The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the cause of deaths of four people found inside a Mesquite home as a murder-suicide.

The Dallas County medical examiner said the deaths of 44-year-old Marcelo Vazquez, 18-year-old Alejandro Roman Vazquez and 21-year-old Paulina Belen Vazquez have been ruled as homicides.

The death of Angelica Vazquez, 43, wife and mother, has been ruled as a suicide. A handgun was located on the floor in the master bedroom near her body, according to Mesquite police.

Detectives are still investigating a motive.

Mesquite police say the four bodies were found inside the home in the1400 block of Paintbrush Street four days after receiving a 911 call reporting gunfire.

Police officials told NBC 5 that officers were called to the home at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday after someone reported hearing gunfire.

The responding officers said they did not see anything unusual and did not see signs of forced entry. They said they were unable to reach the residents.

The officers left after talking with a neighbor who reported hearing and seeing nothing out of the ordinary. Officers returned to the house two more times Saturday morning but were still unable to reach anyone who lived at the home.

Police said the same officer who initially responded to the call returned to the home Wednesday morning and noticed mail in the mailbox and newspapers in the yard. Officials then made the decision to enter the home. Once inside, police discovered the four bodies.

The bodies of two men and two women were found in four separate rooms of the house. Each victim had been shot, Lt. Bill Hedgpeth said.

Police identified the victims on Thursday.

"We process every death scene the same way," he said. "We look for any type of forensic evidence and any type of evidence at all that would lead us in a particular direction. We keep an open mind about it, because we want to see where that evidence will take us."

Police have released few details about the case.

A family friend told NBC 5 that Paulina attended the University of North Texas and that her brother Alejandro graduated from Mesquite High School last year.

"It was just what I thought was just a happy family," said Gustavo Herrera, who told reporters he went to his senior prom with the 21-year-old victim.

Herrera and other friends were gathered outside of the victims' home until well past dark Wednesday night.

"There wasn't anything bad going on with the family," said neighbor Alex Turrubiartes, who graduated high school with the 18-year-old. "There was nothing -- no trouble, nothing; normal."

The investigation into the deaths is ongoing.

DWI Officer Fired for Drunken Driving

Police officials have fired a DWI enforcement officer whose arrest in January on suspicion of drunken driving came amid a string of similar charges against Fort Worth officers and prompted a tough response by the department.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports a disciplinary letter filed Thursday indicates Nicolas Ramirez's firing took effect earlier in the week.

Ramirez, 32, was off-duty and driving north of Fort Worth when his vehicle was spotted by an officer drifting off the road. Ramirez was arrested on suspicion of DWI after failing a field sobriety test. He's been free on $1,500 bond since shortly after his arrest.

Stella Lopez, whose daughter Sonia Baker was killed in a crash with an officer who was later convicted of intoxication manslaughter, said after Ramirez's arrest that Fort Worth Chief of Police Jeffrey Halstead needed to get tough and fire officers who break the law.

Halstead said at the time that he judges each case individually, but said Ramirez's arrest would be handled quickly and that he would fire any officer internal investigators determine had driven while drunk.

Ramirez's attorney could not be immediately reached for comment.

The city of Arlington has a backlog of infrastructure projects in the works.

The city hopes to raise $20 million this summer by selling bonds on the capital market. Revenues generated from the bond sales will fund the city's critical projects.

"We've got a backlog, so it's important that as aggressively as we can we try to meet those needs," Councilman Jimmy Bennett said.

The city is proposing nearly $55 million in capital budget projects this year.

A majority of the $20 million is expected to go to the Public Works Department for significant road repairs, as well as upgrades to parks and buildings. The City Council is also considering a possible new fire station.

The city plans to also address water and sewer system needs with bond revenues.

"It does allow us to finance those major capital projects in the city but it's also important to responsibly manage that," Bennett said. "To be good stewards of the taxpayers' money, we want to make sure we're not overextended ourselves but also trying to meet those project needs the best we can."

With an improving economic outlook and property values on the rise, Bennett said the city would be able to take on even more upgrades in the future.

Councilman Robert Rivera agreed.

"[The bonds are] an investment into our community and it's one that will help us grow and flourish into the future," he said.

Shopper Says Beauty Store Owner Attacked Her

Mark Schnyder, NBC 5 News

Ruth Jones says she was accused of stealing and assaulted by Gyuman Lee at his store in Arlington. He was arrested and charged with assault, now the NAACP is warning women to think twice before doing business at his store.

An Arlington woman says a store owner accused her of stealing and attacked her.

Ruth Jones said Guyman Lee, 30, grabbed her wallet, threw it behind him and accused of stealing when she tried to pay for beauty products for her daughters at Uptown Beauty Supply on March 6. He then attacked her, she said.

"He wouldn't let me go," Jones said. "He just kept on doing all these moves on me and tossing me all over the store, and my daughters were trying to help me out, and ladies in the store [were] trying to help me, telling him to let me go, but he wouldn't."

Arlington police arrested Lee on suspicion of aggravated assault.

Jones' attorney, Douglas Greene, and the Arlington NAACP have suggested that the attack happened because Jones is black.

