Walmart managers who were watching in the parking lot.

Faced with a heavy show of police presence, the demonstrators turned and left and did not try to enter the store.

The workers were told there would be no retaliation for their protest if they showed up for their regular work shifts.

"These are the working poor. These are people who don't have any other support, who don't get the benefits, who nobody really pays attention to," said Professor Joerg Rieger with the SMU Perkins School of Theology.

Group supporter Leslie Harris said people who shop at Walmart should demand better treatment for workers.

"I also think the Walton family could share more. They have obscene wealth as compared to their employees," she said.

The demonstrations were planned to be walk-outs of employees sponsored by a group called "Organization United for Respect" or "OUR Walmart."

The United Food and Commercial Workers union claimed on its website that 1000 demonstrations were planned in 100 cities and 46 states.

Prepared statements from Walmart Headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas did not address specific complains from the workers but did say the UFCW claims were grossly exaggerated.

The company said no more than 50 employees participated in the demonstrations nationwide and the number of employees missing a scheduled shift was no more than last year.

The statement from David Tovar, Vice President of Corporate Communications also said:
"It was proven last night – and again today – that the OUR Walmart group doesn't speak for the 1.3 million Walmart associates. We had our best Black Friday ever and OUR Walmart was unable to recruit more than a small number of associates to participate in these made for TV events. Press reports are now exposing what we have said all along – the large majority of protesters aren't even Walmart workers."

The first day of the holiday shopping season will be the last full day of post-Superstorm Sandy gasoline rationing in New York City.

The odd-even license plate system is set to end at 6 a.m. Saturday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a news release Friday confirming the restriction would expire.

He says more than 85 percent of gas stations in the city are now running, compared with 25 percent two weeks ago.

Under the rationing rules, any given car could be gassed up every other day.

The system went into effect in the city Nov. 9, after damage to gas stations and fuel distribution networks led to hourslong lines and fuel shortages.

Similar rationing has ended in New Jersey and on Long Island.

Black Friday Means Football in Mesquite

On this Black Friday, not everyone is at the mall shopping.

In Mesquite, hundreds of people are sure spending money for several big high school football games, including the Poteet High School and Dallas Lincoln game.

If there's two things North Texans love, it's football and family.

"Football is everything," said Poteet supporter Melissa Shields. "It promotes character in our boys and we wouldn't have it any other way."

The City of Mesquite is hosting several playoff games this season, and while some are spending money on the biggest shopping day of the year, others are leaving it in Mesquite.

Business owner James Donahoe says playoffs mean a payoff.

"It really boosts our business back at Cici's, we'll have huge turnover from all the athletes that will show up and the teams show up by the hundreds and it turns out to be a great profitable day for us," said Donahoe.

At Memorial Stadium, two matches kicked off Friday, including Poteet High School and Lincoln High School. The stadium has a seating capacity of more than 20,000 people.

For Poteet, making it to the playoffs is a big score, since they didn't make it last year and principal Karyn Cummings said in the 2008 and 2009 season, the team only won two games

"It's amazing what that does for the climate of the school and students do better in school, in their classes and they're behavior is better all the way around when there's a winning athletic program," said Cummings.

Dallas Lincoln is coming from a near perfect football season.

"It means everything," said Lincoln Supporter Ricky Williams. "It's a family tradition."

Win or lose, families and fans have undying support, while enjoying another fall Texas tradition.

Like so many shoppers this holiday season, Amanda Nutter is always looking for a deal -- even if it's dealing with the long lines and Black Friday chaos at the big-box stores.

After the morning madness Nutter visited GW Boutique, one of the high-end Goodwill stores.

"There were people killing each other the last cabbage patch kid or the Barbie doll and this is so much more calm," Nutter said.

Nineteen Goodwill stores across the Metroplex held their own Black Friday sale with all items at the stores available for 50-percent off.

"We're a retailer just like everybody else, we offer already great prices, but we thought that this could be another way to offer for better prices," Kristen Bostick, a Goodwill spokesperson said.

Stephanie Sisk, a cashier who's been busy behind the register, says customers appreciate the bargain.

"Half of them didn't even know about it," Sisk said.

The revenue generated will provide funding for job training and placement programs for people with disabilities or who are unemployed.

"It's just something that were just joining in on the Black Friday craze, it something else we can give back to the community," Bostick said.

This is Goodwill's second year to host the sale and the company has plans to do the same next year.

Early Bird Shoppers Claim Black Friday Deals

Those up early enough for the start of Black Friday sales -- some as early as Midnight -- say they snagged deals during their early morning shopping.

Black Friday Begins in DFW

At the same shopping center in North Dallas, Toys R Us shoppers start their Black Friday spending at 8pm on Thanksgiving while Best Buy customers must wait.

Who needs sleep when you can practically hear the sales calling from your nearby shopping mall?

That's the question tens of thousands of North Texas Black Friday shoppers are asking themselves, with the resounding answer of "Not me!"

"I mean, I ain't got nothing else to do.  I got four children and they said, 'Mom, it's the Black Friday.'  Mom is here!" said Tish Alexander of Fort Worth, who spent all night at the North East Mall in Hurst.

The North East Mall, like many other stores and shopping centers in the Metroplex, opened its doors at midnight.  And like a retail "Field of Dreams" --  if you open it, shoppers will come.

"The mall's not the first stop," said Gerald Jordan of Colleyville, his two kids in tow.  "[We] started with breakfast and it's progressively... we went from the mall to Kohl's to a lot of places."

Bargain hunting is the primary reason people told NBC 5 they came out in the middle of the night.

"Scarf, pants, sweater - everything, the entire outfit, for under $35!" one shopper exclaimed.  She, like so many others, has turned the overnight ritual into a holiday tradition -- zipping from store to store with friends and shopping bags in tow.

Over at the Galleria in Dallas, crowds were picking up Friday evening, looking even busier than Friday afternoon. Three of the parking garages were at capacity with the rest of the spaces at 95-percent capacity around 5 p.m.

