Leaking Gas Well Capped in Denton

advertisement

A leaking pipeline at a gas well in Denton prompted evactuations and restricted the airspace over the municipal airport for several hours Friday.

The leak was in an industrial area with a few homes, four of which were evacuated.  Additionally, Jim Christal Road was shut down eastbound at Masch Branch Road and westbound at Western Boulevard, according to a tweet by the Denton Police Department.

A Denton Public Information officer said a gas pipe had separated from the well and that fracking water and natural gas was rising into the air directly around the well site.

The incident was first reported at about 11:30 a.m. A gas capping company was called to the scene to close the leak, which was expected to take about two hours.  At 3:45 p.m., police tweeted that the situation was over and that all roads that had been closed were reopened.

Neighbors nearby to the well told NBC 5's Brian Scott that they saw the water vapor rising last night, but because they did not smell gas, they did not contact authorities. However, natural gas has no natural odor; the smell is added by gas companies to help identify it in the case of leaks.

Authorities on scene said they were not concerned about explosions due to the gas leak.

NBC 5's Brian Scott contributed to this story. As this is a developing story, some details may change as we gather more information.

The following news release was sent to NBC 5 Friday afternoon. We are publishing it below, unedited.

Donald Adair, lifelong resident of the community of West, Texas and owner of Adair Grain Inc., today issued the following statement:

This has been a terrible week for everyone in West, Texas and I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt sympathy for those affected and my appreciation for those who responded.

As a lifelong resident, my heart is broken with grief for the tragic losses to so many families in our community. I know that everyone has been deeply affected by this incident. Loved ones have been injured or killed. Homes have been damaged or destroyed. Our hearts go out to everyone who has suffered.

The selfless sacrifice of first responders who died trying to protect all of us is something I will never get over. I was devastated to learn that we lost one of our employees in the explosion. He bravely responded to the fire at the facility as a volunteer firefighter. I will never forget his bravery and his sacrifice, or that of his colleagues who rushed to the trouble.

This tragedy will continue to hurt deeply for generations to come.

My family and I can't express enough our deep appreciation for the loving service and selfless sacrifice from within and around our community responding to the urgent needs of those affected. I am proud to be associated with West Church of Christ, which has opened its doors to the State of Texas to provide grief counseling services. My family and I will continue to assist in relief efforts through our church family.

The genuine kindness we have witnessed will be the hallmark for all of our children's children.

Going forward, the owners and employees of Adair Grain and West Fertilizer Co. are working closely with investigating agencies. We are presenting all employees for interviews and will assist in the fact finding to whatever degree possible. We pledge to do everything we can to understand what happened to ensure nothing like this ever happens again in any community.

While the investigation continues, and out of respect for the investigative process, we will limit our comments during the weeks and months ahead.

A North Texas hospital's dance class is helping people with movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas offers the class twice a week. It uses seated exercises, ballet barres and dance to help the participants.

"With the music and the dance, movements together the body comes together," instructor Misty Owens said. "It reroutes itself through the brain to make the body express the choreography given in class."

She brought the class to North Texas from New York City in 2010.

"I couldn't snap my fingers before I came here," Peggy Martin said.

Martin was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease four years ago. She said she has been able to easily keep her balance since starting the class two years ago and that her doctors have reduced her medication.

Jim Rosenbloom, who has had Parkinson's disease for 11 years, was scheduled for rotator cuff surgery. Three months into the class, doctors told him there was no need for it.

"The doctors are a little bit surprised how slowly it's progressing," he said.

But not everyone has such success stories.

"It depends on what stage of the disease they are and, if they're advanced, it might not help," said Dr. Aanchal Taneja, a Texas Health movement disorders and Parkinson's disease specialist.

The hospital has more information on the class on its website.

Spraying for mosquitoes started in Highland Park on Friday.

The spraying was conducted after a mosquito caught in one of the town's four traps tested positive for the West Nile virus.

Last summer, a Highland Park resident died from complications of West Nile virus during the outbreak that sickened more than 900 people in North Texas and killed 35.

Martin Cox said he doesn't mind that the city is starting to spray so early.

"It's earlier," he said. "But last year, they were just deciding on whether to do it or not and this year they're trying to get ahead of it.".

The spraying was scheduled to finish by 5 a.m.

Highland Park is reminding people to remove any standing or stagnant water to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.

West Community Pulls Together After Tragedy

advertisement

The town of West is pulling together to help its residents affected by the fertilizer plant explosion that devastated the community Wednesday night.

In West, there is no answer to the question everyone seems to be asking: when can we return home?

The most authorities can say is "soon."

It won't be soon enough for Julia Zaharniak, who hasn't seen her home since she and her son, Anthony, 11, were running away from their home immediately after the explosion.

"It just really got to me because you just don't know what to expect and I don't have any answers to give to my son, other than this is where our life is right now," Zaharniak said Friday night.

Zaharniak found herself at the donation distribution center at the West Fest Fairgrounds, sifting through donated clothes and other items.

"I got an extra outfit which I'm wearing right now and that's the only outfit that I own," Zaharniak said.   "So I'm here to look and get me some clothes."

The donation center is a flutter of activity with explosion survivors searching for items they need and volunteers unpacking, sorting and distributing it all as quickly as they can.

"One of the most amazing things - most of these [volunteers] are actually the community members," said Shane Valverde, a field operations director with Team Rubicon, an organization helping to coordinate the donations.  "So most of these folks you see here are the ones who've been affected by this disaster."

One of those volunteers is Erick Perez, 21, who witnessed the explosion first hand and captured the moment on his cell phone video camera.

View Perez's dramatic video of the West explosion below.

View more videos at: http://nbcdfw.com.

Perez and some friends had been playing basketball when they noticed the flames rising from the West Fertilizer Plant.

Perez told NBC 5 he recorded the flames for more than eight minutes before the explosion.  The force of the blast knocked him down. The concussion and the debris combined to total his truck.