"People have to understand that this conduct cannot take place here in 2013. This is ridiculous," Greene said.

A review of the store's security video shows that Jones was not stealing, he said.

Kimmee Manning, a customer at Uptown Beauty Supply, said she was treated at the store Friday.

"I walked in the store, they said hello, treated me very courteous, said 'thank you' when I left and 'have a nice day,'" she said.

Lee, who is free on bail and back at his store, declined to comment on the case and said he was looking for a lawyer.

He does not have a previous criminal record, according to a records search.

Rookie Cop Saves Woman From Burning Van

advertisement

A rookie Carrollton police officer says he was in the "right place at the right time" when he saved a woman from a burning van Friday.

Officer Nic Berry had parked his patrol car on Interstate 35 near the President George Bush Turnpike to direct traffic around an unrelated accident when a woman suddenly drove up with smoke pouring from her vehicle.

"She was real frantic," Berry said. "She kept trying to pull on the door and I kept asking her, 'Will it not open?' I kept trying to tell her where to flip the lock as opposed to hitting the electric button."

But her door wouldn't open.

"Once I realized you can't open the door, there's nothing we can do to get her out -- that's when I was like, 'We're going to have to get her out,'" he said.

Berry -- a rookie just four weeks out of training -- knew just what to do.

With smoke building, he told her to crawl into the back of the van and grabbed the baton tucked in his belt.

"They train us to aim for the corner of the glass so I just stepped back," he said. "She was in the back seat, of course. And I took my baton and hit it in the corner until it shattered."

He then quickly cleaned up the shards of glass and dragged her out to safety.

The van quickly caught fire, but the woman was unhurt.

"Fortunate enough, we were there at the right place at the right time -- kind of divine intervention," he said.

The department declined to release the woman's name for privacy reasons.

Word of the incident quickly spread on social media. The Carrollton Police Department posted the story on its Facebook page and, within a few hours, nearly 2,000 people "liked" it.

Berry, 27, was working for a trucking company in his hometown of Monroe, La., when he decided he wanted to be a police officer and moved to Texas.

He said that what happened Friday is one of the reasons he was drawn to police work.

"So many times, people think there's a negative light shed on cops and that we're just out there to 'get' everybody. That's not the case," he said. "It's nice to have a positive effect on somebody and show them, 'Hey, we do other stuff other than write tickets and take people to jail.'"

Chicago Churches Pray For New Pope

Local Catholic churches are doing what new Pope Francis asked -- praying for him.

The group SNAP -- the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests -- wants a meeting with the newly-elected pontiff.

The group's midwest director in Chicago on Friday called for a new rule mandating abusive priests be turned over to the police.

"We want to begin a new dialogue with him, and with the church we want to begin a real dialogue about prevention of child sexual abuse," Peter Isely said outside the Chicago archdiocesan headquarters.

He was flanked by a small number of men and women abused as children asking for action to be taken against priests who have mistreated children.

"Right now if you're a priest in most parts of the world, and you have been known by your bishop to have raped or sexually assaulted a child, you get to remain in the priesthood and in most of these cases you're remaining in ministry working with children and families," Isely said.

Isely stated that the majority of priests within the church are working on behalf of children, but there is still a need to "turn a new page" and set rules for those who aren't.

The group is also calling on Chicago's Cardinal Francis George to aid them in setting up a meeting with the pope.

"There has probably been more progress in 15 years than there has been in 15 centuries," Isely said.

Group members said they're encouraged by the pope's choice of "Francis" as his namesake because St. Francis was one of the greatest reformers in church history and stood for justice.

A couple who turned in an ill, emaciated cocker spaniel to animal authorities, saying they found it in a bag on the side of a New Jersey roadway, has been charged with animal cruelty, according to the Monmouth County SPCA.

Victor "Buddy" Amato, the Chief Humane Law Enforcement Officer with the SPCA, told NBC 4 New York that Keith Morgan, 55, and Shauna Morgan, 44, of Brick Township were charged after "interviews with the suspects and facts presented."

The Monmouth County prosecutor's office spokesman Charles Webster said the Morgans are facing multiple counts of animal cruelty and interfering with an investigation.

Alicia Necker of the Associated Humane Societies said the couple brought the dog in on Thursday, saying they found it in a black plastic bag along a road in Wall Township. The dog was believed to be in poor condition before being placed in the bag.

"It's severe, he's not out of the woods," Necker said.

Workers at the AHS named the dog "Morgan" before it knew that the couple owned it.

Morgan is hooked up to two separate IVs in a restricted recovery area at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Tinton Falls.

When NBC 4 New York visited him, he was laid out in a cage and unresponsive.

Women Will Get $40,000 for Truck Shot by Police

LA City Attorney Vows to Help Get Compensation for Delivery Women

Two women whose truck was riddled with bullets by LAPD officers who mistook the pair for a fugitive ex-officer have yet to get a new truck, despite a pledge from Chief Charlie Beck to replace it. LA City Attorney Carmen Trutanich is stepping in, saying the issue could be resolved in a matter of days. Hetty Chang reports from Downtown LA for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on March 13, 2013.

