Gold medalist Gabby Douglas is crisscrossing the country, promoting her book.

Douglas describes "Raising the Bar" as a big scrapbook with pictures, quotes, thoughts and memories.

She said she hasn't been back to the gym since winning gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London but is headed back soon.

"It's going to be hard, but I'm ready for it," she said.

"I think I'm going to ease on in to it," she added, laughing.

And she hasn't ruled out the 2016 Olympics.

"I hope to see myself in another Olympics, and there's so many great opportunities that I could be doing, acting, producing, hosting," she said.

The 17-year-old also hasn't ruled out college, though she said it's hard for gymnasts to do that while they're still competing.

Denton Emergency Crews Conduct Disaster Drill

advertisement

Emergency responders from across Denton County conducted a full-scale disaster drill on Friday.

In Friday's scenario, severe weather struck during a major soccer tournament and a lightning bolt hit C.H. Collins Stadium during the chaos of trying to evacuate.

"These types of drills give us the opportunity to work together before a major incident occurs to ensure we are trained and ready," said Michael Penaluna, emergency management coordinator.

The goal of the drill was to hone skills in a worst-case scenario situation, which was made as real as possible.

"How you train is the way you're going to act in the real deal," said Denton police spokesman Officer Ryan Grelle. "We try to make it as realistic as possible so when and if it happens for real life, we're not going to be shocked at it. We can go in and do our jobs like we're trained to do."

To put the tension on right away, the fire department started off with a small explosion and controlled diesel fire outside the stadium. Within minutes, volunteer actors from the University of North Texas and the various agencies with fake injuries ranging from cuts and disorientation to severed limbs were scattered throughout the stadium.

"Some of the fans got trampled on, fell down the stairs; then, just total mass confusion down here at some point for everyone here," Grelle said.

The "injured" didn't always make it easy for first responders. While some were very cooperative, others acted disoriented or unruly, with one even complaining that he was being forced to wait too long -- all reactions the crews would likely encounter in an actual disaster.

Most of the responders were from Denton's emergency teams, but mutual aid came in from neighboring communities such as Krum, Aubrey and Frisco, just like it would in the real thing.

The exercise extended to more than just law enforcement.

The faux patients were sent by ambulance and helicopter to area hospitals so workers there could react. The Red Cross showed up to provide aid, and the Denton school district launched its emergency plans at the high school stadium.

"If there was a real disaster, we'd be out to give support to the victims themselves, to support the first responders," said Stan Bugala from the Red Cross.

Not everything went perfect during the drill. At one point, radios went down, and the chopper wasn't coordinated to land right away. Other hiccups popped up everywhere by design and by accident.

Such hiccups are what the teams need in training scenarios because those things will likely happen in the real deal, leaders said.

Denton police said they take the drills seriously.

"It's always in the back of our mind that we may be the next Boston, we may be the next West," Grelle said. "[We're] hoping that we're not, but if it comes to time that we are ready, we know what to do."

Friday is a very special day for Fort Worth-based American Airlines.  Eighty years ago today, on May 3, 1933, the first four American Airlines stewardesses graduated from training and headed out on their first flight.

So we thought, what better time to take a trip down memory lane.

Over the last 80 years things have changed quite a bit for stewardesses, now commonly referred to as flight attendants. The four original American Airlines stewardesses graduated after three days of training in 1933. In 1957 the airline opened the world's first school dedicated to the profession, the American Airlines Stewardess College. At graduation,  a "flyover" was not uncommon as part of the celebration.

Traveling the world has always been a glamorous profession. Fittingly, much of the evolution of the profession has had to do with the uniform; from the military look of the early years, to the cutting-edge style of Bill Blass's uniforms in 1972.

They also broke down barriers by being one of the first airlines to hire black stewardesses. They were also the very first to carry AED's on every single flight.

American said Friday it is excited to celebrate and honor the professionals who have been the face of the airline for the last eight decades, and for those to come.

Pit Bull Saves N.Y. Woman from House Fire

A pit bull saved a woman from a fire in her home in New York on Friday, barking to alert her as the flames began to spread from the front to the back of the house.

Jackie Bonasera said she was drying her hair in an upstairs bathroom of the home in East Norwich, N.Y., on Long Island, when she heard the dog barking. She ran downstairs and saw the flames on the side of her garage.

She was able to escape the house.

"I ran out of the house and my neighbors came running over, and then I thought about the dog — I'm like, 'He saved my life, I have to save his,'" Bonasera recounted.

"So I just put my robe over my face and I ran back in and I grabbed the dog and then I stood out here and I watched my house burn," she said.

Bonasera believes she would have been trapped upstairs if the dog, named Cain, hadn't alerted her to the fire.

Bonasera's daughter, Alexus Stallworth, said Cain is "the town hero."

"He's a pit bull, too," said Stallworth. "They have such bad reps, but he's such a good boy."

Stallworth was outside the house when the fire broke out and captured the blaze on her cell phone camera.

More than 70 firefighters were needed to stop the fire. Although the cause of the blaze has not been determined and the arson squad is investigating, police don't believe it's suspicious.

The homeowner is a contractor who is working on several homes that were damaged by Sandy, and he said he now hopes he can get his own home fixed before winter.

Massive Food Fight at Fla. High School Ends with Student's Arrest

advertisement

A student was arrested after a food fight escalated at Cypress Bay High School in the South Florida suburb of Weston, according to authorities.

A 17-year-old was arrested on one charge of battery and one charge of disorderly conduct Friday afternoon after a massive food fight that spilled out into the school's courtyard, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said school administrators witnessed a 12th-grader throw an object. When the assistant principal tried to stop the student, he resisted by pulling, pushing and striking the assistant principal, authorities said.

He was taken into custody by deputies, one of whom sustained a knee laceration and a twisted ankle, according to police. The student, who turns 18 Sunday, faces felony charges for striking a school employee and resisting arrest without violence, authorities said. BSO initially reported the student faced charges of resisting arrest with violence.

The student's sister said he threw a piece of bread.

"Everyone was throwing things and they told him to move away," she said. "Two of the security guards from Cypress tackled him, apparently, and they were ripping his shirt and they were throwing him everywhere."

One Cypress Bay student said the situation "turned just absolutely insane."

"Everybody just started throwing food and 15 minutes later I see the cops showing up," that student said.

According to another student, the fight began when someone started throwing apples. The students then moved outside to the courtyard and formed a giant circle where they were throwing water bottles and other types of food, he said.