Perez spent all day Friday helping to do whatever he could at the donation site, doing so even at the risk of hurting his own employment situation.

"I told my boss I'm not coming in to work. If she's gonna fire me, oh well," Perez said.  "And from what I've heard I think I was fired. But I don't care. I can always find a new job.  I'm gonna go be with my friends and my community up here."

Grand Prairie ISD Sends Portable Classrooms to West

advertisement

The Grand Prairie school district is helping students in West by sending portable classrooms to the small town hit by a massive fertilizer plant explosion.

The district is donating three portable classrooms for sixth-graders in West who no longer have a place to learn. Lyle DuBus, the Grand Prairie district's chief operations officer, said the classrooms would hold a total of 180 students.

"We were able to round up a lot of furniture, vacuums, other items that we know that they will need," he said. "We've also been able to send some of our electricians to aid in the set-up of the portables as they get down there."

Gay Lynn Broom, director of community and youth program, said three of the West district's four campuses are out of commission after the deadly explosion.

Broom and two district officials went to West to help on Thursday.

"They don't have water, not a lot of Internet access, so we were remotely helping," she said. "We went into Waco where we could get Internet access."

Grand Prairie school officials said their close ties to the West school district kept them motivated to help as much as they could.

West Superintendent Marty Crawford is a Grand Prairie High School graduate whose father was superintendent in Grand Prairie many years ago, DuBus said.

West schools were closed Thursday and Friday after Wednesday night's blast but are scheduled to reopen for classes on Monday.

The Grand Prairie school district expects to send all three portable classrooms to West during the weekend so that they can be set up and ready for Monday.

H.D. Snow and Son Moving Inc. workers were busy Friday morning preparing to transport one of the classrooms. Owner H.D. Snow said it was a labor of love.

"They're down on their knees begging for these buildings right now," he said. "We're trying our best to get them down there for them."

Snow's daughter wrote a sign on the side of the building that reads, "A School House on the way to the Good People of WEST, Texas. God Bless West, TX."

"That means I believe there is a God Almighty and that's what this country is founded on, and we need to get back to it a little bit," Snow said.

Famous Manhunts in American History

advertisement

One of the most extensive and chaotic manhunts in Boston history came to an end Friday night when the surviving marathon bombing suspect was captured alive after hiding out all day in a shrink-wrapped pleasure boat that was parked on the side of a suburban house.

Police were tipped off about 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's whereabouts when a resident of Watertown, Mass. stepped outside to smoke a cigarette and noticed a hole in his boat's covering. He peered inside and found what appeared to be, and turned out to be, a person, covered in blood.

Once police arrived, yet another shootout ensued, less than 24 hours after an explosive gun battle between suspects and authorities sent the manhunt into high gear. That gun fight led to the death of Dzhokhar's older brother and alleged accomplice, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was found with an improvized explosive device strapped to his chest. Tsarnaev escaped that scene on foot prompting a massive lockdown as police pursued their wanted man.

Below, see some of the other high-profile domestic manhunts in U.S. history:

HUNT FOR CHRISTOPHER DORNER
Found dead: 2013

The hunt for Christopher Dorner, an ex-cop who was fired from the Los Angeles Police Department in 2008, began in early February when he was named as a suspect in the fatal shooting of the daughter of a former LAPD captain and her fiancée. Over the next few days he was named a suspect in the killing of two others—both LAPD officers—and jittery police wound up opening fire on three innocent people, two of whom suffered injuries.

The hunt intensified when Dorner's truck was discovered abandoned near Big Bear Lake, prompting a door-to-door search by police. On Feb. 12 state wildlife officers encountered Dorner on the road and a shootout and chase ensued. One sheriff's deputy died and another was injured in the confrontation.

Dorner was able to make it to a cabin where he barricaded himself and entered into a lengthy standoff with police. It all came to an fiery end when law enforcement officials filled the cabin with incendiary tear gas, setting the place ablaze. Dorner's charred remains were discovered inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

HUNT FOR "WHITEY" BULGER
Captured: 2011

James "Whitey" Bulger, a Boston gangster wanted for 19 murders, lived on the lam for 16 years before police tracked and arrested him and his longtime girlfriend in their Southern California apartment.

Bulger was working as an FBI informant when he went on the run in 1995 after learning that he would eventually face indictment. His girlfriend Catherine Grieg joined him and was charged in 1997 for harboring a fugitive.

The FBI revived its efforts to find the pair through a series of public service announcements in 2011 that focused mainly on Greig's affinity for beauty salons and animals. Shortly after the PSAs began airing a tip came in that led authorities to a Santa Monica home, where the pair was arrested "without incident." Greig, who was 60 at the time of arrest, was sentenced to eight years in prison; Bulger, who was 81, was charged with participating in 19 murders and is awaiting trial.

HUNT FOR ERIC ROBERT RUDOLPH
Captured: 2003

Eric Robert Rudolph, the man behind the 1996 Olympic bombing in Atlanta, Ga., evaded police by hiding out in the Appalachian wilderness for years.  After carrying out the Olympic attack, which killed one person and wounded 111 others, he carried out several other bombings, targeting abortion clinics and a gay club.

His final attack in 1998 provided police with their first major lead: A witness who saw him flee the scene jotted down his license plate number, which gave police an identity to pursue. It took five years, however, before Rudolph was finally arrested in Murphy, North Carolina. He was found rummaging through the trash by a local policeman who had no idea at the time whom he had encountered. Rudolph is currently serving five consecutive life sentences.

HUNT FOR BELTWAY SNIPERS
Captured: 2002

For 23 days, a pair of gunmen who executed people at random spread terror throughout the Washington, D.C.-area. The invisible killers fired fatal shots at a man closing his pizzeria, a woman pumping gas, a man driving a bus, a woman reading in the park. Ten people were killed and three critically injured in the shooting spree before law enforcement officials were able to identify and capture two suspects.