No New Truck for Women Shot During Dorner Manhunt

After the LAPD asked two newspaper delivery women to pay taxes on a truck the department vowed to donate to them, the victims – who were shot at more than 100 times during a frenzied manhunt for Christopher Dorner – rejected the replacement truck, worth more than $30,000. Hetty Chang reports for the NBC4 News at 6 p.m. on March 11, 2013.

More Photos and Videos

The Los Angeles City Attorney's office has reached an agreement to pay two newspaper delivery women $40,000 for the loss of their truck, which was shot up by police in a case of mistaken identity during the search for ex-LAPD officer Christopher Dorner.

The Los Angeles Police Department had said it planned to replace the mother-daughter pair's truck, which was shot at more than 100 times while they delivered newspapers in Torrance, according to the women's attorney.

But the women were told they would need to pay income taxes on the value of the truck after a private donor got an involved — and 71-year-old Emma Hernandez and daughter Margie Carranza refused that offer.

Details on the "property agreement" with Hernandez and Carranza to compensate them for the truck were announced at a 3 p.m. press conference by LA City Attorney Carmen Trutanich's office. Both Trutanich and the women's attorney, Glen Jonas, were at the event at LA City Hall.

The attorneys said the women will get a check for $40,000 for the value of the truck, and they will not have to pay attorney's fees or income taxes on the amount. Jonas will not be compensated for his work related to the truck.

The agreement releases both sides from liability for the property loss, and it allows the truck to be used by the city as evidence until it's no longer needed. Then the seriously damaged truck will be returned to the women.

The money will come out of the city's general fund.

Trutanich said he believed the agreement was a "fair resolution." Earlier in the week, he had said he wanted to find a way to compensate them for the truck, calling it a "no-brainer."

"It's going to be handled competently, it's going to be handled appropriately and in the best interests of the city of Los Angeles," said Trutanich, who faces reelection on May 21, on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Trutanich's office is examining a demand letter over the shooting sent by Jonas. The letter asks for compensation related to the shooting beyond to the value of the truck.

"I don't understand how they survived," Jonas said last month. "They're grappling with a lot of issues — the fact that they were almost killed by the police."

On Thursday, he said he's hopeful that the city and his clients can come to an agreement — based on the ease with which compensation for the truck was worked out.

"I'm pleased to have it done; my clients are pleased to have it done. Everybody gets to move forward, put this incident as far as the donation was concerned, behind us, and get down to business," Jonas said.

"If we don't, we do what lawyers do. We go to trial," Jonas said during the news conference.

The women were shot at Feb. 7 when they drove their blue Toyota Tacoma in the dark, early morning hours toward the Torrance home of one of the police officials who was under protection because of threats in an angry manifesto posted online by Dorner, who was later killed after an extensive manhunt.

Hernandez was shot in the back and still suffers from nerve pain, Jonas said.

North Texas Tiger Snoozing After Hip Surgery

advertisement

A 13-year-old North Texas tiger is resting peacefully after undergoing delicate hip surgery.

Tacoma, a tiger at In-Sync Exotics in Wylie, with joint pain had an operation Thursday to cut nerves that signal pain from his hip.

"This tiger has a condition known as hip dysplasia, and so that's where there's an abnormal shape to the ball and socket joint of the hips," Dr. Doug Whiteside said. "And, as a result of that, it developed quite severe arthritis in both hips, and so the surgery that we did today was to help to take away the pain associated with that arthritis."

Two veterinarians from Calgary, Alberta, worked as a team to cut one of Tacoma's sensory nerves at a doctor's office in Wylie.

Vets to Perform Hip Surgery on Tiger

Veterinarians from Canada will operate on Tacoma, a tiger from In-Sync Exotics in Wylie.

"He doesn't lose the feeling in his toes or anything like that," said Vicky Keahey, In-Sync Exotics founder. "I mean, if he's walking and he puts his foot on a rock, he's still going to feel that -- he's just not going to feel the pain in his hip."

It was the first time the surgery was performed on a big cat in Texas.

"We're hoping that, based on our past experience with this surgery, that he's got a good prognosis for getting improved function in his hip," Whiteside said.

In-Sync Exotics, a wildlife rescue for big cats, rescued Tacoma when he was less than a year old.

He has had pain and a slight limp for the last two years. Before the surgery, veterinarians said he should be up and moving a week after the surgery.

Keahey said she is thankful to finally find a solution to Tacoma's painful problem. She said in an interview Wednesday that she will be excited to see him play again.

"He'll be able to get back up on his platforms again, be able to play with his ball and do all the things that he used to like to do," she said.

Keahey said In-Sync Exotics has had a rough year, but the surgery has been a welcome bit of good news.

In-Sync Exotics is a nonprofit wildlife rescue that cares for big cats -- including lions, tigers, cougars and leopards -- that have been abused or abandoned.

Keahey rescued her first cougar in 1991. She added tigers in 1998 and established a nonprofit by 2000.

"This is my life's heart," she told NBC 5 in an interview in 2012.

She said her animals arrive after being rescued from breeding operations or even from drug dealers who use the animals for protection.