The students said the scene was absolute chaos.

"It turned into a mosh pit for some reason in the middle of the riots and me and a bunch of friends got punched in the face and we started punching people," another student said. "They started chanting, 'Only at Cypress,' it was crazy."

Other students said a rivalry with Western High School sparked it.

"I think Twitter had a lot to do with it this morning because Western was talking about having a food fight and they're our biggest rivals, so I feel that Cypress wanted to do something bigger," one student said.

Some parents are saying the situation could have been controlled.

"Cypress Bay has at least five thousand students, and they need more security measures for one thing, but they need people in the cafeteria to not have this happen," mother Jan Silverman said.

The Cypress Bay principal is reviewing video and trying to determine who started the fight, said Broward School Board officials. It is still too early to determine whether or not there will be suspensions, they said.

Fort Worth police are investigating a report of improper photography, possibly involving children at Mayfest.

The incident reportedly happened Thursday night at the opening night of the popular annual spring festival at Trinity Park in Fort Worth.

Investigators are releasing few details of what may have happened.

"In our effort to maintain the integrity of this ongoing investigation, the FWPD cannot release any other details on the case at this time," Sgt. Kelly Peel noted in a release to NBC 5.

Police have identified the suspect, according to the release. A police incident report states that the suspect is a male, but does not indicate an age of the suspect. Police will not confirm whether officers on the scene confiscated the suspect's camera.

A representative from Mayfest had no comment Friday about this particular, reported incident.

Carrie Capel, a member of the Mayfest Board of Directors, said that the festival features a large contingent of both uniformed and non-uniformed Fort Worth police officers, including officers positioned in portable watchtowers, for this very reason.

"I think that we, as Mayfest, we invite our community out here," Capel said. "And our community wants to know they're going to be safe while they're out here. So therefore we put quite a bit of effort and energy into keeping those patrons safe."

Rick Henson, of Burleson, attended Mayfest Friday night with his wife and daughter. He told NBC 5 he felt safe.

"Well you know you always have your guard up a little when there are this many people around," Henson said. "But we felt [like] it's a lot of fun."

In West, Baseball Is Welcome Distraction

advertisement

West High School's baseball team is headed to the state playoffs next week -- a welcome diversion that gives the small town something to cheer about after the fatal fertilizer plant explosion two weeks ago.

West beat Melissa 11-2 in a warm-up game Friday night.

"The town has put that on the boys. They're like, 'Win for us, win for us, help us out, '" said Tina Paxton, a West High School teacher and the mother of the team's third baseman. "They're not used to the attention. But they're playing for the town and themselves right now."

In Ennis, where Friday night's practice game was played, strangers turned out to support West.

As team members got off their bus, people shouted "Good luck" and held up signs saying "Go West" and "Keep Smiling."

At first, the players weren't sure what to think.

"I'm just totally shocked," outfielder Coy Schier said. "This is totally surprising, and it's great. It's fantastic to see. People come out to support somebody they don't even know."

They try to focus on baseball, but the reminders are constant.

At the beginning of the game, the public address announcer from Ennis spoke of the tragedy.

"We would like to send our heartfelt sympathies to those in West, Texas," he said. "We all know the devastation that happened there a few weeks ago."

Another player, outfielder Holden Sykora, said he is happy to play.

"It was a close-knit community already, but this -- the tragedy that happened -- is definitely bringing people that much closer," he said.

West also made it to the state playoffs last year but lost in the final game.

This year, the town is rallying behind the team like never before.

"We're playing some pretty good baseball, and it's the perfect time to do that," Schier said.

Mix Governor Rick Perry, a Ted Nugent song, a military style rifle and n egg exploding during target practice  together and you get the most talked about introduction video at this week's National Rifle Association's meeting in Houston.

The short video played just before Perry took the stage to a welcome applause from the crowd.

The video shows Perry taking aim at an egg from about 100 yards out with a LaRue Tactical rifle - a company that recently opened up shop in Texas.

The video then shows Perry hitting metal targets like a marksman.

The video got quite a reaction online, and not all of it was good.

The responses on Twitter ranged from folks saying Perry's video did nothing but "promote and excite the already gun-thirsty and violent society" to others saying "I love Rick Perry! He should be President...great guy."

Some political pundits accused Perry of shooting the same type of weapon used in the Newtown, Conn. school shooting.

Tom Mannewitz with Target Master Indoor Shooting center, a Garland gun shop and range, said the gun looks like an AR-15 and has the same frame, but is different and shoots a different caliber bullet.

2 Recognized for Saving Man Trapped in Burning Van

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 03 Mei 2013 | 22.29

Thursday the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport Department of Public Safety recognized Kristy Gish and Walter Vaughn for their efforts in saving the life of TJ Griffin, a paraplegic who was trapped in his burning van at DFW airport.

Gish, Vaughn and Griffin were reunited Thursday when Vaughn and Gish were presented with the Citizens Recognition Award for their bravery in helping a citizen in need. The three told their story on the same day video of the ordeal was released to the public.

After the fire broke out, Griffin said he started yelling for help.  He said Vaughn came pretty quickly but added, "That time, it seemed like forever.  Cause I could see the flames just coming up.  He looked at me and said, 'It's OK. We're good. I'll get you out.'"

Despite his assertion, Vaughn confessed he wasn't completely confident he was going to be able to save Griffin.

"After looking at it and seeing the fire, that's when we went to the next step. We've got to physically take him out. There was one point where the image came in my mind, where I thought, 'You're going to have to step away, but it went away and I went right back to what I was doing," Vaughn said.

As for Griffin's confidence, he said, "I thought I was dead. I thought this is it. I could see the flames above my head, and I said, 'Pull me.' And he said, 'Here we go.' He bear hugged me and pulled me out."

Gish gets emotional when talking about that scary day.

"Burning alive is a big fear of everybody. I said, 'Just get him out and get him safe,'" Gish recalled.

They pulled Griffin out of the car, but soon realized the danger was far from over as they began to hear the sound of shattering glass.

"Right then, that's when we literally heard all the windows explode. So they grabbed me and took me 10 feet further away," Griffin said.

Vaughn said something just kicked-in that he wasn't aware was inside of him.

"Situations come up and you just react, and I really don't know how to explain it. It was just a situation and you gauged it and went from there," Vaughn said.