Their break in the case came when a man claiming to be the sniper called investigators and essentially confessed to a crime he had carried out in Montgomery, Ala. Authorities in Alabama who had collected forensic evidence from that crime scene were able to help link the sniper to a dark blue Chevrolet Caprice sedan. Police and media urged the public to be on the lookout for the car, which was spotted at a rest stop off Interstate 70 in Maryland.

Police closed in and found two men sleeping in the car with a Bushmaster .223-caliber rifle, a rifle's scope, a digital voice recorder and other materials. The men, John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, were arrested at the scene. In 2003 Muhammad was sentenced to death and Malvo was sentenced to six consecutive life sentences. Muhammad was executed in 2009.

HUNT FOR UNABOMBER
Captured: 1996

Ted Kacinzsky's 17-year bombing campaign prompted the FBI's longest-running domestic terrorism investigation in the agency's history. Beginning in 1978, the reclusive terrorist targeted a long list of universities, killing three people and injuring more than 20.

In 1996, acting on a tip from Kacinzsky's brother who had read a manifesto Ted had published in the New York Times, FBI agents discovered the "Unabomber" at a crude cabin in Montana. He is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

HUNT FOR TIMOTHY MCVEIGH
Captured: 1995

The search for Timothy McVeigh, who killed 168 people in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, lasted less than two hours. A state trooper pulled him over for driving without a license plate 80 miles north of Oklahoma City, shortly after he had fled the scene of the attack. The state trooper discovered a concealed weapon and placed him under arrest.

But neither the state trooper nor any other law enforcement officials yet knew that McVeigh was the man behind the bombing. More than a day would pass before a hotel employee would identify McVeigh from a police sketch. It took just one call to the FBI to find that the suspect was already in jail. He was sentenced to death in 1997 and executed by lethal injection in June 2001.

HUNT FOR TED BUNDY
Captured: 1978

Theodore Robert Bundy, one of the most notorious serial killers in American history, murdered an average of one woman a month between January 1974 and February 1978. He was arrested in August of 1975 after police pulled him over and found an ice pick, handcuffs and pantyhose in his car, and later extradited him to Colorado where he faced other charges. Before that trial began, he leapt from the window of the courthouse library and was on the loose for six days before being captured once again.

But he didn't stay in custody for long. Six months after arriving at a Colorado jail he made another escape—this time by losing 30 pounds so he could fit into a light fixture hole in the ceiling of his cell. He made it across the country to Tallahassee, Fla. where his reign of terror continued.

There, he broke into a Florida State University sorority house in January 1978 and murdered two sleeping women, bludgeoning and strangling them to death. Weeks later he abducted and killed a 12-year-old girl—the final murder in his years-long spree. He was captured for good after police in Pensacola, Fla. found him driving a stolen car in February of 1978. He was convicted for the FSU murders and sentenced to death in June 1979. He was executed in 1989.

HUNT FOR BONNIE AND CLYDE
Killed:1934

Clyde Champion Barrow and Bonnie Parker, one of the most infamous couples in American history, were ambushed and killed by police in Louisiana after a brazen crime spree that captured the country's attention. The pair was accused of 13 murders and a host of robberies around the country. Their run ended after police lured them into a trap: Police enlisted the help of an ex-con, one of Barrow's former associates, who promised Barrow protection at his home. As the couple's car sped into the trap, police ambushed them, sending the car careening off the road. Both were dead at the scene.

HUNT FOR LINCOLN'S ASSASSIN:
Killed: 1865

John Wilkes Booth fled Ford's Theatre in Washington after carrying out the first assassination of an American president on April 14, 1865. He and an accomplice, David Herold, led authorities on a 12-day chase that ended in Virginia. Authorities offered a $100,000 reward for information that would lead to the capture of the brazen killer, and dispatched federal troops to search southern Maryland after receiving a tip that he might be in the area. Booth made several stops while on the lam, including his infamous stop at the home of Dr. Samuel Mudd who treated Booth's leg injury caused by his leap onto the theater's stage. He was finally tracked to a Virginia farm and shot and killed by Union soldiers.

Public officials, celebrities, and religious leaders sent messages of support to the community of West after a massive explosion at a fertilizer plant.

President Barack Obama released the following statement on the explosion in West, TX:

Today our prayers go out to the people of West, Texas in the aftermath of last night's deadly explosion at a fertilizer plant.   A tight-knit community has been shaken, and good, hard-working people have lost their lives.  I want to thank the first responders who worked tirelessly through the night to contain the situation and treat the wounded.  My Administration, through FEMA and other agencies, is in close contact with our state and local partners on the ground to make sure there are no unmet needs as search and rescue and response operations continue.  West is a town that many Texans hold near and dear to their hearts, and as residents continue to respond to this tragedy, they will have the support of the American people.

Gov. Rick Perry today released the following statement regarding the incident in West:

"We are monitoring developments and gathering information as details continue to emerge about this incident. We have also mobilized state resources to help local authorities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of West, and the first responders on the scene."

Perry is expected to make a public statement Thursday at 11:45 a.m. in Austin.

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) issued the following statement after learning of the explosion in West, TX.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the horrific explosion in West, Texas. We grieve for those who are injured and have lost loved ones, and are grateful to the firefighters and first responders who risked their own lives to keep others safe. Today we ask all Texans to keep West in their thoughts and prayers. We remain in communication with Gov. Perry's office and emergency management officials, and stand to offer whatever support we can."

Congressman Marc Veasey released the following statement following last night's explosion at the fertilizer plant in West, Texas:

"Last night's explosion in West is truly saddening and a terrible tragedy.  As Congressman of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, my heart goes out to our neighbors only a few miles south of the 33rd Congressional District. A ground team of police and fire departments, federal agencies, first responders, and numerous agencies have been working hard around the clock to assist those in the area.  Let us keep the victims and their families in our thoughts and prayers."

DPS, Mayor: Town Does Not Need More First Responders at This Time

The town of West has plenty of law enforcement and search-and-rescue crews on the scene, West Mayor Tommy Muska said.