Keahey said she is licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has a permit from Collin County and is registered with the state of Texas. She is also accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and the Animal Sanctuaries Association.

In-Sync Exotics has several fundraisers through the year to pay for the animals' care, including an Easter egg hunt scheduled for March 30.

Complaints of Nighttime Jackhammering on LBJ

advertisement

Construction managers agreed Thursday to stop using a loud jackhammer at night along the LBJ Express project after neighbors complained they couldn't sleep and one man posted a YouTube video of the noisy work.

Neighbors say crews have used a "jackhammer on steroids" to tear down a large retaining wall on the south side of Interstate 635 near Welch Road in North Dallas.

"It's just a bam-bam-bam-bam-bam," Melissa Marco said.

It would start at about 3 a.m. or 4 a.m., neighbors said.

"We just couldn't sleep," Francis Stanush said.

But neighbors said their complaints fell on deaf ears.

"We're all excited about the finished product, what it's going to bring to the area," Dean Lee said. "But just some common sense for the neighborhood is all we're looking for."

In an email to one neighbor, LBJ Express spokeswoman Heather DeLapp wrote: "It would make it easier for everyone if in fact we could manage the hours so that we didn't disturb people but the honest answer is there is never a good time for construction."

Frustrated by a repeat of the loud noise at about 4 a.m. on Thursday, Stanush grabbed his iPhone, recorded a video and posted it on YouTube.

"This is compliments of LBJ Express and there's our house, right there," Stanush said in the video, pointing to his house.

Later Thursday, after seeing the video and being contacted by news reporters, construction managers agreed to limit the jackhammering from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"That's much more tolerable for the community," Stanush said.

In a statement, DeLapp said other work would continue at night but crews would finish the jackhammering work during the day.

"Hopefully, this will help improve the current conditions and mitigate the impact to the neighborhood," she said.

LBJ Express is a private, for-profit toll road being built along Interstate 635 by a subsidiary of Spanish company Cintra. It is expected to be completed in late 2015.

Doctors Detail Slain Baby's Injuries

Six-month-old Jonylah Watkins died Monday after being shot while her father, Jonathan Watkins, changed her diaper. Kim Vatis reports.

Father of Slain Baby Arrested 39 Times

Chicago's police superintendent says shooting that killed Jonylah Watkins has "very strong gang overtones," adding that Jonathan Watkins was the intended target. Phil Rogers reports.

A 28-year-old father injured in a Monday shooting in Chicago that killed his daughter was released from the hospital Thursday evening and went directly to a police station.

Jonathan Watkins stood silently as Pastor Corey Brooks, who has been acting as the family's spokesman, spoke to reporters outside the 5th District police station shortly after 9:30 p.m. Brooks said Watkins wished to "fully" cooperate with authorities and dispel misinformation that's been reported this week. He didn't offer specifics.

"His wounds haven't even healed yet and he's in a lot of pain and so we're going to go in and whatever the police need to know that he may know, we want to make sure that he fully commits himself to letting them know that," said Brooks.

Police said Jonathan Watkins told them he was changing the diaper on his 6-month-old daughter, Jonylah Watkins, on Monday when someone came up behind him and started shooting. Sources told NBC Chicago on Wednesday police had their doubts about that story.

The girl suffered multiple injuries to her little body and died the morning after the shooting. A medical examiner source told NBC Chicago the damage to her thigh, shoulder, lung live and bowels may have been caused by a single bullet.

Jonathan Watkins, police said, has ties to the Gangster Disciples and has an extensive criminal record. Police records show he's been arrested 39 times and was likely the shooter's intended target. Numerous weapons violations and an attempt to steal his car back from police after it was impounded are among the previous charges against the father.

"He paid for his crime. He's fine with that. We're not trying to hide from that. We're not ducking and dodging from that," Brooks said Thursday night. "But that's not the issue. The issue is a baby got shot and killed and we need everybody to stay on point and stay on focus on what happened."

Jonylah Watkins' funeral has been scheduled for March 19. Brooks said basketball star Derrick Rose has offered to pay for the services.

An $11,000 reward stands for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.

Four people were injured, two critically, after a LED display that hung from a stage fell at the site of the Ultra Music Festival Thursday night, Miami Fire-Rescue said.

Two workers were trapped after the lighting display fell in Bayfront Park, while debris hit another person, Miami Fire-Rescue spokesman Lt. Ignatius Carroll said.

Firefighters were able to free the trapped people and rushed them to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where they are in critical condition, Carroll said.

He said the LED display crashed at about 7:50 p.m. on the stage at the south end of the park. It is one of two main stages for the festival, which is scheduled to begin Friday.

One witness described the display as an approximately 30-foot-long rectangular video monitor that was suspended under the red "U" above the stage.

Authorities initially reported that a stage collapsed.

Ultra Music Festival Expanding to 2 Weekends

Construction was almost complete on the stage where the incident occurred, but all operations were halted there Thursday night.

"And right now we're going to suspend any of the building on that stage until daylight, where we can be out here with structural engineers, OSHA as well, and then the fire marshal's staff, to make sure that this stage and all the other stages are going to be safe for the Ultra Fest," Carroll said.