Needless to say, Griffin was appreciative.

"These are the most amazing people." Griffin said, "People just don't do that.  People don't just run into a flaming van to try and help someone out."

Griffin said he's not going to live his life in fear, but in addition to taking other precautions he will have a fire extinguisher in his van at all times.

Suspect Caught in Bedford Apartment Slayings

A man suspected of killing his ex-girlfriend and her son at their apartment near Fort Worth is in an Oklahoma jail. Bedford police say Cedric Ricks was caught in Garvin County last night, hours after Roxann Sanchez and her eight-year-old son Anthony Figueroa were found stabbed to death.

Apartment Stabbing Suspect Arrested in Okla.

Oklahoma police have arrested a man Bedford police say fatally stabbed the mother of his child and her 8-year-old son Wednesday night before fleeing the state.

More Photos and Videos

Oklahoma State Police arrested a man overnight Wednesday that Bedford police say fatally stabbed the mother of his child and her 8-year-old son before fleeing the state in her car that same evening.

At about 8:40 p.m. Wednesday, police were called to an apartment complex on the 1400 block of Park Place Boulevard where a family member reported 38-year-old Cedric Ricks had attacked several people, including children.

When officers arrived, they found a woman, now identified as 30-year-old Roxann Diana Sanchez, and an 8-year-old boy, Anthony Reyes Figueroa, dead.  A 12-year-old boy was also injured in the attack, but survived, and was transported to Children's Medical Center in critical condition. Doctors said the boy suffered a brain injury in the violent attack, but remain hopeful he'll survive.

An 8-month-old child, now in the custody of Child Protective Services, was also in the apartment at the time of the stabbings and was not injured.

Police said Ricks and Sanchez were an estranged couple that had one child together, the 8-month-old found unharmed.

As officers investigated the scene, they learned the woman's car was missing and put out a multi-state alert for officers to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

About three hours later, shortly after 11 p.m., officers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol stopped and arrested Ricks for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle about 70 miles north of the Texas-Oklahoma border in Garvin County.

While being held in the Garvin County Jail, three arrest warrants were issued for Ricks, two for murder and one for attempted murder. Each murder warrant had a $2 million bond while the attempted murder warrant had a bond amount of $500,000.

Ricks was arraigned on the charges Thursday afternoon.

Police are now working with Oklahoma authorities to transfer Ricks back to Texas, but he is fighting extradition. To get Ricks back in Texas, the Garvin County District Attorney will have to ask Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin to get a governor's warrant and force the extradition.  A judge advised the Garvin County Sheriff's Department that process may take as long as two months.

NBC 5 learned Thursday afternoon that a protective order that expired in January was the result of an assault that took place in Nov. 2012 where police said Ricks choked Sanchez.  After that incident, Child Protective Services became involved to determine the welfare of the children.

According to an affidavit obtained by NBC 5, Ricks called a cousin and admitted to killing Sanchez and her son.

The affidavit reads:

"Cedric Ricks informed her that he admitted to the stabbings. The witness related that Cedric Ricks told her that he was, 'hurt,' 'needed stitches,' and was 'cut up.'"

"The witness further stated that Cedric Ricks told her he was, 'Sorry,' 'Couldn't take it anymore,' and was 'Stressed,' and stated that 'Nobody loves me,' and that he was, 'Not going to jail.'"

Investigators were able to track Rick's cell phone to Ardmore, Okla.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol was able to stop Ricks for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and arrest him.

According to Judy Ramos with the Hurst-Euless-Bedford independent School District, the 8-year-old was in the third grade at Spring Garden Elementary and the 12-year-old is a sixth grader.

Both children have attended the school since 2011 and, in a letter sent home to parents Thursday, the principal said the boys' grandmother worked at the school.

NBC 5's Amanda Guerra, Ray Villeda, Shane Allen, Greg Janda and Frank Heinz contributed to this report.  Editor's note: A previous version of this story said Bedford police arrested Cedric Ricks.  He was arrested by Oklahoma Highway Patrol. We regret the error.

Double-Arm Amputee Taking on Ironman

On Saturday Hector Picard will compete in his first full Ironman competition – and try to become the first double-arm amputee to start and finish an Ironman. He talks about what made him not quit after the electrical accident that cost him his arms, discusses his triathlon "addiction," and shares some inspirational words.

Latin heartthrob, Cristian de la Fuente stops by the set to talk to Roxanne Vargas about this years Nautica South Beach Triathlon and his efforts to help St. Jude.

More Photos and Videos

A Florida triathlon athlete who is a double-arm amputee says someone stole his custom bike early Thursday morning.

"It's only fitted, it's modified for me. You can't sell it. You can't ride it. You can't do anything with it," Hector Picard said. "So by stealing it, they are doing a lot more damage than they really know."

Picard, 46, who has completed 73 triathlons in the past four years, said his special bike is worth $12,000 – but it's worthless to anyone besides him. It's a Seven Axiom titanium road bike, he said.

"It's definitely obvious. The handlebars are different, the brakes are different," he said. "The body of the bike, the frame, is completely modified. I mean, a regular person won't be able to use it."

Picard was involved in a work-related electrical accident in 1992.

"I received an electrical shock 21 years ago," he said. "Thirteen thousands volts of electricity went through my body and caused the amputations and the burns."

The accident left him in a coma for four weeks. His entire right arm and half of his left one were amputated.

Cristián de la Fuente Takes on Triathlon To Help St. Jude's Hospital

But Picard didn't quit – and now his mission in life is to inspire. Last August he became the first double-arm amputee to start and finish an Ironman race, and he has completed two more Ironman competitions since then.

On June 8 he will set off on a 3,200-mile bike journey to Spokane, Washington to raise money for a little boy with no arms.

But with his bike stolen, Picard has to turn to his old bike. Picard said it is a lot more difficult for him to use – not to mention the hours he will have to spend repairing it.

"I struggle a little more. I'm still going to do it," he said. "I'm not going to let anything like this stop me."

NBC 6 Videos

Picard isn't looking for donations, just his bike. Anyone with information is asked to call Fort Lauderdale Police.

He said he won't let his latest challenge slow him down.

"I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it," Picard said. "God willing, as long as I'm healthy, bike or no bike, I'm going to do this, and it would just be nice to have that bike back."

For more information on Picard and his cross-country ride, see his website, dontstopliving.org.