When asked what the town needs, Muska said, "We need your prayers. There's a lot of people that got hurt. There's a lot of people, I'm sure, will not be here tomorrow."

Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Trooper D.L. Wilson reiterated the mayor's request that no one come to West to help.

"We are overflowing with help, and we don't need any more help as far as that goes," Wilson said.

People can call the following emergency number for information on family and loved ones after 9 a.m. Thursday: 254-286-4155

1 Hospitalized After Chicago Sinkhole Swallows 3 Cars

advertisement

One person was hospitalized after three vehicles were swallowed Thursday morning by a large sinkhole on Chicago's South Side, officials said.

More than five inches of heavy rain across the area caused the sinkhole to rip open around 5:20 a.m. in the South Deering neighborhood, Chicago Police spokesman Mike Sullivan said.

Police said the injured person was driving when the road caved. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Two cars were inside the hole when fire crews arrived. A third car, which was parked, slid into the hole after they arrived.

Flooding has caused multiple road closures, including two major expressways, throughout the area. About 300 flights were canceled at O'Hare International Airport and dozens of schools were closed.

The Illinois Department of Transportation urged commuters who take expressways into work to consider staying home. Two more inches of rain is expected throughout the day as area rivers continue to swell and neighborhoods flood.

Part of West Decimated by Blast

DPS Trooper Updates West Explosion

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper D.L. Wilson held a news conference at midnight to update the situation in West where a fertilizer plant exploded in the town of West.

More Photos and Videos

A very powerful explosion at a fertilizer plant decimated a neighborhood in the small town of West Wednesday night, injuring more than 160 and killing as many as 15, officials say.

During a Thursday morning news conference, Sgt. William Patrick Swanton, with the Waco Police Department, said rescuers were still involved in a rescue operation and were conducting door-to-door searches looking for trapped people and other survivors who may need medical attention.

"They are still in, what they're calling, a search and rescue mode.  That's good news to me, meaning that they're probably still getting injured people; they have not gotten to the point of no return where they don't think there is anybody still alive," said Swanton.

Rescuers are being very thorough, Swanton said, and are taking their time with searches to make sure no one who needs help is overlooked.  Swanton described the process as hard and gut-wrenching.

He had no new estimates of the number of people injured or killed in the blast, though he did say that a significant area near the plant had been destroyed, houses had been flattened and that part of that community is gone.

Between 50 and 75 buildings have been damaged or destroyed by the blast, Swanton confirmed, including homes and business.

Swanton added that the fire at the facility is still smoldering, as are several other fires at homes near the blast site. None of the fires are out of control and thunderstorms pushing through the area are being credited with not only keeping the fires in check but with helping contain chemicals in the air.

"I can tell you there is nothing out of control there at this point, meaning there is no fire out of control, there is no chemical escape from the fertilizer plant that is out of control. They are working to contain everything that they have in that area and are doing a fantastic job in very harsh circumstances ... as you can imagine," Swanton said.

Gov. Rick Perry will hold a news conference at 11:45 a.m. in Austin where further information is expected to be released regarding a possible disaster declaration and recovery efforts.

Officials at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport have implemented their Irregular Operations Concessions Plan for American Airlines passengers stranded at the airport.

The airline suffered a computer problem Tuesday that cut off their ability to communicate with their reservations system. As a result, all flights have been grounded until at least 4 p.m. CT.

Meanwhile, passengers have been stuck onboard aircraft and in airline terminals awaiting departure.

Shortly before 3 p.m., DFW Airport began using three 90-passenger buses to deplane aircraft that are not at a gate.

"At DFW, there are some aircraft on the ramps awaiting departure, as well as arrivals flights awaiting gate space. Aircraft have also returned to the gate and deplaned passengers," officials with the airline said. "All passengers are safe, and DFW will continue to work with American Airlines and all aviation service providers, as needed."

Airport officials said concessions at Terminals A, B, C and D will remain open until at least midnight.

Raw Video: Explosions at the Boston Marathon

Boston.com sports producer Steve Silva shot this video of the two explosions that occurred near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

On the day after the Boston terror attack, the greater Boston community learned more about those whose lives were lost.

The three people killed in Monday's dual explosions at the finish line of the prestigious Boston Marathon are identified as a third-grader from Dorchester, a 29-year old from Medford, Massachusetts and a Boston University student.

Eight-year-old Martin Richard was killed from the blast as he was watching the race with his parents and two siblings. His mother, Denise, and sister Jane are continuing to recover with very serious injuries.

Thousands of people filled a park in Dorchester, Massachusetts to pray for the Richard family, who residents described as being very community-oriented.

The loss of the friendly Little Leaguer left parents and classmates asking, Why?

"It's confusing," said Veronica Phillips, who was in Richard's First Communion class at St. Ann's Church in town. "I don't know why this world is so cruel."

Boston's largest neighborhood congregated for the half-hour vigil at Garvey Park.

Candles were raised and small American flags waved as the close-knit community described their shock to those from national and international media.

Following the service, led by Fr. John Connolly of nearby St. Brendan's Church, the crowd spontaneously broke into a rendition of "God Bless America."

River Forest Honors Hometown Diplomat

Anne Smedinghoff was one of five Americans killed Saturday in a suicide car bombing as they delivered textbooks to school children. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Natalie Martinez reports.

NBCChicago.com will provide a livestream of Anne Smedinghoff's funeral beginning at 10:30 a.m. right here.

Hundreds are expected to gather Wednesday in suburban Chicago to say their final goodbyes to an American diplomat killed in the line of duty.

Anne Smedinghoff, 25, of River Forest was killed 11 days ago by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan. She was the first U.S. diplomat to die on the job since last year's Benghazi, Libya, attack.

Smedinghoff's funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Church in River Forest. A long line of people waited at her visitation Tuesday to pay respects to her loved ones.

Earlier this week, Secretary of State John Kerry took a detour to Chicago to meet privately with Smedinghoff's family. Kerry said Smeddinghoff was "full of ideals and full of hope," and her parents said they took comfort in the outpouring of support.