One person who was injured refused treatment on the scene, Capt. Bill Christopher, a dispatcher with Miami Fire-Rescue, told NBC News.

A Grapevine police officer is recovering at home after a driver slammed into the back of his patrol car while he was helping out another driver early Friday morning.

The officer was parked on the side of state Highway 121, just past William D Tate Boulevard, when his cruiser was struck from behind at about 2:18 a.m.

In a news release Friday morning, Sgt. Robert Eberling with the Grapevine Police Department, said the officer was assisting a motorist who had run out of gas along a shoulder-less section of highway and had positioned his cruiser behind the motorist.

While he was sitting in the cruiser, with both his emergency lights and directional board illuminated, the officer was struck from behind by a 20-year-old female driving a Toyota Avalon.

The officer arrested the driver before he was transported to the hospital as a precaution. The officer has since been released and police said he suffered only minor injuries.

The officer's police vehicle had minor damage.

Police haven't yet released the driver's name, but did say that she was arrested for intoxication assault after failing a field sobriety test.

The crash remains under investigation by the Grapevine police.

NBC 5's Frank Heinz contributed to this report.

Carnival Dream Stuck in St. Maarten

A month after a Carnival cruise ship was stranded for five days in the Gulf of Mexico, another of its cruise ships is reporting equipment problems in the Caribbean.

The United States Coast Guard says the Carnival Dream cruise ship has an emergency equipment situation that is keeping the ship from traveling.

The cruise ship, which has a capacity of 3,646 passengers and 1,367 crew members, is docked at Phillipsburg in St. Maarten.

Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rios of the US Coast Guard says the Dream still has power and still has sewage facilities, but the ship remains moored while technicians fix an emergency diesel generator that affects propulsion.

Since the ship lacks propulsion, it is not able to head to its next port of call. The ship was scheduled to leave from Phillipsburg around 5 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday.

Carnival is not disembarking passengers as they believe the situation will be quickly fixed. The Coast Guard is not involved because the ship is moored.

Carnival posted this message to their Facebook page, commenting on the incident:

The Carnival Dream has a technical issue which our engineering team is currently working on. The ship is at dock in St. Maarten. At no time did the ship lose power but there were periodic interruptions to elevators and toilets for a few hours last night. However at this time all hotel systems are functioning normally and have been functional since approximately 12.30am. The ship has full power but is still at dock while personnel continue to work on the technical issue. The Carnival Dream was on a seven-day cruise and is based in Port Canaveral, Fla.

Previously, the US Coast Guard said the ship had lost power. Later updates clarified that the power issues were related to the "periodic interruptions" referred to by Carnival in their statement.

This incident comes after another Carnival cruise ship, the Triumph, was towed back to Alabama after losing power in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico.

A fire aboard that ship left the passengers and crew with no air conditioning, scarce food, and unsanitary conditions.

Dad Battles School Over Patriotic Songs

A Southern California man claims his daughter was forced to sing songs in class that violate her religious beliefs.

Paul Salcedo's daughter is in the third grade at Rosebank Elementary School in Chula Vista, Calif.

Salcedo objects to his daughter, who is a Jehovah's Witness, singing the songs "My Country 'Tis of Thee," "This Land is Your Land" and "You're a Grand Ol' Flag."

"That's a part of the religion too. They don't salute the flag. They don't sing those types of songs. That's their right," Salcedo said.

Salcedo, whose wife is a Jehovah's Witness, got emotional when he discussed how his daughter said she was forced to sing the songs.

"It's my kids. I gotta protect them," Salcedo said. "I mean, they're not going to. I'm the only one who's going to be their voice."

Other points of conflict between the family and the school included a Halloween-based curriculum and valentines distributed in class.

Salcedo they had an agreement between the principal and the teacher that his daughter would be excused during those songs. Now, he said the trust between parent and educators has been broken.

"It's a violation of the law. We have those civil rights and it's already been brought to their attention of our beliefs and our practices," Salcedo said.

The Chula Vista Elementary School District disputes Salcedo's account.

"We don't see these songs as being anything other than folk songs," said Anthony Millican, the spokesperson for the Chula Vista Elementary School District.

"The child has not been required to sing these songs at any point," Millican said adding that the schools will not stop teaching the folks songs.

The district has offered options to parents who want to their children not to participate he said.

"We are sensitive to the needs of every student, so we're looking to find a reasonable solution," Millican said.

The district says they're also excusing the child from social studies class during certain topics.

A meeting scheduled Tuesday between all the parties was canceled because Salcedo wanted to record the discussion.

He said his wife planned to sit in on the music lesson on Wednesday to observe.

The family has considered private education and homeschooling, but Salcedo said those options were not financially possible.

A dangerous high speed chase ended in Dallas Thursday morning when a motorcycle driver crashed into the back of a trooper's car.

That driver had serious leg injuries and is in the hospital under police guard. He will be charged with felony evading arrest.

The chase lasted 15 minutes. It began around midnight when a trooper tried to pull over the motorcyclist for speeding along the Dallas North Tollway.