Teacher Buys Student "Fifty Shades" for Reading Class

advertisement

A Philadelphia mother wants her son's high school teacher fired after he bought the teen the erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey" for in-class reading.

Maya Ladson says she was shocked to find a copy of the racy read in her 14-year-old's book bag back on March 9. That shock turned to outrage when she found out how he got the book.

"The minute I found out about it, it raised concern," the mother told NBC10.com Thursday. "This is not OK to me. This is major."

Ladson's son, who is a 9th grade student at Eastern University Academy Charter School in Philadelphia, asked for and was given the book by his teacher and adviser Philip Aidoo.

According to the school, Aidoo asked students for a list of books they would like to read during an independent reading period. Ladson's son's requested "Fifty Shades of Grey." Aidoo then went online and ordered the book.

Ladson acknowledges that her son asked for the book.

"It clearly states on the cover, that the book is for mature audiences and has high sexual content," Ladson said. "This was a 100-percent act of negligence. There should never be pornographic material purchased and distributed to a student by a school teacher."

Eastern University Academy Charter School Chief Operating Officer Yvonne Turner calls the teacher's actions a mistake.

"Unfortunately, Mr. Aidoo did not have an awareness of this popular book and ordered it with his own money," she said. Turner says Aidoo also ordered books for other students, all of which were G-rated.

"I find it highly unlikely that a teacher who teaches reading and has a classroom for sustained silent reading period is unaware of contents of material that he's giving to the students, let alone the material being pornographic material," Ladson told NBC10.com.

Once Aidoo's purchase was brought to the school's attention by Ladson, officials immediately launched an investigation, according to Turner.

Officials met with Ladson and Aidoo and made a recommendation of action against the teacher, which the school didn't disclose. Ladson said she was not satisfied with the recommendation and filed a grievance with the school's board of trustees. They heard the case and decided Wednesday to suspend the teacher for one week without pay.

Ladson says a suspension is not enough and wants Aidoo removed from the school.

"We all agree that it was a very serious mistake, however, it does not warrant a termination," Turner said.

After Ladson told officials about the Grey incident, the school held a meeting with the parents of all the teacher's students to notify them about the situation, according to Turner. Aidoo has taught math and advised at the 7th-12th grade school for several years.

"We heard nothing but high praises and support for Mr. Aidoo," Turner said. "We have to deal with these things in a fair and impartial way which the school has attempted to do."

Ladson says her son's education has been compromised. Turner says the school is putting together a plan to move the 14-year-old to another class for the next trimester. The school has also enacted a policy that officials must now approve any purchase intended for students, she says.

The school has been on break for the past month. Ladson says when classes resume on Monday, she plans to protest outside the school with other parents.

Home in Ellis County Destroyed by Fire

A home in Ellis County was destroyed by fire overnight. Wind and no nearby fire hydrants made battling the blaze difficult.

More Photos and Videos

Whipping winds and a lack of water made putting out a fire at a Ellis County home on Friday morning a tougher battle than usual.

Crews didn't have access to fire hydrants within a half-mile of the home on Dixie Lane near Waxahachie, complicating the fight. Neighbors said their concern is how long it took firefighters to arrive.

The homeowner made it out safely, but he's lost everything.  There's just a shell left of the brick house.  A car parked in what used to be the garage is torched.

"It was a raging inferno within 15 minutes.  The whole thing was engulfed," said neighbor Dixie Loving.

Loving woke up to her neighbor knocking on her door just after midnight.  The home across the street was up in the flames.  The man who lives there tells Loving that he'd been sleeping when the power went out.

"The circuit breaker must have tripped because of the fire.  Then, there shouldn't be this glow. So, they left with what they had on, which wasn't much," said Loving.
The flames forced the homeowner out into the cold as strong winds fueled the fire.

Loving called 911.

"We were all standing around.  There was nothing we could do, but wait," said Loving.

The rural neighborhood to the north of Waxahachie is covered by the Ellis County Emergency Services District 6 Volunteer Fire Department.

Waxahachie Fire Chief Ricky Boyd said that the city also responded to help, along with three other departments.

Loving believes it took about 45 minutes for crews to arrive.

"It was 45 minutes before.  The sheriff got here 15 minutes before the fire department.  Seems a little long to me.  Maybe I don't understand how volunteer fire departments work," said Loving.

When crews pulled up, the nearest fire hydrant is two streets away.  A county tanker had to bring in water.

The Waxahachie chief said response times are always a concern in and outside of the city, but limited water access is part of living in a rural area.

"It would have been better to break a window and put the hose inside.  At least it was something.  By the time help got here, it was gone," says Loving.

NBC 5 has put in an open records request with the county for fire crews exact response times.

The fire marshal said the fire started in the back porch area of the home and hopes to know exactly what sparked the fire by the end of the day on Friday.

The homeowner told neighbors he didn't have insurance.

A solar-powered plane - energized by the power of the sun - took off just as dawn broke Friday morning from Mountain View's Moffett Field on its first cross-country tour, bound for New York as its final destination.

Considered the world's most advanced sun-powered plane, which only travels about 30 or 40 mph, the Solar Impulse has already taken successful test runs over California's Bay Area.

The point of the powering a plane with 12,000 photovoltaic cells, all powered by the sun, is to show the world that it can be done, and to inspire engineers to look for advances in clean tech.

"We're here to inspire," Swiss creator André Borschberg told NBC Bay Area before an earlier flight, adding that that he hoped this science and technology - and imagination - would trickle down to the "younger generation."

The plane has the wing span of a 747, but the weight of the mid-sized car. It can only carry one passenger who has to stay awake through the entire flight. On the longer flights, the pilot is allowed to take naps eight minutes at a time. There is no auto-pilot.

The cockpit seat is the only seat in the plane, but it has a dual purpose and it equipped with a toilet.

The Solar Impulse was designed to show the potential of solar power. Its creators say it will never replace commercial flights.  The plane reaches a top speed of 43 mph and holds the record for  altitude for solar-powered planes at 30,300 feet, according to the company's  website.

The Solar Impulse will first stop in Phoenix, and then head to Dallas, St. Louis, Washington, D.C.,  and New York. Each flight leg will take 20 to 25 hours, with 10-day stops planned in each city.

A 17-year-old boy will celebrate his high school graduation month thanks to a 5.5-months pregnant, off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy who rescued him from the bottom of a lake.