"It was a very personal visit and for us very comforting and consoling," Smedinghoff's father, Tom, said after the meeting. "He again expressed his personal condolences to us for the loss of Anne and talked quite a bit about Anne's work and service."

Last week Smedinghoff's Fenwick High School alma mater held a special mass in her honor.

"For one so young, she seemed so focused and determined to unravel the big problems," said Smedinghoff's AP Spanish teacher, Irene Drago, who spoke of her quiet intelligence and special gift for foreign language.

"Teachers are supposed to inspire students," Drago said. "But most teachers quickly realize the reverse is often true. Anne inspired me."

Weiner 2nd Place in Democratic NYC Mayoral Poll

Anthony Weiner Speaks After Report He's Eyeing Mayoral Run

After a New York Times Magazine piece was published Wednesday detailing Anthony Weiner's consideration of a mayoral run, Weiner spoke to NBC 4 New York for the first time Wednesday.

Disgraced former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner could mount a serious Democratic primary challenge against City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, whose lead in the mayoral race is slipping, a new NBC New York/Marist College poll shows.

Weiner, who resigned after a 2011 sexting scandal but has been edging back into politics, could throw the Democratic primary into disarray, siphoning votes not only from Quinn but from other contenders, including Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former Comptroller Bill Thompson, the poll reveals.

The poll of registered voters taken last Thursday through Monday offers the first glimpse at what the race would look like with Weiner. The survey shows that if he entered the race now, he'd start out in second place, with 15 percent of the vote among Democratic respondents.

That's short of front-runner Quinn's 26 percent, and nowhere near the 40 percent needed to avoid a runoff. And there are still many voters who are wary of his return, including 50 percent of Democrats who said they wouldn't consider voting for him.

People like 70-year-old Mary Reynolds, who lives in Weiner's former Brooklyn congressional district and took part in the poll.

"Oh, Anthony Weiner, he annoys the devil out of me," Reynolds told NBC 4 New York in a follow-up interview. "He's a spineless person. I would not vote for him at all. I speak with my neighbors, and they say, "What is he, a joke?'"

Still, some findings in the poll could be seen as encouraging for Weiner, who aspired to be mayor for many years before his career hit the rocks. He has only recently gone public with his story and begun attempts to repair his image.

In that context, he can already tout results.

His favorability rating jumped from 34 percent to 45 percent since Marist last asked voters about him two months ago. The number of voters with an unfavorable impression of him hasn't changed much; it stands at 41 percent.

"These are not great numbers, but from his perspective, he's trending more positive," said Lee Miringoff, director of Marist Institute for Public Opinion. "He's obviously polarizing, with a high negative rating. But when he gets into a field that's not well formed, he does fall into second place and becomes a player in this."

Weiner declined to comment.

The poll surveyed 873 registered voters, 556 of whom were Democrats. Results for the Democratic respondents had a plus or minus 4 percentage point margin of error. Results for the entire group of registered voters had a plus or minus 3 percent point margin of error.

Quinn has suffered from being the front-runner, and the target of most negative campaigning, Miringoff said. The City Council speaker polled at 37 percent in February, several points higher than she stands now, with or without Weiner. Her favorability is also down among Democrats since February, from 65 percent to 59 percent.

According to the poll, if Weiner entered the Democratic primary today, his 15 percent would put him behind Quinn's 26 percent but ahead of City Comptroller John Liu (12 percent), de Blasio (11 percent), Thompson (11 percent) and former City Councilman Sal Albanese (2 percent).

By comparison, without Weiner, Quinn would receive 30 percent of Democratic votes and de Blasio would be second with 15 percent, followed by Thompson (14 percent), Liu (11 percent) and Albanese (2 percent).

In short, with Weiner in the race, Quinn, de Blasio and Thompson all suffer.

"He'd make it much more difficult for anyone to reach 40 percent to avoid a runoff," Miringoff said.

Those numbers illustrate the fluidity of the Democratic primary, in which 22 percent of voters remain undecided, the poll shows. And even among those who have a preference, only about a third say they're firmly committed.

"This is a race with no incumbent," Miringoff said. "It's understandable that voters are going to be shopping around. And Weiner doesn't clarify that."

The undecided include Arthur Raphael, 52, of Brooklyn.

Raphael, who participated in the poll, said in an interview that he was a supporter of Weiner's when he was in Congress, and thought that the sexting scandal was blown out of proportion. He said he wanted Weiner in the mayoral race, if only to able to consider him as an option.

"He deserves to be given a voice and to be in the race and to be heard and to be a part of the debates," Raphael said. "I"m not saying I'm voting for him, but I believe he's earnest and possibly not corrupt."

Pollsters asked general election voters about two hypothetical November matchups against likely Republican nominee Joe Lhota. If Quinn was the Democratic nominee, she'd beat Lhota 59 percent to 19 percent. If Weiner were the nominee, he'd beat Lhota 51 percent to 28 percent. In both scenarios, 21 percent said they were undecided.

Weiner, 47, resigned from his Brooklyn congressional seat in June 2011 after using Twitter to send provocative photos of himself to women and when the exchanges became public, he claimed he'd been hacked. He eventually confessed and went into virtual hiding with his wife, Huma Abedin, a senior adviser to Hillary Clinton. At the time, Abedin was pregnant with their first child.

Weiner first ran for mayor in 2005, and nearly forced a runoff against Fernando Ferrer, but conceded in the name of party solidarity. He planned to run again in 2009, and was considered a leading contender, but dropped out after Mayor Bloomberg chose to run for a third term. Prior to his unraveling, Weiner had begun to plan for a 2013 campaign. He still has more than $4 million in his campaign account.