The driver eventually got off the highway at Walnut Hill Lane and crashed into the back of a DPS cruiser that was attempting to get him to pull over.

It's unclear why the biker led police on the chase. No one else was injured.

"A Working Man's Pope"

advertisement

Pope Francis, the first-ever Jesuit and Latin American to lead the Roman Catholic Church, was not a widely known figure on the international stage before emerging Wednesday evening on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. But for many, his humble demeanor and speech made a powerful impression.

In his first address as Supreme Pontiff, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a native of Buenos Aires, joked that the cardinals had gone "almost to the end of the world" to find their new Bishop of Rome. And before stepping back inside, he asked for a favor of his "brothers and sisters." Pray for me, he asked.

For full coverage of Pope Francis' papacy, visit NBCNews.com.

Brother Charles Hilken, an expert in papal history at St. Mary's College of California, said he knew no other modern pope to make such a "beautiful, authentic gesture."

"He had the presence of mind to know that he's more than the choice of 115 elderly men from all parts of the world. He had to be the choice of Rome and the rest of the world," Hilken said.

As archbishop of Buenos Aires, Francis developed a positive reputation for his work with the poor. He eschewed the perks of high office, living in a small apartment instead of a palace and taking the bus instead of chauffeured car.

He is an arch conservative when it comes to social issues but also has preached compassion for the poor, AIDS sufferers and the otherwise downtrodden.

"We live in the most unequal part of the world, which has grown the most yet reduced misery the least," Bergoglio told a gathering of Latin American bishops in 2007, according to the National Catholic Reporter.

Father David Cooper, who heads the Association of U.S. Catholic Priests, believes the Cardinals opted for a change of direction by selecting Bergoglio.

"He's what you might call a working man's pope. He is not aristocratic," Cooper said. "I would see that as a departure."

In that sense, the choice reminded Cooper of Pope John XXIII, a son of sharecroppers who defied expectations that he would be a caretaker pontiff and instead became a major reformer, calling for the Second Vatican Council that modernized the church.

"I think he'll have a way of working with people," Cooper said of Francis. "From the first words he said, about bringing people together into one brotherhood, to me that sounds like he's really talking about unifying and not dividing."

Bergoglio will be the first Jesuit pope and the first pope to choose the name Francis, for St. Francis of Assisi, who abandoned his wealth and devoted his life to the poor.

As a member of one of the largest Catholic religious orders, Francis will be able to draw from a vast international network of missionaries, said Helen Osman, spokeswoman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

"He's going to bring great depth for theological purposes, but also a great depth from the heart, which is where the church is supposed to be," Osman said.

Like many Catholics, Osman is still learning who Francis is. But she was impressed by the image of him standing on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, looking out at the crowd. "I was struck by his humbleness," she said. "I can't presume to know what he was thinking, but it almost looked like a bit of panic on his face."

His address, however, struck Osman for its message of egalitarianism.

"He talked about starting this journey together, bishop with the people and people with the bishop. It's like going back to the gospel stories about Jesus walking along with the road with his disciples. He sees himself as making a journey with fellow Catholics and the rest of the world."

Raymond Schroth, literary editor of America Magazine, a Jesuit publication, said he was nearly brought to tears upon seeing Bergoglio emerge as pope. To him, the choice means a break from the status quo in many ways.

"The most delicious detail is, well, we all have a lot of fantasies about what we'd do if we were pope or bishop and one of mine has always been that I'd just live in a couple rooms and live simply," Schroth said. "I'd try to identify as much as possible with the poor. And this seems to be a man who has done that."

Francis is also expected to be a defender of traditional Catholicism. His views on gender, sexuality and abortion are closely aligned with the traditional views of the church.

Cardinal Sean O'Malley, who was among the two dozen prelates named as possible successors to Benedict XVI, said in a statement that Pope Francis continues the mission of St. Peter "in an increasingly secular culture, where many people have not come to know or have forgotten that Jesus is our Savior and Redeemer."

"We pledge our faithful support for the Holy Father as he leads the Church in proclaiming the new Evangelization, inviting all people to develop a closer relationship with Christ."

Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Francis studied philosophy, theology and chemistry and was ordained in 1969. As a teenager, he suffered an infection that required surgery to remove most of one lung, but he recovered and has not faced significant obstacles as a result of the operation, The Associated Press reported.

Four years after he was ordained he was later elevated to lead the Jesuits in Argentina and in 1992 was appointed auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires. When Cardinal Quarracino died in 1998, he was installed as the city's new archbishop.

According to the National Catholic Register, he originally planned to be a chemist, but later decided to enter the priesthood and spent much of his early career teaching literature, psychology and philosophy. He developed into a champion of the poor, avoiding the perks of his appointments and chastising his fellow church leaders for straying from their teachings.

"These are today's hypocrites; those who clericalize the church," he told priests who had refused to baptize the children of unwed mothers, according to The Associated Press. "Those who separate the people of God from salvation."

Critics have accused Bergoglio and other church leaders of not taking a strong enough stand against the military dictatorship's 1976-83 crackdown on leftists and political opponents, but Bergoglio later sought public forgiveness for the church's inaction.