Deputy Jenna Underwood-Nunez was having dinner with her family in the Silverwood Lake campground in San Bernardino County when she heard screaming coming from the lake. A glance toward the water revealed frantic splashing about 200 yards away from the shore.

Authorities revealed the details of their colleague's harrowing April 27 rescue on Thursday.

"Placing herself and her unborn child at potential risk, Deputy Underwood sprang into action and immediately ran toward the drowning victim," Underwood's department said a statement.

Fully dressed, Underwood swam about 200 yards into the water to find the teen had already become fully submerged 15 feet below the surface. He was laying on lake bed.

Underwood dove to the bottom, pulled the victim up and then to shore, where she performed four cycles of CPR before the teen regained consciousness.

The boy was airlifted to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

A six-year veteran of the force, Underwood works at the Century Regional Detention Facility.

Home Burns in 1,700-Acre Summit Fire in Calif.

A wind-driven wildfire that threatened homes in Southern California's Riverside County forced evacuations and road closures Wednesday afternoon, destroying at least one home.

At least 425 firefighters, 46 engine companies, 16 fire crews, six helicopters and six air tankers were sent to control the 1,700-acre two-headed blaze near near Banning, Calif., which sent up thick towers of smoke.

The massive blaze, dubbed the "Summit Fire," was at 0 percent containment as of 4:30 p.m. The fire was still moving quickly on its "right flank," where it was headed toward Cherry Valley and Oak Glen, fire Chief John Hawkins of CAL Fire's Riverside Unit told NBC 4 Southern California.

At least one home burned on Mesa Street at Sunset Avenue (map).

About 500 people had been evacuated, Hawkins said, and had been moved to aid centers.

At least one firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze. Hawkins said the first responder suffered burns to the face.

Regional air quality regulators issued a smoke advisory for the area around Banning, meaning people should avoid unnecessary outdoor activities anywhere smoke can be seen or smelled.

Hawkins said more crews were being called to battle the blaze in the rolling foothills and canyons.

"We are bringing in everything we can to get a hold on this fire," he said, adding that the area had very difficult access.

Hawkins said there are two "heads" to the fire: one north of Banning that is heading west toward an area north of the neighboring city of Beaumont; and another in the rugged foothills headed in the direction of the apple-growing community of Oak Glen.

Winds began to slow down about 6 p.m.

"We're looking a lot better," Hawkins said at the time, adding that the blaze is still "nowhere near contained."

The Banning Police Department evacuated residents on Indian School Lane near Eighth Street. Roads were closed on Wilson Street between San Gorgonio Road and Highland Springs Avenue. Residents in the Highland Springs Mobile Home Park also have been evacuated.

Banning PD asked residents in the Bench area just north of Banning to remain in their homes because surrounding roads were blocked by fire.

Evacuated residents were ordered to go to the Banning Community Center at 789 N. San Gorgonia Avenue. Evacuation centers for animals were set up in nearby San Jacinto and Beaumont.

Crews from Riverside County Fire Department and CAL Fire worked with multiple agencies — including from as far away as Orange County — to control the wildfire that started near North San Gorgonio Avenue and Summit Drive in Banning (map).

The blaze was reported at 12:38 p.m. at 10 acres. By 6 p.m., it had grown to consume at least 1,700 acres.

"We had an abnormally early start (to the fire season)," Hawkins said. "This is very concerning."

Areas of Southern California on Wednesday were under a red flag warning, or increased wildfire danger, which indicates a dangerous combination of high winds, hot temperatures and low humidity.

NBC 4 Southern California's Tony Shin, Jacob Rascon and Melissa Pamer contributed to this article.

Mayor of West: "We're Gonna Rebuild"

advertisement

West Mayor Tommy Muska is continously working to rebuild his town.

These days Muska spends his time attending funerals for friends, attending daily city council briefings, speaking time with any one of the dozens of residents whose homes were destroyed in the fertilizer plant explosion that rocked his town two weeks ago.

Muska is applying for emergency aid from both the state and federal level.

Muska sat down with NBC 5 Wednesday night to discuss his town's recovery.

"They didn't teach this in mayor's school," Muska said about handling a crisis the magnitude of which his town is going through." It's a learning process."

The April 17 explosion killed 15 people, injured approximately 200 more and destroyed many of the homes in a five-block area surrounding the West Fertilizer plant.

As a volunteer firefighter in West, Muska was on his way to the plant to help put out the fire that preceded the explosion. The force from the explosion knocked his hat off of his head, Muska said.

Muska said there's too much work to be done to reflect.

But early Wednesday he did just that, and posted his thoughts on the city's website for all to see.

This is an excerpt from his letter:

I know you have heard me say over and over that it will be ok…I say that with all my heart and soul…knowing full well the great citizen of West have the resilience, dedication, love for each other and faith in the almighty God that makes us so unique and special.  We will be ok… we will rebuild this town… we will be better and stronger because of it.

"It comes from the heart," Muska said about what he wrote. "And I know these people and they know me and we're gonna get through it. We're gonna get through it together."

Muska said the next achievable hurdle his town needs to clear is the process of tearing down the damaged buildings and starting over.

"This town is not gonna die on my watch," Muska said. "We're gonna rebuild."

A pastor in Corinth was arrested at his home Wednesday on charges of attempted sexual performance of a child.

Pastor Jeffrey Dale Williams of The Church of Corinth is accused of attempting to persuade a child under the age of 18 to remove clothing and show herself completely naked, according to Corinth police.

The charges against Williams are a third degree felony.

Williams was booked into Denton County Jail. He was released on a $10,000 bond Wednesday night.

Police say the alleged incident did not happen at the church, but at a private residence. When asked whose house, the officer declined to comment.

Captain Greg Wilkerson with the Corinth Police Department says Child Protective Services alerted officers about allegations of sexual abuse.

Wilkerson says officers followed up with the tip. Detectives also got their hands on a piece of recorded evidence which helped them get a warrant for an arrest.

"We were actually able to obtain an audio recording of the actual event and after locating the victim and interviewing her, she was able to corroborate what we already had heard on the tape," Wilkerson said.

Church members were shocked to hear the news of the arrest.

Tina Martin attends the Church of Corinth. She's known Williams for more than four years, and she can't believe the allegations against him.

"From what I know about Pastor Jeff Williams is that he is a God-fearing man who does everything to teach his congregation, his town and his people everything about God," Martin said.