In recent weeks, Weiner has been making slow steps toward another mayoral run. He commissioned an internal poll in March to gauge what voters thought of him. He granted a series of intimate interviews with The New York Times Magazine, which resulted in a cover story that detailed his efforts to repair his marriage and decide whether to pursue his political dream. He released a policy booklet  that was similar to one he distributed in anticipation of running in 2009. And he sat down with NY1 for an interview, broadcast Monday, in which he talked policy, apologized for his past behavior and said he was nearing a decision on the 2013 race.

One advantage that Weiner enjoys is name recognition: for good or ill, a lot of New Yorkers know who he is.

Democrats seem to be warming to the idea of a Weiner candidacy. In an October poll, only 28 percent wanted him to run, and 57 percent did not. Now, 40 percent want him to run, and 46 percent do not, the poll found.

But Democrats are divided on whether Weiner has changed as a person. Thirty-seven percent think he has, and 32 percent disagree. The remaining 31 percent aren't sure.

"Weiner can look at that and say, 'A third are on my side right now,'" Miringoff said. But the numbers also show that if he chooses to run, "he's clearly going to have to prove himself."

More than 100 runners gathered outside Luke's Locker in Dallas for a special morning run to show support for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Several Luke's Locker locations throughout North Texas held special 6 a.m. solidarity runs Wednesday.

Runners were asked to wear blue and gold clothing -- the colors of the Boston Marathon. Many runners who competed in the race in years past wore their official marathon jackets.

The six-mile workout was a way to show the support of the running community. Luke's Locker sent 18 runners to the Boston Marathon as part of its workout club. They're all safe.

Luke's Locker will also donate $1 for every shoe sale through the end of April to a Boston charity to help victims of the blasts.

Several locations are also holding an evening solidarity run at 6 p.m. Wednesday night.

The freeway cleanup of what were frozen chicken parts has entered day two along Interstate 30 in Fort Worth.

The 18-wheeler carrying the parts overturned early Tuesday morning and the cleanup has been ongoing since.

No main lanes are blocked, but the on-ramps from University Drive and Forest Park Drive were blocked.

Crews estimated the cleanup would be finished around 6 a.m., but that projection was missed.  Just after 9 a.m. Wednesday, officials said they hoped to have the crash cleared by 10:15 a.m.

The cleanup is considered a HazMat situation because of the materials being cleaned up.

The truck had been loaded with 40,000 pounds of frozen chicken parts before the crash.

Amid the Tragedy, a Marriage Proposal

advertisement

Andrew Ruggiero, of Boston, planned to be at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, down on one knee with diamond in hand, when his girlfriend crossed the finish line.

He and Melissa Blasczyk, a Wallingford, Conn. native, did get engaged Monday, but only after terrifying moments amid tragic events as explosions turned a festive day into a tragic one.

Blasczyk ran the Boston Marathon on Monday, and Ruggiero had secretly arranged to become a finish-line volunteer and had a news crew ready to film the proposal at the finish line.

"Trying to play it cool, and not let her know that I had this elaborate plan with a diamond ring at the finish line, with her family, with my family," he said.

Then, the bombs went off.

"We were about 10 minutes up, and I had my back to the fence, and you heard the first loud boom," Ruggiero said.

Melissa had safely been turned back from the finish line, but her family did not yet know that as they stared at the finish line when the first bomb went off.

"I walked away from the race and walked all the way to Cambridge, about a couple miles away," she said. She was getting news of what had happened from Facebook and CNN.

Meanwhile, Blasczyk's loved ones set out to look for her. They called her cell phone hundreds of times, but there was no answer. Then, a friend spotted Melissa on the street and drove her home.

"Everyone came and gave me a big hug. It was so great to see everyone. He (Ruggiero) was standing there a little awkwardly," Blasczyk said.

It's because Andrew was debating whether he should pop the question.

"In light of such dark evil, even I felt it important to say it's not going to deter me from finally marrying the girl that I love," Ruggiero said.

So Ruggiero got down on one knee inside their apartment and asked for Melissa's hand in marriage.

No date is set yet, but the couple plan to wed in 2014.

More than 900 Texans were listed to take part in the 2013 Boston Marathon and more than 300 North Texans from 47 different cities were in the marathon when two bombs exploded near the crowded finish line on Monday.

Three people died and more than 140 others were injured in a terrifying scene of broken glass, smoke and severed limbs, authorities said.

Many of the local runners are still shaken by the explosions. Some had already crossed the finish line and left the area before they heard the news. Runners said they were contacted by family and friends reaching out to make sure their loved ones were all right.

North Texan in Boston: "I Heard a Loud Explosion"

Kim Gray had finished the Boston Marathon and talks about the frightening scene as people realized explosions had rocked the finish line, meanwhile Luke's Locker is trying to reach out to North Texans who participated in the Boston Marathon.

More Photos and Videos

"It's almost like somebody coming into your home and tearing it up, blowing it up.  You know, it's real personal, so whenever you see something where in a marathon that it become dangerous.  It's scary.  It's sad," says runner Kelly Green from Irving.

"I was in disbelief. I couldn't believe someone would come to such an amazing, wonderful, inspiring event and wreak havoc and terrorize people who are innocent, especially from what I've heard – children," says Plano runner, Jan Vicary.

"I don't like running marathons but it's such a fun race. there must have been about a million spectators out there cheering me on so I'll come back every year, hope to qualify and come back," says John Morgan from Grand Prairie.

Kim Gray of Arlington had finished the marathon about 30 minutes before the explosions and was three blocks away when it happened.

"I heard a loud explosion it was really loud almost like a building was coming down. Like in the movies when they blow up a building," said Gray. "I didn't know until people started running toward me and they were telling me what happened and they were all crying, so I finally figured it all out."

Gray said the area was chaotic.

"It was pretty scary, they were crying and running toward me and telling me to turn around. I just got really scared and started crying, I didn't know what to do because they're telling me to leave, telling me to leave Boston and I was trying to get to my hotel," said Gray.

NBC 5 profiled a Parker County woman who was running in her first marathon in her mother's memory. Felicia Scott, who was among the 20,000 people who planned to participate in the marathon this year, was not injured in the blasts that rocked the finish line.