Francis, who was selected on the second day of the conclave, will be officially installed as the 266th pope on Tuesday, March 19 in St. Peter's Square.

It's Lights Out for Google Reader RSS Service

advertisement

RIP Google Reader.

Google announced on Wednesday that it is shutting down its RSS service Google Reader on July 1.

The reader, which has a loyal fan base but waning popularity, was developed in 2005 as a way for people to easily curate and discover online content. But Google said it needs to free up resources for a "new kind of computing environment."

"To make the most of these opportunities, we need to focus—otherwise we spread ourselves too thin and lack impact," the tech giant said in a blog post.

The news comes on the heels of another announcement on Wednesday that Andy Rubin, the mastermind behind the Android phone operating system, will be stepping down as head of Google's digital content as the search engine giant combines mobile and desktop divisions.

The demise of Google reader touched a nerve. Fans have started an online petition on keepgooglereader.com, which as of Thursday morning, boasted over 18,000 people who begged to keep the service alive.

"Google Reader is my sole source of news and blogs. Please don't shut it down," wrote James Kwang Huang on the petition.

Another website, bringgooglereaderback.com, took a more humorous approach with an animated GIF of actress Alison Brie addressed to Google that pleaded with the company to "bring back Google Reader."

Google Reader is the latest product to land in Google's graveyard. The firm has shuttered a total of 70 features and services since their "spring cleaning" effort started in 2011. Other recent closures include Google Desktop and Google Maps API for Flash. Remember Google Buzz and Wave?

The latest round of closures also includes Google Cloud Connect, a plug-in that helps people save files from Windows PCs in Google Drive. It was ousted by a more streamlined version of Google Drive and Connect will go away on April 30.

Three-dimensional building tool Google Building Maker will retire on June 1 and Google will end its support for a voice app for Blackberry users.

For those who aren't relying on the online effort to spare Google Reader, there are a host of possible reader replacements.

USA Today provided a round-up of four alternatives that includes slick mobile phone apps like Feedly, Pulse, Flipboard and Twitter.

NewsBlur and The Old Reader are apps that have the ability to import Google Reader's feeds, according to Mashable.

Reaction to 6-Month-Old Girl's Shooting Death

Pastor Corey Brooks and Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy react to Jonylah Watkins' death. The girl was shot five times while her father changed her diaper in their minivan.

Mayor: Baby's Shooting Death 'Despicable'

In response to the death of a 6-month-old who was shot five times Monday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the fatal shooting was "a senseless, despicable act of violence."

More Photos and Videos

After the murder totals in Chicago started racking up after January of this year, South Side native Bryant Cross decided he'd seen enough.

The 28-year-old speech communications professor started thinking of effective ways to spread an anti-violence message and came up with the 500campaign, head shots of Chicagoans with the slogan "Angry Because Over 500 Youth Were Murdered in Chicago."

"I came across a picture of myself looking sad and that's what started it," Cross says. "I posted it on Instagram and Facebook with the text, and next thing I know, 20 people emailed me asking to do it for them."

He's had fairly steady requests over the past couple of weeks, but when 6-month-old Jonylah Watkins was fatally shot on Monday, the requests started coming in fast and furious.

He's edited hundreds of photos for his followers, who in turn are spreading the message on their own social media networks.

"There's a depression out here, people are wondering what they can do," Cross said. "I wanted to get people worked up so they at least feel like there's something they can do to address the violence."

Cross would like to harness the group energy into creating an anti-violence rally in downtown Chicago this summer.

"It's time to boost the morale of the city," Cross says. Whenever people outside of Chicago think of our city, they think of sports and violence. I want to see a day with no shootings and no killings ... a day of peace."

Police in Connecticut arrested a man they said was high on PCP as he ran naked through the streets of Bridgeport and an interstate highway while carrying a baby.

Surveillance cameras showed the man, who police identified as Santos Rodriguez, walking around naked around 4 a.m. on Saturday as he carried his girlfriend's son.

He stopped on Burr Road, near his apartment, took off the baby's diaper, then tossed it in the middle of the street, according to police.

Seconds later, Rodriguez ran through a BP gas station on Fairfield Avenue, then onto Interstate 95 with the baby boy and streaked through both lanes of traffic. Police finally caught him on an exit ramp after receiving frantic calls from drivers.

"It was crazy," Rodriguez' neighbor said. "I never saw him do anything crazy like that. … A first time for me."

Police said problems started when Rodriguez showed up at his apartment after a night of partying.
They said he got into a fight with his girlfriend, snatched her baby out of his playpen and took off with him.

"I think he's gotten progressively worse, then just slipped off the deep end," Sal Zucaro, a relative of Rodriguez' landlord, said.

Police said the baby was checked out at the hospital and was not injured. He is back with his mother.

Rodriguez was in prison on Tuesday night, charged with first-degree kidnapping, risk of injury to a minor, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.

FDA Issues Heart Warning About Popular Z-Pak

Check your medicine cabinet. You might have a common drug which a new FDA warning says may carry serious or even fatal heart risks.