The constant flow of people coming in and out are helping customers find places to park.

People took advantage of items discounted 60 to 70-percent off in some stores.  Many retailers are also offering gift cards for customers who spend a certain amount in their stores.

Customers that spoke with NBC 5 said they're pretty happy with the bargains.

"A lot of great deals," says shopper Sean Jones of Dallas.  "I'm probably spending a little less per item (than last year) but maybe spending near the same amount because I'm buying more."

Small business owners are hoping you don't forget the little guy this weekend.

After shoppers flock to the mall and large retail chains on Black Friday, many are hoping customers participate in "Small Business Saturday."

"In order to compete with the big boys," said Suzanne Roberts, who owns her own store, Suzanne Roberts Inc., in Snider Plaza in University Park.

Roberts said she can't offer the big discounts like major stores, but to lure customers into the store, she is offering something.

"Our special is nothing like theirs. At 20% off, that's a big special for us," Roberts said.

Vickie Brown, who owns Love Tennis, also in Snider Plaza, is doing the same thing.

"Right now, we are having a sale. We moved it up just about three weeks. We usually do it just before Christmas, but we thought for Small Business Saturday we were going to offer 75-percent off of past seasons of Stella McCartney and Adidas is 30-percent off," Brown said.

Both women said it's important for shoppers to remember small businesses in order to support the local economy.

They also point out customers won't have to deal with the hassle of long lines and crowded aisles.

"It's so intimate with the customer and we have our clientele base where we get to know the customers one-on-one. So it's not just a come in and shop. We really get to know you," Brown said.

Sundance Square has the Christmas Spirit.

On Friday, Sundance Square hosted the Fort Worth Parade of Lights. Thousands of people crowded the streets to get a look at more than 100 floats decorated with lights.

But the big draw was a big tree. Santa Claus came into town to help light up a 55-foot blue spruce tree from Michigan decorated with ornaments.

Based on reaction from kids in the crowd, the event was a hit.

"We get to see the tree light up, and we get to see, we get to see Santa!" said an excited Kaila Delane of Irving. "It's my first time, but I kind of like it. It's like New York."

Hundreds of people waited in line to pose for a picture with Santa and the tree. Pictures are $7 and benefit charity.

Mass. Gas Explosion Injures 18, Levels Strip Club

advertisement

A natural gas explosion in one of New England's biggest cities on Friday destroyed a building, one housing a strip club, and damaged others beyond repair but didn't kill anyone, authorities said.

"This is a miracle on Worthington Street that no one was killed," Lt. Gov. Tim Murray said at a press conference.

Firefighters, police officers and gas company workers in the area because of an earlier gas leak were among more than a dozen injured people, authorities said.

The explosion in a downtown area of Springfield, 90 miles west of Boston, blew out all windows in a three-block radius, leaving three more buildings irreparably damaged and prompting emergency workers to evacuate a six-story apartment building that was buckling.

Police Sgt. John Delaney marveled at the destruction at the blast's epicenter, where a multistory building was leveled.

"It looks like there was a missile strike here," he said.

Officials at two nearby hospitals said a total of 18 victims were transported with injuries but none was critical.

Firefighters responded to the scene at 4:20 p.m. and were investigating the gas leak when the blast happened shortly after 5 p.m. The cause of the explosion hadn't been identified but was under investigation, they said.

Springfield, which has about 150,000 residents, is the largest city in western Massachusetts. It's known as the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame, which is not in the vicinity of the blast.

The explosion, in an area of downtown Springfield with commercial properties and residences, destroyed a building that housed a Scores Gentlemen's Club.

Area resident Wayne Davis said he felt his apartment building shake a block away.

"I was laying down in bed, and I started feeling the building shaking and creaking," he said.

The Navy veteran said the boom from the explosion was louder than anything he'd ever heard, including the sound of a jet landing on an aircraft carrier.

The blast was so loud it was heard for miles around. Video from WWLP-TV showed the moment of the explosion, with smoke billowing into the air above the neighborhood.

Interstate 10 near Beaumont re-opened Thursday evening, hours after a massive crash involving as many as 100 vehicles left two people dead and up to 120 injured.

KPRC-TV in Houston reported two people from Pearland, near Houston were killed in the pile-up.  Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis said those victims were in an SUV, but declined to provide details.

The crash took place in extremely dense fog shortly before 9 a.m. along a two-mile stretch of road between Taylor's Bayou and Hampshire Road, NBC News reported.

Earlier reports suggested that between 50 and 150 vehicles may have been involved in the crash, but those estimates have been updated to 100.

Initially dozens of people were also reported injured, now that number has grown to as many as 120 with 51 of those injuries requiring hospitalization -- eight of the people are considered critical.

President Bush Turnpike May Boost Holiday Sales

advertisement

This Black Friday, retailers in the eastern part of the Metroplex are gearing up for the first full holiday shopping season since the President George Bush Turnpike Eastern Extension opened last year.

It's the first full holiday shopping season for the Firewheel Town Center and shopping area since the turnpike opened only a few days before Christmas 2011. The opening has given surrounding areas a development momentum they haven't seen for years.

Normally Black Friday shoppers dread the crowds coming, but on the busiest shopping day of the year more people will have better access to the dealsc with the Eastern Extension.

Koltain Leszcynski has been camping out for days.

"There's a lot of people here since the Bush Turnpike opened, there's more traffic, it's easier to get here for more people," said Leszcynski.

Retailers said the turnpike's impact has been huge.

"We've definitely seen sales and traffic increase over the past few months. Our retailers are reporting that for the first time they've seen shoppers from the Mesquite area, Rockwall, Rowlett," said director of marketing Glenda Garcia. "Even Murphy, Wylie, Sachse, so it's really connected the Eastern half of the Dallas Metroplex that never had easy access to the property."

Sabina Virk drove from Murphy to take advantage of open stores.