"Yes I'm OK," she told NBC 5. "I wasn't near the finish line yet, so they stopped us. I'm sitting in a Holiday Inn right now just waiting until I can get back to my hotel."

Scott was stopped at mile 24 and told to go to a nearby church. She moved to a Holiday Inn across the street that was warmer and has been there ever since.

Keller senior Megan Forrest was still running when she heard the blasts. She took to Twitter to tell her loved ones in North Texas she was OK.

Popular North Texas running store Luke's Locker has 18 runners representing the store in Boston and getting through to them has been difficult.

"Our primary focus now is just really trying to make sure everybody we know is safe and OK," said Luke's Locker CEO Matt Lucas. "It's very disappointing, in terms of the running community, that this would happen. Running is such a peaceful event."

Early Tuesday morning, dozens of runners gathered at the store for a morning "social run." The mood during the 6 a.m. run was somber and serious as about 30 joined in with heavy hearts.

For the runners in Dallas, it was a restless night of trying to get updates from the their friends in Boston. Many said they only got updates because strangers were letting people use their cell phones or power outlets.

"I had people checking in on Facebook. Texting was very difficult. I finally got a text from my friend, who ended up sitting in a stranger's car, borrowing his phone," local runner Colm Bergin said. "I wouldn't say it was panic, but definitely chaos until we were able to hear from everyone and confirm they were alright."

The team from Luke's Locker has confirmed that all 18 runners were safe after the blasts.

More runners are expected home Tuesday morning. The first flight from Boston back to DFW Airport took off just before 6 a.m. Tuesday. Three flights land from Boston on Monday night.

NBC 5's Elvira Sakmari, Kendra Lyn, Jeff Smith, Andres Gutierrez, and Ben Russell contributed to this report.

After Bombings, Web Turns to Mr. Rogers

advertisement

After a pair of explosions rocked the Boston Marathon, killing three and injuring more than 150, millions took to social media to look for loved ones, let friends and family know they were OK, and to express sympathies to victims.

On Facebook, two disparate voices carried the day: the beloved children's TV host Mr. Rogers, who died in 2003, and comedian Patton Oswalt.

A black-and-white photo of a smiling Mr. Rogers made the rounds, with the caption, "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'"

Oswalt, a man best known for a wit that can be as merciless as it is acerbic, offered a reminder of the prevalence of good, one that took Rogers' point a step further:

You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out… This is a giant planet and we're lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they're pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus... This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We'd have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, "The good outnumber you, and we always will."

In addition to sharing these messages, many on Facebook changed their cover photo to a picture of the Boston skyline, and still others switched out their profile photo for the iconic "B" logo of the Boston Red Sox, or some other similar show of support.

A piece by Bruce Schneier of The Atlantic in which he implored readers to "Refuse to be terrorized," bore a headline that included the phrase "Keep Calm Carry On." Originally part of a 1939 propaganda campaign in England meant to boost morale, the phrase has of late developed something of a kitsch cool about it, but yesterday and today it was repeated with sincerity time and again on Twitter.

In the moments after the explosions, the Twitterverse was quickly flooded with the hashtag #prayforboston and some variation on the message, "You go to a movie, You get shot, You go to school, You get shot, You go to a marathon, You get bombed."

The terror in Boston also brought out attention-seeking charlatans. Twitter has already suspended a fake account, @_BostonMarathon, which claimed it would donate $1 to victims for each retweet.

But Google offered a stark counterpoint to fake Twitter accounts by establishing a "Person Finder" for the Boston Marathon, a site where people can look for or post information about loved ones. As of Tuesday morning, it was tracking more than 5,200 records.

Parents Speak Out About Calif. Teen's Assault, Suicide

Raw Video: Sheila Pott Speaks About Daughter's Sex Assault, Suicide

Sheila Pott, the mother of Audrie Pott, speaks at a news conference on April 15, 2013 about her Saratoga 15-year-old being sexually assaulted in September and taking her own life.

Raw Video: Larry Pott Speaks About Daughter's Sex Assault, Suicide

Larry Pott, the father of Audrie Pott, speaks at a news conference on April 15, 2013 about his Saratoga 15-year-old being sexually assaulted in September and taking her own life.

More Photos and Videos

The family of a California teen who has become a national symbol for sexual assault and cyber bullying spoke publicly for the first time Monday to call for tougher cyber bullying laws and implore anyone who knows about their daughter's case to come forward.

"If this could happen to my daughter, this could happen to anyone," Sheila Pott said at a Monday news conference.

Audrie Pott, 15, tried to commit suicide on Sept. 10, eight days after a Labor Day house party where she drank too much, passed out and was allegedly sexually assaulted by three fellow students at Saratoga High - boys she had been friends with since middle school. She died on Sept. 12 in the hospital, according to her family's lawsuit.

The 16-year-old boys were arrested Thursday on sexual assault charges and are expected to appear in a private juvenile detention hearing on Tuesday. NBC Bay Area was the first to report that news last week.

In a statement, their lawyers called much of the reporting "inaccurate" and distanced their clients from the alleged crime and Audrie's suicide. "Most disturbing is the attempt to link Audrey's [sic] suicide to the specific actions of these three boys," some of the statement read.

NBC Bay Area also learned on Monday after the news conference from attorney Bob Allard that there is a photograph of the girl with writing on her leg. At least one of the boys, Allard said, wrote on her saying something to the effect of  "---- was here." Allard has not seen the photograph, but it was described to him. He referened it in a wrongful death lawsuit he filed on Monday in Santa Clara County Superior Cout, which also alleges the parents of the house party are also responsible.

Her parents didn't learn why their daughter killed herself until her memorial service, where some friends told them there was more to the story that they should look into. That's when they hired Allard's law firm to investigate.

NBC Bay Area doesn't normally identify victims of sexual assault or suicide, but has used the girl's name in this report with her parents' permission. They are hoping the story will help prevent something like this from every happening to anyone else.