The Church of Corinth released the following official statement early Thursday morning:

"We have no knowledge of nor any reason to suspect any inappropriate behavior. We intend to and will fully investigate the allegations, and we will fully cooperate with the authorities. Our prayers go out to this family of our Church."

Corinth police say the investigation is ongoing and are asking for any additional victims or witnesses to contact Corinth PD at 940-498-2017.

No additional information has been provided at this time.

Calif. Hiker Rescued After Massive, $160K Search Charged with Drug Possession

Taxpayers Likely to Foot $160K Bill for OC Hiker Rescue

The Costa Mesa teens who went missing in Trabuco Canyon could be responsible for the $160,000 it cost Orange County officials to find them. Dozens of deputies and firefighters searched around the clock for the hiking duo. Nicholas Cendoya, 19, said he didn't want his parents to be burdened with the cost, but if it came to it, he would help out. Vikki Vargas reports from Santa Ana for the NBC4 News at 6 p.m. on April 30, 2013.

Lost Hiker Thought He Was Going to Die

Nicholas Cendoya, who was lost in an Orange County forest for four days, said he didn't know whether he'd make it out alive. Jane Yamamoto reports for the NBC4 News at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, 2013.

One of two teen hikers who got lost in the wilderness in Southern California, prompting a massive five-day search effort that cost more than $160,000, has been charged with the possession of methamphetamine found during the hike.

Authorities found an illegal substance in the car in which Nicolas Cendoya, 19, had traveled to the trailhead in the Trabuco Canyon area of Cleveland National Forest, Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Gail Krause said Wednesday.

A felony charge of possession of a controlled substance was filed against Cendoya on Tuesday, according to Farrah Emami, a spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney's office.

The substance was 497 milligrams of methamphetamine, which was found in his car April 2, when sheriff's deputies were looking for information on him, Emami said.

That amount of methamphetamine is likely to be a supply rather that a dosage that could be consumed at one time, according to NBC4 Los Angeles' Dr. Bruce Hensel.

Authorities had said that they could only attempt to recover the $160,000 cost for the massive search for Cendoya and his companion, 18-year-old Kyndall Jack, if a criminal charge was filed against the hikers.

The cost of the multiagency search was released Tuesday and included the services of six agencies.

Cendoya, who spoke to NBC4 on Tuesday and said he would help pay back the cost of the search if needed, was not being held, Emami said. Cendoya said he didn't want his parents to be burdened with the search costs, which he called "insane."

Asked on Tuesday if he was on drugs during the hike, Cendoya said "absolutely not."

Cendoya and Jack, both of Costa Mesa, had headed onto the popular trails of Holy Jim Canyon in the Cleveland National Forest on Easter only to get separated at night. They had entered the wilderness with a single water bottle and no warm clothing.

Lost for several days, the two were found separately by rescuers in dense brush on April 3 and April 4.

A reserve deputy was seriously injured during Kyndall's rescue after he fell 60 feet and hit his head.

Both Jack and Kyndall were found dehydrated, disoriented and covered in cuts and bruises -- but they suffered no major injuries. Each said they had hallucinated through much of their time in the steep canyon area.

"I was in lucid dreams and hallucinations for days. I could see the helicopters flying over me every day. When the firefighters came up to me, I couldn't even believe it," Cendoya said after his ordeal. "We weren't meant to die."

He is set to be arraigned in Santa Ana Superior Court on May 22, Emami said.

NBC4's Ryan Bourgard and Vikki Vargas contributed to this article.

An Illinois teenager accused of trying to join an al-Qaida-affiliated group in Syria returns to federal court Thursday.

A judge is expected to decide whether Abdella Tounisi will await trial in jail or at home. Tounisi faces one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, a felony.

Tounisi's family says they understand the heightened concern after the Boston Marathin bombing, but they believe their son is innocent. Federal authorities, though, say Abdella Tounisi is a threat and should remain behind bars.

The 18-year-old is accused of planning to join an al-Qaida group in Syria. He was living with his family in Aurora, Ill. when he was arrested last month as he prepared to board a plane to Turkey at O'Hare International Airport.

According to the FBI, Tounisi was discovered through a sham website claiming to connect users with extremist groups. Authorities say Tounisi wrote to an FBI agent posing as a terrorist recruiter saying he was willing to die but had no fighting experience.

Prosecutors also allege he is friends with Adel Daoud, charged with trying to detonate what he thought was a bomb outside a Chicago bar last year, and was initially involved in Daoud's plot.

Tounisi's father said after his son's arrest that Abdella was looking for an escape and wouldn't hurt anyone.

Tounisi has yet to enter a plea. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Dozens of High School Students Suspended Over Twerking Video

Twerking Suspensions Reaction

Students and parents respond to the Scripps Ranch High School scandal involving a twerking video shot and edited on school grounds and school equipment. NBC 7's Nicole Gonzales reports.

More Photos and Videos

Dozens of San Diego area high school students have been suspended and banned from prom or commencement because of a video showing them twerking, according to one parent.

The video, created recently by students in a media class at Scripps Ranch High School, shows teenaged girls performing the dance move while doing handstands to a YG song.

Thirty-two students danced and one student used school property to videotape the group outside class during 6th period.

Later, the student used school editing equipment to add music and post the clip to YouTube.

As a result, all 33 students were suspended as of Tuesday through the end of the week, the parent told NBC 7 San Diego.

For those unfamiliar with the trend, twerking involves popping of the hips in a suggestive dance move. Singer Miley Cyrus recently posted a twerking video and talked about the move with Ryan Seacrest.

San Diego Unified School District spokesperson Jack Brandais refused to comment on the suspension saying the district will not discuss student discipline.

Brandais forwarded the specific section of the district website regarding the suspension appeal process.

One Scripps Ranch HS student posted an update via Twitter, "Suspended, banned from prom, and prevented from walking at graduation all because of an awesome twerk video. I don't understand."

NBC 7 San Diego spoke to one of the teenagers disciplined because of the video and he told us that may not be the case.

"The seniors involved are on senior review and have to ask for their prom and graduation back in front of a panel," the teenager told NBC 7.

On Tuesday, another student posted on Twitter, "To show support for everybody getting suspended, we should all twerk at once at lunch #freethetwerkteam."

The Scripps Ranch HS student handbook specifically outlines its sexual harassment policy prohibiting "verbal, visual, or physical conduct of a sexual nature made by someone from or in the educational setting."