"It has really helped people connect and come here more. I have never seen so many crowds here, ever since the George Bush Turnpike got built, people are pouring from all directions," said Virk.

The turnpike has also spurred more development at the mall, Firewheel is about to double the number of apartments at the town center to 600, and add more stores.

Residents said it's a way to keep their tax dollars local.

"It was tough because the gas to get to Plano or Town East was pretty expensive," added Leszcynski.

"The people of Murphy, Garland, Sachse would have to travel 10, 15, 20 minutes to access the nearest shopping center, they don't have to do that anymore," said Garcia.

On Thanksgiving morning in Frisco, the city's relatively new North Texas Turkey Trot tradition was bursting at its seams.

"This year, we're topping off at 4,000 [runners]," said Cacy Saffery, a board member of The Miracle League of Frisco.

The Miracle League is responsible for seven sports teams, supporting school-aged athletes with special needs.

Before the run last year, Saffery said he and other organizers were hoping for maybe 1,000 participants.

They ended up with about 1,800, never imagining they'd more than double that number the following holiday.

"We love our family and we wanted to do something fun," said runner Brandy Couchot, running with her cousin Lauren and much of the extended family, all dressed up as turkeys and other festive Thanksgiving characters.

The first run of the morning, however, focused on The Miracle League's athletes.

"We hope this will be a family anchor throughout our community," Saffery said.

"There's a void, and we want to fill that void. We want it to be the standard and not the exception."

The Miracle League of Frisco offers opportunities for kids to play basketball, soccer, baseball, bowling, track and more.

North Texas firefighters were busy with at least half a dozen fires on Thanksgiving Day, many of which started while people were cooking for Thanksgiving.

One of the largest fires occurred at about 6 a.m. in the 400-block of Sunnyside Avenue in Cockrell Hill. The fire broke out in a vacant house, then spread to the house next door where an elderly couple had moved in last May.

Neighbors worried it would spread to other homes.

"That fire was so intense and hot, we could feel it from the inside of our house," neighbor Ray Resendez said.

Neighbors rescued the elderly couple from their burning home as their frightened relatives arrived and saw the fire trucks.

"They thought they could have perished in the fire.  They didn't know if they were dead or alive," said neighbor Priscilla Mendoza Barrientos.

Lucino Hernandez, 81 and his wife Isabel, 77, were planning to host their first Thanksgiving in the house for family.

Friends and neighbors helped move the gathering to another relative's house where the couple received shelter.

Otilia Hernandez, who lives across the street, said the vacant house where the fire started had a troubled history.

"Back when we were teenagers, two brothers were shot in the front," Hernandez said.

No one was seriously injured in any of the fires.

Skipping Thanksgiving Tradition For Sales

Many North Texans take the feast on the road as they wait for stores to open for Black Friday weekend.

More Photos and Videos

On Thanksgiving evening, it was the tale of two stores in North Dallas. A rush of shoppers entered Toys 'R Us at 8:00 p.m. The Central Expressway and Park Lane location was filled with shoppers. Meanwhile, nearby Best Buy customers waited for a midnight opening.

For the Toys 'R Us shoppers, it was all about saving money. Neisha Moore is the mother of a 3-year-old girl.

"I'm buying for her, her friends, family, people," Moore said. "I have a tree angel to shop for [too]."

It's also about saving money. "Oh, it saves a lot of money," said shopper Leslie Toledo. "Like a few 100 dollars."

The economy was also worth camping outside Best Buy for shoppers like Maria Pena.

"Just on the TV, you're saving more than half of it," Pena said. "So it's affordable right now even if you have to be out here two days to get it."

David Diamondson of Grand Prairie made sure to have his turkey, and his deal too.

"We've got a little cornbread, stuffing, potato salad and turkey," he showed us his meal. He also had a good reason to be waiting in line for 50-inch flat screen TV.

"I don't have one. I got an old fashioned TV and I want a flat screen," Diamondson said.

His relative brought food for the family, and she too, was waiting in line.

Mary Warren also had her reasons for camping out in front of Best Buy.

"We're here because our house was burglarized last week, took our 52-inch screen TV and my laptop and just about everything and made a mess and insurance won't really cover that much," Warren said.

Regardless of their reasoning, these folks decided to have their Black Friday deals, and their Thanksgiving dinner, too.

Will it become a tradition? Diamondson doesn't think so. He says once he has the flat screens, "I'll have everyone at my house next year."

Remembering JFK on 49th Anniversary

advertisement

Hundreds of people spent part of their Thanksgiving holiday at Dealey Plaza to remember the death of president John F. Kennedy, which occurred 49 years ago Thursday.

At the time, Dallas-resident Mark Pittard and his brother, Bruce, were in elementary school. Despite how young they were, Pittard clearly remembers that day in November of 1963.

"It's something I'll never forget. I'll never forget how my dad was crying when he heard the news, my mother was upset," Pittard said.

Now, nearly 50 years later, a makeshift tribute was made at the site of the assassination.  Throughout the day, residents and tourists visited Dealey plaza—some to snap photographs, others to hear conspiracy buffs and their theories.

Fraser Benzal is in town from Chicago for the Thanksgiving holiday. She brought her 13-year-old daughter, Grace, to see the infamous site.

"It's important for them to see things that happened in the past so they can relate to them in the future," Benzal said.

Across the street at the Sixth Floor Museum, preparations are already under way for next year's milestone anniversary.

"The 50th [anniversary] is very significant, where we will have some time over the next year to pause, reflect and remember the life and legacy of president Kennedy,"  sadi Nicola Longford, executive director of The Sixth Floor Museum.

The museum, along with the Bush Presidential Library and SMU, will produce special programs throughout the year involving the life and presidency of JFK.

Earlier this week, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings announced the plans for a major public memorial ceremony that will include a moment of silence. Two weeks ago, across the street from the hotel where Kennedy spoke to thousands on the morning of Nov. 22, the city of Fort Worth opened a new memorial to the fallen leader.