It was Sheila Pott's idea to use her daughter's name in such a public forum, which has now become a global story.

She and her ex-husband, Larry Pott, and his wife, Lisa Pott, are working on creating a law to stiffen penalties in California for cyber bullying and to treat juveniles as adults in some cases of sexual assault. They said they are now in the research phase of what they hope will be one day called "Audrie's Law."

At the news conference, some new details into Audrie's story were revealed.

According to Allard, the Pott's family attorney,  the boys took "at least one photo" of the assault and showed it by email and text to at least ten people. He also alleged the boys harrassed her afterward and "took steps to cover up evidence."

In her mind, Audrie felt as though "the whole school knew," Allard said at news conference, citing Audrie's Facebook page the family scoured after her death.

Allard made a point to say there was a direct cause-and-effect between the party and Audrie's suicide, where hours before she killed herself, she called her mother: "I can't do this anymore Mom. Pick me up." Allard and Pott's parents said they are calling on the District Attorney and the judge involved to try these teens as adults.

Her Facebook page, discovered by her parents only after her memorial service, also showed haunting comments the normally vivacious girl made in private messages to friends, which her family shared publicly. Some of the comments include statements such as:

"I have a reputation for a night I don't remember."

"The whole school is talking about it."

"My life is ruined."

"The boys who did this can die in a hole for all I care."

"I'm in hell."

Still, some evidence - including a cell phone that took the photograph - has not been turned over; at the conference, Lisa Pott said the family learned from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office that one of the boys said he lost or broke it, and the family begged for more information.

Allard filed a 9-count wrongful death lawsuit against the boys and the homeowner where the Labor Day party took place, in large part, to compel some of this information to come forward. The complaint includes allegations of negligence, conspiracy, sexual battery, defamation and false imprisonment.

The school told the family administrators had "disciplined" the boys and expelled them from the football team, but not from school, Allard said, because the alleged assault did not take place at school.

Audrie's parents, on a website dedicated to her, described her as a gifted art student, a writer and a musician who played viola and piano, and she was part of a middle school band that played for Barack Obama's inauguration.

Her father teared up and got very emotional during one point of the news conference in describing his daughter, who used to be "so full of life."

"She was beautiful on the outside," Larry Pott said. "But she was more beautiful on the inside. she was sweet and kind. She was the wittiest and funniest kick in the pants you'd ever seen."

FOR MORE INFORMATION: The Audrie Pott Foundation has been set up to provide information about Audrie and efforts to raise money to provide art and music scholarships to Bay Area students.

When the bomb blasts went off near the finish line at the Boston Marathon on Monday, former New England Patriots offensive lineman Joe Andruzzi, who was there for an event to raise money for cancer research, jumped into action.

A photo the New England Patriots circulating on Twitter shows Andruzzi carrying a woman after the blast.

Andruzzi tweeted that he and his wife are fine and issued a statement to ESPN, saying that the spotlight should not be on him. It should be on the first responders and runners, who he said are the true heroes.

"The spotlight should remain firmly on the countless individuals -- first responders, medics, EMTs, runners who crossed the finish line and kept on running straight to give blood, and the countless civilians who did whatever they could to save lives. They were the true heroes. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this senseless tragedy," the statement to ESPN says.

Andruzzi is a cancer survivor and president of the Joe Andruzzi Foundation, which raises money for cancer patients and their families and funds pediatric brain cancer research. The foundation had a team of runners in the marathon and had an event at Forum, on Boylston Street near the site of the second explosion.

Andruzzi has three brothers who are New York City firefighters and responded to the 9/11 attacks.

Andruzzi, a former Southern Connecticut State University All-American, was with the Patriots from 2000 to 2004 and contributed to three Super Bowl wins.

Raw Video: Explosions at the Boston Marathon

Boston.com sports producer Steve Silva shot this video of the two explosions that occurred near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

The young victim of the Boston Marathon bombings is being remembered as a vivacious boy who loved to run and climb.

Eight-year-old Martin Richard was among the three people killed in the explosions Monday. That's according to a person who talked to a friend of the family and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. His mother and sister were badly injured.

A candle burned on the stoop of the family's single-family home in the city's Dorchester section Tuesday, and the word "Peace" was written in chalk on the front walkway.

Neighbor Betty Delorey says Martin loved to climb the neighborhood trees, and hop the fence outside his home.

Neighbors and residents gathered on Monday night at Tavolo Restaurant to remember Richard.

"They are beloved by this community," City Councilor at Large Ayanna Pressley told the Boston Globe. "They contribute in many ways. That's why you see this outpouring. It's surreal, it's tragic."

Richard's mother, Denise, and 6-year-old sister were both badly injured by the blast and were being treated at a Boston hospital, according to WHDH. Denise suffered a brain injury that required surgery, and the sister lost a leg.

The children's father, Bill, is the director of a local community group. The boy's mother works at the Neighborhood House Charter School, where her children attend classes.

Dozens of Dallas runners gathered early Tuesday morning for the popular Luke's Locker morning "social run."

The popular running store sent about 18 North Texas runners to Boston for the marathon. Luke's Locker said everyone who ran as part of its team is safe.

Most of the runners are still in Boston and are planning to head back to North Texas today.

The mood during Tuesday's 6 a.m. run was somber and serious. About 30 runners in total met in the parking lot with heavy hearts to start the jog.

For the runners in Dallas, it was been a restless night of trying to get updates from their friends. Many said they only got updates because strangers were letting people use their cell phones and power outlets.

"I had people checking in on Facebook. Texting was very difficult. I finally got a text from my friend, who ended up sitting in a stranger's car, borrowing his phone. So I wouldn't say it was panic, but definitely chaos until we were able to hear from everyone and confirm they were alright," said local runner Colm Bergin.

On Monday, Luke's Locker CEO Matt Lucas said he was saddened by the attacks.

"It's very disappointing, in terms of the running community, that this would happen. Running is such a peaceful event," Lucas said.