Students must sign a page in the handbook that states: "At Scripps Ranch High school there is zero tolerance for students who cause major disruptions at school or school activities. Any student who causes a major disruption will receive a five (5) day suspension, a possible new school placement and may be arrested."

Seniors may be denied attendance at prom or walking at graduation if they have committed a "zero tolerance infraction" the guide states.

The parent who spoke with NBC 7 San Diego felt the school was not uniform in handing out punishment.

The mother said the school should have used this as a teaching moment to remind students that when a person is videotaped, he or she never knows where it's going to go.

Apartment Stabbing Suspect Arrested in Okla.

advertisement

Oklahoma State Police arrested a man overnight that Bedford police say fatally stabbed the mother of his child and her 8-year-old son Wednesday night before fleeing the state in her car.

Investigators said there was a protective order issued in the past, but that the order had expired in January of this year.

Garvin County Undersheriff Jim Mullett said Ricks is expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon.

NBC 5's Amanda Guerra and Shane Allen contributed to this report.  Editor's note: A previous version of this story said Bedford police arrested Cedric Ricks.  He was arrested by Oklahoma Highway Patrol. We regret the error.

Child's Rape Investigated at Dallas Middle School

Some Dallas middle school students are afraid to return to class after chilling claims surface of a sexual assault on campus.

More Photos and Videos

Dallas police are investigating after a middle school student said she was sexually assaulted at gunpoint in a school bathroom.

The Thomas A. Edison Learning Center student said she was raped inside a girl's bathroom after school on Monday. The girl told police a man followed her into the bathroom, forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her at about 5 p.m.

The girl ran to get help at a day care across the street. Michelle Brown, the day care owner and the parent of an Edison student, said the child's pants were ripped. She was clearly traumatized and very distraught, Brown said.

"It was just very, very devastating," Brown said.

Brown called 911 and the girl's mother, who was already at the school to pick up her child and had been unable to locate her.

"[The] mom, she just collapsed in the parking lot," Brown said.

The Dallas Independent School District said that all of the school's doors are locked by 4 p.m. The district said it reviewed the school's security camera footage but did not find video of anyone matching the description of the attacker.

Many parents and students didn't hear about it until they dropped off their children Tuesday morning.

"When I heard, I was crying," eighth-grader Denisha McDonald said. "I'm scared to even go to school."

"I'm like, 'Wow,' and thinking, 'Should I even send my daughter to school today?'" mother Jamie Lewis said.

DISD said it learned of the allegations Monday night, too late to notify parents before Tuesday.

"The district learned of the allegation around 7 p.m. Because of the time that the allegation was made, it was impossible to get a letter out to parents last night. A note will likely be sent home with students today as more details become available," DISD spokesman Jon Dahlander said.

The school sent the following letter home to parents Tuesday.

Dear Parents and Edison school community,

The safety of our students is our top priority here at Thomas A. Edison Middle Learning Center. When there are issues of concern, we feel it is important to share them with our parents and our school community so we can all work together to ensure that students and staff are safe.

The purpose of this letter is to notify you of an incident being investigated by the Dallas Police Department. An allegation was made yesterday that one of our students was assaulted on campus after school, and we are cooperating fully with this investigation.

I ask everyone to keep our fellow Eagle and the family in your thoughts and prayers. A crisis unit is available for any student or adult needing counseling regarding this matter. In addition, extra security will remain on campus.

Again, safety is our primary concern, therefore we are asking that students be picked up on time each day, that they wear their ID badges at all times, and that any suspicious people on campus or behavior be reported to school authorities immediately. Our staff is working diligently with the police department to ensure our school provides a safe environment for our students.

Thank you for your continued support of Thomas Edison Middle Learning Center. If you have additional questions or information you need to pass along, please contact me at (972) 794-4100.

Sincerely,
D. Spurlock, Principal.

The school has increased security has crisis counselors on campus to help students cope with the attack.

Imagine spending big bucks for a personalized dating service only to end up with bad dates and a lot less money.  That's what one Fort Worth woman named Carol Carrillo said happened to her, and NBC 5 Investigates learned she's not alone.

Carrillo is smart, attractive, athletic and a sports fanatic, but the 40-something flight attendant is still single.

"I'm an outgoing person except when it comes to my personal life.  I meet someone that I'm interested in and I freeze," said Carrillo. So she turned to Dallas Singles, a matchmaking service she found online.

On its website, the service promises to provide an extensive search and screening process -- personal service Carrillo thought would be worth the price.  After what she described as a lengthy intake process, she signed the contract.

Carrillo said she suspected she'd regret her decision when the employee ran her credit card then immediately told her the buyer's remorse law didn't apply to her membership in Dallas Singles.

"My heart sunk," said Carrillo.  She had signed a year membership and was charged $2,200.

Contract Promised 15 Matches

The contract promised matches with 15 men in a year.

Her first match was with a man who, she said, on their first and only date, openly expressed his disdain for people who were not of his social standing.

"I found his opinions of people prejudicial, not very nice," said Carrillo.

Her next match was a cyclist who Carrillo said was painfully shy.  She said phone chat was a struggle.  When he did finally open up "he talked for 20 minutes about ripping his bicycle pants," said Carrillo, giggling.

Carrillo went on to describe her first, and only, phone conversation with a third match.

"One person, without mentioning his name, literally told me he joined Dallas Singles because people judged him on his looks.  And it was hard to sleep with women, and so he joined this because it was easier to get on women," said Carrillo.  Even though his profile boasts a culinary degree, he told her he'd actually he'd just taken some cooking classes in Houston, was unemployed and lived with his mother and brother.

Finally, Carrillo had had enough.

"Now, I just want my money back," said Carrillo.

Efforts to Get a Refund

But getting her money back has not been easy.  After months of unanswered phone calls and certified letters, Carrillo called NBC 5 Investigates.  We called Dallas Singles.  The owner, Ted Law, declined to talk to us on camera on repeated occasions.  But minutes after our call, he reached out to Carrillo and later left a voicemail for her promising to give her all her money back.

But the paperwork she received said her refund was conditional.  She had to agree to "not to disparage Dallas Singles, Fort Worth Singles or Singles International or its affiliates, clients or personnel in any way in the future."

"I'd rather lose all my money than not fight these people. They haven't given me any of what was promised," said Carrillo.

She's not alone in her complaints.  The owners of Dallas Singles, Law and, his wife Rachel, filed for bankruptcy and are defendants in a 2012 class action lawsuit relating to their former company, another match-making service.