1 Dead After Dive Boat Capsizes in Fla.: Authorities

One person has died and another is in critical condition after a rogue wave caused a commercial dive boat to capsize Thursday near Miami, authorities said.

The Thanksgiving day incident happened in Pompano Beach, Fla., at the Hillsborough Inlet as the boat was returning from a dive trip, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said the captain of the 45-foot Coral Princess catamaran did everything he could to keep the boat upright after a wave hit it from behind.

"Apparently the captain was just trying to come through some rough waters," said BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella. "It was windy, there were waves rolling in, there was a rogue wave that hit the back of the boat and capsized the boat sending everyone into the water."

Laminated Windows Being Installed in Vehicles Prevents Escape in Emergencies

A woman in her 50s, who was transported to Broward Health North, has died, authorities said. Although her cause of death is unknown, BSO said it appears that the woman may have drowned.

"At least one person was caught underneath, another person was injured," Moschella told NBC 6 South Florida.

Three others were also taken to the hospital but are in good condition, hospital staff said.

"But during the rescue it got pretty dicey and scary because we were told there were more people, there may be people missing, so all of these agencies began searching for people to make sure we had everyone," Sandra King, spokeswoman for Pompano Fire, told NBC 6 South Florida.

She said the inlet is tough to negotiate.

"They say it turns into a wash basin," she said. "It's a rough inlet."

BSO said homicide investigators will investigate the incident.

"Right now it looks like this is a tragic accident," she said. "What started out as a gorgeous day on the water for 23 people ended in tragedy."

The boat's passengers consisted of two crew members and 21 divers.

For McKinney business owner Mark Cobb, it was a personal connection to the family of Alicia Moore that prompted him to action.

"Alicia Moore's Aunt Jessica works for me," said Cobb, owner of Kids R Kids. "I just felt the need to help out and do something."

Earlier this month, 16-year-old Moore was reported missing, last seen getting off the school bus near her Greenville home.

Moore's body was later discovered in a trunk on the side of the highway in rural Van Zandt County. Police are still investigating, but are remaining tight lipped.

"It is frustrating, that it's been two or three weeks and we haven't heard anything," said Cobb.

Over the past few weeks, Cobb has led a fundraising campaign, starting both a reward fund for information in Moore's death and a relief fund to help the teen's family.

By Wednesday afternoon, thanks to Cobb's own contribution, money given by his Kids R Kids parents and staff, and donations by his former boss at Greenville Chrysler and another Plano businessman, the reward fund had grown to $25,000.

"[It's] is a lot of money and it might get that right person to come forward and say what they saw," he said.

Cobb added the relief fund contains about $4,000.

The group of business owners has also rallied support for two billboards bearing Moore's picture and a plea for information, which will go up after Thanksgiving.

One will sit on Highway 380 in McKinney and the other outside of Greenville.

Cobb says the cost of the billboard rental was also donated.

Those who would like to donate to either fund can contact the West McKinney Kids R Kids location to speak with Mark Cobb.

Steve Jobs Burglar Says "Sorry" to Mrs. Jobs

Man Arrested for Robbing Steve Jobs' Home

Several computers and personal items worth more than $60,000 were stolen from the Northern California home of the late Steve Jobs in what authorities insist was a run of the mill burglary.

More Photos and Videos

The man charged with stealing iPads, iPods, a soda maker, a blender, a Prada bag and more than $50,000 of jewelry from the Palo Alto home of the late Apple founder Steve Jobs entered a no contest plea on Wednesday.

Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Tom Flattery said that Kariem McFarlin, 35, of Alameda now stands convicted of eight counts of residential burglary and one count of possessing stolen property. He could face up to seven years and eight months in prison when he is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 17.

"The Steve Jobs part got the attention of the media," Flattery said. "But from our standpoint, we treated it like any other burglary."

Prosecutors said that from at least March 2011 to July, McFarlin targeted homes in affluent Bay Area neighborhoods that appeared empty while under construction or being remodeled.

McFarlin was arrested shortly after Jobs' home on Waverly Street was burglarized on July 17. Investigators tracked him down through the stolen devices. He had confessed upon his arrest, telling police that he was sorry and wanted to write a letter of apology to the Jobs family. He told authorities that he stole because he was desperate for money.

"He wrote a letter to Mrs. Jobs telling her he was sorry," McFarlin's defense attorney James Kellenberger of San Jose told NBC Bay Area. "He wished her her well and didn't mean to cause her difficulties. He took responsibility for his actions."

Kellenberger said that before McFarlin went into the Jobs home, he had no idea who he was robbing. But McFarlin quickly discovered where he was.

"When he left, he had Steve Jobs drivers license and his wallet," Kellenberger said.

While the Jobs home was by far the most high-profile, prosecutors said McFarlin admitted breaking into two homes in Marin County, four homes in San Francisco County and one home in Alameda County. He also admitted keeping hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of property from those burglaries at his home and storage locker in Alameda. Detectives from the regional REACT force pieced all the burglaries together, and Flattery said prosecutors from four counties worked together on the plea.

McFarlin's stolen haul included computers, jewelry, furniture and a solid silver bar.

Jobs was known for a modest personal life and had lived in the residential neighborhood. Authorities suspect his seven-bedroom house was targeted because it was undergoing renovation and may have appeared less secure. They believe the house was unoccupied at the time of the burglary.

McFarlin has been in custody for lack of $500,000 bail. He is a former San Jose State University student who graduated with a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology in 2004.

Balch Springs Man Beaten in His Home

advertisement

A Balch Springs man was severely beaten on Monday morning in his house.

Roberto Benevides said he heard the doorbell just before 6 a.m. and thought it was his son, who had just left for work. Instead, it was a man he didn't recognize, asking for someone named "Enrique."

"He was looking for an Enrique at this address and I said, 'I don't know any Enrique,'" he said.

But before the 63-year-old could close the door, the man pushed it open and rushed in -- along with two other men who were hiding out of sight.

"I tried to block my face, but he started hitting me, but then the other two came in, also hitting me in the face and the head," Benevides said.

The men knocked Benevides down, but not before breaking his nose and bruising five of his ribs. Benevides, a retired border patrol officer, said he tried to fight one of the men off until another man came over and threatened him.

"That's when I was trying to wrestle with the guy that was holding me down, when he told the other two, 'One of you help me. This viejo is trying to get up,'" Benevides said. "And that's when the guy
said, 'You try to get up and look at our face or what? You do that, and I'll pop you.'"

The threat convinced Benevides to stay on the floor.

The men took a 60-inch TV but never went upstairs, where Benevides' wife, son and two other family members were resting. Benevides said he is grateful that the men didn't decide to go upstairs.

"The material items, they can be replaced," he said. "But threatening my family or taking my son with them or my wife with them when they left -- there was no way I could stop them."

Balch Springs police released a composite sketch of the man who rang the doorbell. He's described as a young Hispanic man who is about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 150 to 160 pounds with light skin and light brown hair. Benevides said the man spoke Spanish.

Anyone who may have seen the men in the area are asked to call Balch Springs police and ask for Detective Bird at 972-557-6014.

There are less than three weeks left to adopt an angel from the Salvation Army Angel Tree.

The last day to sign-up is Dec. 9 and all gifts are due back on Dec. 10 at the very latest.

The Angel Tree will help more than 50,000 North Texans have a better and brighter holiday season this year.

Shopping for an adopted angel takes hardly any time either.

The Willmon family, visiting from their vacation home in Granbury, came to the Ridgmar Mall the day before Thanksgiving only with plans to adopt two angels from the Angel Tree.

"This is kind of the one thing we know we're making a difference for somebody," said Vonda Willmon "My kids have a great Christmas, everyone should have a good Christmas."

The Willmons signed up for a brother and sister and went off to buy shoes and some toys for the pair. It took them less than an hour to come back with all the angel gifts, knowing full well what it will mean to those they're helping.

"I'm a kindergarten teacher and I just see the needs of kids these days," said Meagan Willmon. "And just when they need shoes and stuff, you kind of feel like, shoes are something we take for granted, so when somebody needs something like that, especially a kid, you just feel like you really need to help them out."

Tips for a Safe Thanksgiving

Red Cross Instructor Wendelien Anderson spoke to NBC 7 about the disasters that can happen on Thanksgiving, how to prevent them and how to solve them if they happen.

Thanksgiving Holiday Travel Planner

Holiday travelers will face a bumpy ride as millions of Americans try to make it home for Thanksgiving.

More Photos and Videos

Two suspects have been arrested for killing a Florida family's pet turkey with an arrow days before Thanksgiving and carting him away for a holiday meal, authorities said.

Tom the Turkey's owners, Brian and Christa Caponi, of Gulf Breeze, were distraught over their pet's killing, but gathered enough clues that deputies swiftly arrested two suspects, according to a Santa Rosa sheriff's report.

The suspects, Joshua Warren Anderson, 19, and Jacob Hayden Provo, 18, were taken into custody Monday on charges that include burglary, trespassing, larceny and tormenting, depriving or mutilating an animal, the sheriff's report said.

Provo was the Caponi family's neighbor, the report said.

Tom was an eastern wild turkey whose estimated value was $300, NBC 6 South Florida reported. His killing caused Christa Caponi to become upset and start crying, the report said. "Christa told me that Tom was a very friendly pet who she loved," a sheriff's deputy wrote in his report. She said she also was scared that someone had entered her property, the report said.

The Caponi family had surveillance footage of two men entering their property about 10 p.m. Sunday, and one of the men taking away the turkey, the report said.

The Caponis told deputies that they also had seen Provo's white pickup parked near their home earlier in the week, even though "there would not have been a reason for him to be parked" there, the report said.

Deputies caught up with Provo, pulling him over in his pickup, the report said. When deputies asked Provo about the dead turkey in his vehicle, Provo said he had killed the turkey in Milton, a nearby city, the report said.

Provo later admitted to trespassing on the Caponi's property and killing Tom, the report said. Provo allegedly said that "he knew he should not have killed it and he should not have been there," the report said.

Riding in Provo's vehicle was Anderson, who "admitted to being with Provo while the turkey was killed and stolen," the report said.

Wife's Body Found Cooking in Suspect's Kitchen

A man neighbors said was known to stroll his southern California neighborhood dressed as a woman has been accused of cooking the flesh and bones of his 73-year-old murdered wife in their kitchen.

Anna Faris was found dead in her Oceanside home at 11:10 a.m. Friday after neighbors reported a foul odor coming from the residence, NBC 7 San Diego reported.

When officers went inside the home, they said they found the dismembered remains of the deceased woman cooking in pans in the couple's kitchen.

The heat was still on when authorities gain entrance into the residence, according to a complaint read by Katherine Flaherty, Deputy District Attorney with the County of San Diego.

Investigators also found Faris' head in the freezer and a work bench used for the mutilation in the bathroom. Near the work bench was a saw, a boning knife, other cutting instruments and pieces of bone in a plastic bag.

Flaherty said there was no evidence of cannibalism.

Detectives say they located the woman's husband, 68-year-old Frederick Hengl, in downtown Oceanside Friday. He voluntarily went with officers for questioning.

"After a brief conversation, police realized he was in the process of dismembering his wife's body," Flaherty said.

Prosecutors believe Hengl killed his wife on or between the dates of November 1 and 16.

In court on Wednesday, he pleaded not guilty to three charges filed against him, including first degree murder and committing an unlawful act with human remains. His bail was set at $5 million.

Police said they're familiar with the couple, but hadn't been to the residence recently on calls of domestic violence.

However neighbors told NBC 7 San Diego on Friday that the couple was known for some unusual tendencies.