According to the lawsuit, plaintiffs claimed not only did they fail to make promised matches, but also they were deceptive.  They displayed pictures of couples depicted as success stories, but plaintiffs said those happy couples were actually employees of the company.

A settlement is under negotiation.

Law insisted Carol "didn't give the service a chance." He insisted his business leads to happy matches.  In the meantime, Carrillo isn't waiting for Law to refund her money.  She said she contacted her credit card company, worked with them on a dispute and ultimately got the money back.

She advised anyone in a similar situation to read the fine print and not make an impulsive decision.  As for her quest for love, she's not giving up yet.

"I'd like to meet someone the regular way, but what is the regular way anymore?" asked Carrillo.

Eyes Turn to Crowded Sky Above LA After Midair Collision

advertisement

The midair collision of two planes over Westlake Village in California this week points out that no matter how big the sky, it's rarely wide open. And the skies over Southern California are among the most crowded in the country.

Part of the reason for that is the sheer number of airports in the Los Angeles area. From the biggest ones like LAX and John Wayne to smaller ones like Hawthorne and El Monte, there are 30 airports in the area.

From those airports are millions of takeoffs and landings. In 2009, Van Nuys Airport earned the title of "world's busiest general aviation airport" with 400,000 takeoffs and landings that year.

The recession and the high cost of fuel has helped reduce that number, but the latest statistics available show there have been more than 61,000 takeoffs and landings in Van Nuys in the first three months of this year. That averages nearly 700 takeoffs and landings each day from a single Southland airport.

Both planes involved in Tuesday's midair collision took off from Santa Monica Airport, where records show there were nearly 8,500 takeoffs and landings in January, with more than 8,700 in February.

A tremendous number of aircraft are in the sky at any one moment.

Larry Welk has flown planes and helicopters over California for more than 20 years, including the NBC4 helicopter.

"Airspace continues to get more and more dense," said Welk, who added that LA airspace is "complex." Pilots have to contend not only with substantial traffic, but other issues like terrain.

There have been notable midair collisions in the past five years in Southern California.

In May 2009, two planes collided over Long Beach, killing three people.

In January 2008, two planes hit each other over Corona, raining down debris over a strip of auto dealerships. Four people on board the planes were killed, along with one victim on the ground.

According to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Southern California rivals New York for the volume of air traffic. In New York, pilots complain about what they say can be a hazardous flight over the Hudson River, where nine people died in a 2009 collision between an airplane and a tour helicopter.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, there have been 120 midair collisions since 1999, killing more than 160 people.

Welk said technology that can warn pilots even of small planes of approaching aircraft is minimizing the danger posed by midair collisions.

"I wouldn't say it's not safe, but accidents will happen," Welk said.

Police Search for Missing North Richland Hills Teen

The North Richland Hills Police Department wants the public to help find 14-year-old Ruby Contreras. She's been missing since Wednesday and police believe she may be with 24-year-old Stephan Cox who they say is dangerous.

North Richland Hills police want the public's help in finding a 14-year-old girl who has been missing since Wednesday.

Ruby Contreras failed to return home from North Oaks Middle School in Haltom City on April 24. Police they were notified at 8 p.m. that night of her disappearance.

Investigators said they believe she has left North Texas and could be with 26-year-old Stephan Andrew Cox.

Cox currently faces charges after a teen girl from Pennsylvania reportedly stole her parents car to drive to Ohio to meet him.

Court records show that Columbus, Ohio, authorities in January charged Cox with two counts of unlawful sexual contact with a minor.

Cox, who has been on house arrest since February, was supposed to have an ankle monitor. He is due in court in Ohio on Tuesday.

The Pennsylvania girl's parents told investigators that she and Cox met online.

North Richland Hill police said they do not believe Contreras had met Cox face-to-face before Wednesday but will not say how they met.

Police say Cox is dangerous and that Contreras is not safe with him.

Police believe they might be traveling west by bus service. Investigators have photographic evidence that the pair traveled to El Paso on a Greyhound bus that left from Wednesday from the downtown Fort Worth terminal.

The Contreras family told police that her disapperance is not normal behavior and that there is no reason to believe she ran away from home. The family said she did not take her cellphone with her and that they have never heard of Cox.

Ruby Contreras is 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighs approximately 95 pounds. She was last seen wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans.

Stephan Andrew Cox is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds.

The Texas State Operations Center has refused to call Contreras' disappearance an Amber Alert because of the lack of information on the vehicle they may be traveling in, but North Richland Hills police say they are still working to classify it as an Amber Alert and the classification doesn't lessen the need for the public to help locate her.

The North Richland Hills Police Department is asking anyone with any information as to the whereabouts of Contreras or Cox to call 911 immediately.

NBC 5's Ben Russell contributed to this report.

People along Windy Meadows Drive in Burleson say their neighborhood is infested with rats the size of cats.

Mack Cook said the problem gets bad every night just after sunset -- and invited NBC 5 to witness the invasion.

We counted five rats in just two minutes and more than 20 others in the next 30 minutes.

They were everywhere -- in the trees, along the fence line and inside Cook's storage shed.

"It's getting worse than it was last year," Cook said. "I see them at night on the roof, coming through the gutters, down the downspout. ... This is like playtime for them."

Cook blames the city for not properly maintaining a drainage ditch that runs behind his house. It is not covered in concrete -- even though concrete covers the same ditch just one block away.

The area behind Cook's house is considered a wetlands and is legally protected from development, said Burleson spokeswoman Sally Ellertson.

The city mows the area monthly, she added.

Cook said city officials have suggested he hire an exterminator but he believes it's the city's responsibility.

The National Review Online is reporting Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz is considering a bid for the nation's top office in 2016.

According to the article, Cruz is already discussing a presidential run with supporters.  If he makes a run, he'll likely face senators Marco Rubio of Florida and Paul Rand of Kentucky as contenders for the Republican nomination.

Supporters argue the 42-year-old attorney would be a Barry Goldwater-type who would rattle the GOP establishment.

Although he was born in Canada, Cruz feels he's eligible to be President of the United States since his mother was a U.S. citizen.

Before running for the senate seat vacated by retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in 2012, Cruz was the Solicitor General for the state of Texas between 2003 and 2008.

Cruz has said nothing publicly about any plans to run in the next presidential election.