"The husband is actually known for dressing up like a woman and walking around the neighborhood. It's just a permanent fixture, I guess. It doesn't freak us out anymore," said resident Jason Chandler. "[The wife] stands out here with a knife and she takes her clothes off out here on the corner."

"She always carried around a knife. Just really weird; hostile," recalled neighbor Eric Chavez.

The woman's name and official cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner and released at a later time.

Hengl was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on a first-degree murder charge.

A roller coaster that was swept right-side up into the Atlantic Ocean as Hurricane Sandy slammed the Jersey Shore may not be torn down, according to Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers.

But Mayor Akers, in an exclusive interview with NBC 4 New York, said he is working with the Coast Guard to see if it is stable enough to leave it alone.

If it is, Akers said it would make "a great tourist attraction."

Meanwhile, demolition crews have already finished removing all of the damaged boardwalk that was the heart and soul of the seaside resort, NBC 4 New York reported.

Businessmen like Mike Mergott of Mad Mike's Amusements said he is rebuilding because he is "one hundred percent sure" families want to come back.

And Jim Loundy, who owned several buildings wiped away by the surge is confident he won't see another storm like this for "another fifty or sixty years."

Mayor Akers said construction on a new boardwalk should begin in January, and be ready by Memorial Day.

Investigators from all levels of government continue to investigate a massive chemical fire that erupted in Garland on Friday.

Hazardous materials experts have gone back to the area near the Nexeo Solutions Plant. Crews have been cleaning up and trying to contain the mess for days.

On Tuesday, hazmat teams tackled contaminated soil and water runoff in a nearby creek.

"The top priority is try to contain the contaminated runoff," said Jason Chessher, the city's deputy director of health. "In this case, it happens to be Duck Creek, which is a major watershed in Garland that ultimately goes into the Trinity River."

City officials said workers found small amounts of methanol and motor oil but not enough to pose a public threat. Crews have dammed off the creek to contain the runoff.

An explosion rocked the chemical plant while crews unloaded methanol from a rail car into a tank on Friday afternoon.

No one was injured in the fire.

So far, Garland Fire marshals consider the fire to be an accident, but they said that Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigators talked with employees to see if any mistakes sparked the fire.

Randy Shaft, who works at a business across from the plant, said he remembers the explosion rocking the street.

"First, I thought it was a transformer, maybe bomb," he said. "It kind of shook the ground a little bit. It was loud."

Those nearest to the blaze said they would never forget it. Shaft said it was "pure chaos," with people running around in the middle of the street and trying to get in their cars and leave.

City officials said that southbound Shiloh Road would be closed until at least Wednesday, when they hope crews finish the cleanup.

Wireless Alerts to Reach More in DFW

advertisement

AT&T Inc. now says it is ready to deliver emergency alerts to its smartphone subscribers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, months after an NBC 5 investigation revealed that the Dallas-based company was not ready to implement the new government-sponsored system in its hometown market.

"I am happy to report that, since your last report, we have completed our wireless emergency alert deployment in the Dallas area and are working aggressively to complete other areas as quickly as possible," AT&T spokeswoman Alejandra Arango said.

Besides the DFW metropolitan area, AT&T is currently ready to deliver emergency alerts in just three other major cities -- New York, Washington, D.C., and Portland, Ore.

The NBC 5 Investigates team started looking into the Wireless Emergency Alert System after seeing announcements from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service this spring that claimed the system was ready to go nationwide.

The alert system is designed to send urgent weather warnings, Amber Alerts and presidential emergency alerts to smartphone users, using technology similar to text messages.

Under the original plan laid out by Congress, wireless carriers who agreed to take part in the program were supposed to have their end of the program up and running in April.

But this summer, NBC 5 Investigates found that AT&T was not able to deliver those alerts to its smartphone customers in the DFW area.

In June, AT&T told NBC 5 Investigates in a statement that: "We're not currently ready in Dallas, but we're working aggressively to get there."

FEMA, one of the agencies in charge of the system, told NBC 5 Investigates in June that it was ready to deliver on its part.

"The news release said that the FEMA portion of the system was established and running nationwide, and that's not a misstatement -- that's correct," Damon Penn, FEMA assistant administrator of national continuity programs, said in June. "Again, what part the carriers play and where the carriers are at in the process really depends on the carriers."

Wireless carriers Sprint Nextel Corp., Verizon Communications Inc. and T-Mobile USA Inc. told NBC 5 Investigates that they were ready to deliver alerts nationwide this summer to any smartphone capable of receiving them

Rep. Joe Barton, who was involved in creating the alert system, told NBC 5 Investigates that wireless companies would work quickly to close any gaps in coverage because customers would demand it.

"That's what will ultimately drive 100 percent implementation, is someone will say, 'Verizon has it all,' or, 'Sprint has it all,'" he said.

Smartphone users with phones capable of receiving WEA alerts whose wireless company participates in the program do not need to sign up for the alerts. The system works automatically; phone will receive an alert if it's turned on and is located in any city where an alert is issued.

AT&T offers 11 smartphones that can receive WEA alerts. The iPhone currently is not one of them. However, Sprint and Verizon say they can deliver alerts to their iPhone subscribers.

Smartphone customers can check with their wireless carrier for more information about service area coverage and whether their phone is WEA-ready.

A doctors group says women should be able to buy birth control over the counter and without a prescription.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that changing the way women get the pill could reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. Right now, about half of all U.S. pregnancies are unplanned.

If the recommendation is adopted, women could buy birth control pills alongside cough syrup and aspirin on pharmacy shelves.

In the past, some doctors have been resistant to the idea, citing concerns that women would skip their annual pap smear if they didn't need to refill a birth control prescription.

There are also concerns about some of the more serious side effects of birth control pills.

"I do think there needs to be a better option for people to get birth control, because people can't afford to go to the doctor and don't have time to go to doctor," said Dr. Linda Bernstein, a Fort Worth obstetrician-gynecologist.

"But there are certain people that definitely shouldn't be taking birth control pills, and those people we more need to worry about ... may not know they have a problem to start with," she said.

Women should not take the pill if they are pregnant or have certain conditions such as breast cancer or high blood pressure.

Government permission is still needed by any firm that would want to sell the pill without prescriptions.

Bernstein said she doesn't expect it to happen any time soon.

"I think that doctors, the government and drug companies need to do a lot more work before this is even possible," she said.

Museum Tower, Nasher Continue Feud Over Glare

Museum Tower officials say that a louver system similar to this one on a building in Germany is not a viable option.

advertisement

It appears that Museum Tower and the Nasher Sculpture Center are no closer to a solution for glare from the tower's glass.

The two are at odds over the sunlight that is reflected off the tower and into the sculpture center.

The Nasher has suggested that the tower install a louver system on the side of the 42-story building.

On Tuesday, Museum Tower released a study that says such a high-tech louver system is impractical and perhaps even dangerous. Tower officials said the louver slats would be too expensive to clean and maintain because they attract dirt and birds.

But Nasher leaders dismissed the study as a publicity stunt, and a meeting between the two sides set for Tuesday was canceled.

"The Nasher Sculpture Center remains committed to open communication in regard to a solution to the issues caused by the Museum Tower reflection," the Nasher said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. "However, it became apparent that today's hastily called meeting was not about solutions and is evidence of a continuing pattern of not working in good faith toward a resolution."

The Nasher director is also calling on Dallas residents to contact city leaders about the problem.

Hostess to Liquidate After Failed Mediation

Okla. Man Stockpiles Hostess Snacks

A Stillwater, Okla., man who collects Hostess snacks was on a Twinkie mission after hearing news of the company's shutdown.

More Photos and Videos

The Twinkie has lost its lifeline.

Hostess' stab at mediation with its bakers union has failed, the company said Tuesday. The Wall Street Journal reported that the company was planning to move ahead with plans to shut down all its plants and liquidate its assets.

That plan, which the company had announced days earlier in bankruptcy court, comes on the heels of a strike by the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco and Grain Millers Union and will leave more than 18,000 people out of work, a spokesman said Tuesday, according to the Journal.

A bankruptcy judge had asked the parties to head to mediation on Monday, but the president of the union had not been hopeful about its prospects and didn't attend the session. "I'm not too optimistic," he told the Journal on Tuesday.

Hostess will be back in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York on Wednesday to pursue its liquidation plan, after its earlier efforts to restructure while under Chapter 11 protection.

It declined to comment further Tuesday night, saying additional news would have to wait until its return to bankruptcy court at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

In the meantime, Hostess snacks of all shapes and sizes have sold out of North Texas stores.

When people found out that Hostess might be going out of business, customers snapped up Twinkies, Donettes and other baked goods. Boxes of Twinkies even showed up on auction site eBay for hundreds of dollars.

"I think it's very, very sad -- a tragedy," Corrie Gould said. "We're really oging to miss the Hostess brand, for sure."

"I'll have to see what other brands are out there," Ty Gould said. "They're not as good as Hostess, I can tell you that."

That kind of brand loyalty is very valuable, and business insiders say the company could sell off certain brands to buyer.

But a Stillwater, Okla., man who is tracking down every Hostess treat he can says it may not be the same.

"The name will live on, but they won't be the same," Jefferson Bryant said. "They'll never be the same. You can't ship from Mexico and expect them to be fresh."

NBC 5's Omar Villafranca contributed to this report.

Calif. Terror Plot Suspect Was Once Devoted Catholic

advertisement

One of three Southern California men accused of planning to join a mentor in Afghanistan to commit "violent jihad" had undergone a major transformation in the past two years, two people who knew him said.

Miguel Alejandro Santana Vidriales, 21, of Upland, had been a religious Catholic before turning to extremist Islamic views, according to a friend and a neighbor.

Along with Ralph Deleon, 23, of Ontario, and 21-year-old Arifeen David Gojali of Riverside, Santana is accused of plotting to join the Taliban and al-Qaida in Afghanistan. The three men – who were arrested in Chino Friday – were under the guidance of 34-year-old Sohiel Omar Kabir of Pomona, who was being detained in Afghanistan.

A complaint and affidavit that details the four men's plans – allegedly to target American soldiers and government facilities abroad – was unsealed late Monday. FBI officials discussed the case Tuesday.

Santana, who was born in Mexico and had a pending U.S. citizenship application, said that he had always looked for violence and sought to fit in with groups, according to the affidavit.

Santana allegedly said he hoped Islam would let him "fit in and actually be able to fight for something that's right."

A man who described himself as a friend of Santana's but did not want to be identified said that Santana had changed.

"He was a really good kid. He was like a brother to me," said the man, who had gone to Upland High School with Santana.

The friend said that Santana had in the past two years begun going to mosque three times per day and discussing extremist ideas. The friend said Santana had tried to convert him to Islam.

"I feel like maybe he started turning to the Muslim religion because those guys who were converting him were there for him," the friend said. "So he felt like 'Oh, well, these are my brothers,' when in reality they were just brainwashing him."

Another woman, Morgan Ivara, who identified herself as a friend also said Santana had begun to act differently within the past year or so.

"He'd say something about God and it would be awful," Ivara said.

He had been a "hard-core Catholic" previously, she said. He began to post "weird stuff" on Facebook, she said. Ivara stopped talking to Santana six months ago, she said.

Santana's apartment in Upland was raided by FBI agents Friday, according to nearby residents.

If convicted on all counts, he faces 15 years in prison.

Backlash After Woman Posts Mocking Photo from Arlington

advertisement

A Facebook firestorm has erupted over a photo of a visitor "clowning around" near the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery - and now there's an online campaign to cost that visitor her job.

Lindsey Stone, a visitor from Cape Cod, Mass., was on a work trip to the Washington area last month when she and a co-worker visited Arlington, NBC 4 Washington reported.

A sign at the Tomb of the Unknowns, among the most solemn places in the cemetery that calls itself "our Nation's most hallowed ground," asks for "Silence and Respect."

Stone's co-worker shot a photo of Stone next to that sign, her middle finger raised, and mugging as if she is shouting loudly.

Stone posted the photo to her Facebook page, and quickly received a flurry of furious reaction.

Stone has since removed the photo, but it already had been shared widely. A "Fire Lindsey Stone" Facebook page was quickly created, and now has more than 12,000 likes.

Stone would not agree to an interview. But her father told NBC 4 Washington that his daughter wants to apologize to anyone she may have offended.

She was clowning around and reacting to the sign, not the place, Stone's father told Gonzalez.
Stone had taken to Facebook in her own defense, saying she was "challenging authority in general. Much like the pic posted the night before, of me smoking right next to a no smoking sign."

"OBVIOUSLY we meant NO disrespect to people that serve or have served our country," she said, according to Gawker.

But that explanation does not seem to have quelled the anger of the "Fire Lindsey Stone" community, many of whom have posted photos of their loved ones who were killed in action and are buried at Arlington.

"However one feels about the war, these young men, fought, bled, endured things beyond 99 percent of the population's comprehension and gave their lives for a country they love…" reads part of one post.

"Having been to Arlington I can't imagine how any human being could be so disrespectful," reads another.

Stone and her co-worker are is now on unpaid leave from their jobs at LIFE, a non-profit organization that provides housing for people with disabilities in the Cape Cod area, and which paid for the trip.

The organization said it was conducting an investigation, and issued a statement:

"This photograph in no way reflects the opinions or values of the LIFE organization, which holds our nation's veterans in the highest regard."

The Old Guard, the U.S. Army Infantry regiment that is charged with guarding the Tomb of the Unknowns and is famous for weathering literal storms, seems prepared to weather a social media storm as well. They told Gonzalez that Stone is entitled to her freedom of speech.

And as for Stone's photo, the Old Guard said, it deserves no futher comment.

One person is dead and two people are in the hospital after a crash on state Highway 360 in Grand Prairie Wednesday morning.

Police responded to the wreck on the northbound lanes of 360 and Webb Lyn at about 3:10 a.m.

Drivers initially called police reporting debris in the roadway.

Authorities arrived to find an SUV off the road, upside down in a ditch. After searching the area, police discovered that two men were ejected from the vehicle.

Authorities believe the SUV had been speeding through a construction zone, lost control around a curve and hit cones, which caused the vehicle to flip over.

Officers say it appears the driver was the only person wearing a seatbelt. The driver, who lives in the area, walked away from the wreck toward his home, where officers were waiting for him. He was taken to the hospital.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, but another was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries.

Officers found an empty car seat and thoroughly searched the area, but don't believe a child had been thrown from the SUV at the time of the crash.

After the driver recovers from his injuries, he will need to answer to police for why he fled the crash.

FW Cracks Down on Illegal Downtown Parking

Holiday shoppers parking around downtown Fort Worth should check where and for how long they're parking.

The city has recently stepped up its parking enforcement efforts because of the safety and speed of deliveries.

Fort Worth said drivers parking in loading zones have increasingly forced delivery vehicles into traffic lanes or to park further away.

"Regular vehicles will park in a commercial loading zone and, then, when a commercial vehicle comes up, the loading zone is either stacked or full," said Peter Elliott, city parking manager.

It leads delivery trucks to double-park or park blocks away or in spots not designed for unloading and loading.

Elliott said it is first and foremost a safety issue that affects business -- both the delivery companies and businesses receiving deliveries.

"Fort Worth is now a top 20 city in the country," he said. "Clearly, the thing that is the life blood in the city is business, is commerce, so we have to do everything we can to facilitate that."

The city warned people with fliers for months that it would step up enforcement. And the city says its efforts are here to stay.

"At the end of the day, it's for the best," Elliot said.

A small group of city employees clad in neon yellow is now tasked with writing tickets and enforcing parking rules. And their jobs are to only do that.

"I think it's a good thing actually," Elliott said. "We're giving a better service to the public, tying parking enforcement to parking. That makes a lot of sense."

While the focus is on commercial loading zones, the enforcement effort also extends to all parking spots.

"The focus is always how can we get more people into the core of our downtown areas," Elliott said.

Jason Goran, of Dallas, made sure to feed the meter because he was warned about the enforcement patrols.

"[A] dude I am working with got a ticket last Thursday," he said. "Two tickets in, like -- I think he was here an hour and a half and he got two tickets, so you definitely see them patrolling."

Elliott said there was an outcry over the enforcement when it first started, but the city is working with to educate people about why it's happening. City workers left fliers about the enforcement since January and began enforcing parking rules within the last two months.

Fines for parking in a commercial spot range from $30 to $100.

Forget Black Friday -- the best deals for early-bird shoppers may come on "Gray Thursday."

This year, an unprecedented number of stores such as Target, Wal-Mart and Sears are opening their doors as early as 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. And select retailers at the Allen Premium Outlets are welcoming shoppers earlier than the mall's traditional midnight opening.

"Some stores are opening as early as nine," outlets spokeswoman Robyne Kintz said. "Driven by consumer demand and some of our shoppers, some of our stores are opening earlier and earlier."

She said the outlets would not maintain extended hours if it wasn't supported by customer demand.

"The shoppers, again, have made this a tradition," she said.

In 2011, Janet David, of Plano was lured to the midnight specials by her daughter. But she's not sure if the Thanksgiving deals this year will draw her away from celebrating the day with her family.

"I have mixed feelings about it, because I think you ought to be able to enjoy your holiday and not worry about shopping," she said.

Other shoppers said they were concerned about the burden that holiday hours place on employees, saying they hoped employers asked for volunteers to work the extended hours.

"Let the employees who want to work that day do it and make a little extra cash," said Warren Connelly, adding he hopes others will be able to stay home with their families.