The warning comes 10 months after a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found a small increase in cardiovascular deaths among people being treated with azithromycin, usually called Z-Pak capsules.

The capsules are a good, broad spectrum antibiotic taken over five days to fight respiratory infections.

But now the FDA says people with certain heart problems are at a higher risk of having serious side-effects from azithromycin, which the FDA warning says "can cause abnormal changes in the electrical activity of the heart that may lead to a potentially fatal irregular heart rhythm."

Doctors and pharmacists are taking note.

"The warning is meant for prescribers just to alert them that there is this incidence of increased risk of cardiac death for people that took Z-Pak that already had this heart defect," said Andy Komuves with Dougherty's pharmacy in Dallas.

"The warning specifically deals with the patient group of people that have heart defects that cause arrhythmia, people who have something called prolonged QT interval, which is a type of arrhythmia and people who have slow heart rate or people who are potassium or magnesium deficient," said Komuves. "If you're not one of those patients, you don't have to worry about the Z-Pak."

The FDA says patients should not stop taking the Z-Pak without first talking to your health care professional, and seek immediate care if you experience an irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness or fainting while taking it.

But if you do have a heart defect, Komuves recommends that you talk to your doctor before taking another dose.

Dallas police are searching for a shooter after a man was shot multiple times after a large street fight.

A police report states the fight broke out between 27-year-old Cesar Acosta and as many as 13 men on Gallagher Street and Odessa near Singleton in West Dallas around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Several neighbors called 911 to report about a dozen people fighting in the street, including Acosta, who had been standing near his black pick-up truck and was caught in the middle of the brawl.

Police say Acosta ran from the pack of people and was followed by the unidentified shooter, who opened fire and hit Acosta in the legs and chest. The crowd scattered when gunfire erupted and the shooter got away.

The injured Acosta collapsed on the street corner and police say no one stayed behind to help him.

Officers found a gun at the scene but are not sure it was used in the shooting. Investigators were not exactly sure why the fight began.

Acosta was taken to Parkland Hospital with gunshot wounds and is expected to survive, according to police.

Police Look for Leads in Woman's Murder

Dallas police are still looking for leads in the case of 79-year-old Avanell Cowgill killed in her East Dallas home and found dead on Saturday, March 9. Two rewards totaling $15,000 are being offered for information in the case.

Dallas police want the public's help in finding several people seen at various stores using the credit cards of a 79-year-old woman killed in her East Dallas home last week.

Avanell Cowgill's daughter asked police on Saturday to check on her. Officers went to the home in the 11300 block of Earlywood Drive in East Dallas and found the back door open and Cowgill dead inside the home.

Cowgill left church at approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Police said she went to a store, went home and may have been killed that night.

On Tuesday, Dallas homicide detectives released photos of two people seen at various stores on Friday, using Cowgill's credit cards.

The first person is a white man who is taller than 6 feet and weighs about 250 pounds. Police said he changes his appearance from one store to another and tries to avoid store security cameras.

In one photo, he is seen wearing a blue jeans, white shoes, a gray windbreaker and a baseball cap with a "B" on the front. Police say the same man was seen at a second store wearing blue jeans, white shoes, a brown work jacket with a hood and a black-and-red baseball cap with a "B" on the front.

The second person is a white man who is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs about 160 pounds. He was seen wearing a red, yellow and black horizontal striped shirt.

Dallas police released a photo of the car the two men were seen driving, it is an older model silver four-door compact car missing a back right hubcap.

Police also released a YouTube video from various angles of a store surveillance camera:

There are two separate rewards concerning the crime. Dallas CrimeStoppers is offering a $5,000 reward and Oak Farms Dairy is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this murder case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the lead detective on the case, Detective Scott Sayers at 214-671-3647.

San Francisco Symphony Threatens to Strike

That sour note you hear is labor negotiations at the San Francisco Symphony. As the prestigious symphony prepares to take its noted version of Mahler's Ninth Symphony on an East Coast tour, a contract dispute is threatening to derail the train before it hits the tracks.

"It's incredibly stressful and it kind of puts a cloud over everything," said symphony viola player Katie Kadarauch. The contract negotiations have stretched on since September, playing out along the traditional battlefield of dollars and cents.

The musicians are seeking roughly around a five percent raise to keep them on par with Los Angeles' and Chicago's orchestras, the only two earning more than San Francisco.

"Our musicians are among the highest paid orchestra members in the country," said symphony spokesman Oliver Theil. "Their average salary is over $160 thousand dollars a year with over ten weeks paid vacation."

The musicians insist most of their members earn closer to the starting salary of $140 thousand. "The management has come to us with a set of proposals that would freeze our salaries the first year," said David Gaudry, who plays viola and handles the musician's labor bargaining.

"We don't feel we're getting the support we need and have come to expect traditionally in the past."

On Tuesday, a string quartet of symphony musicians played Beethoven in San Francisco City Hall to rally support for their cause.

The musicians wore Dodger baseball caps to signify the Los Angeles Symphony earns more than San Francisco musicians.

The publicity event preceded new negotiations between musicians and management scheduled for the afternoon with a federal mediator.

"Our latest proposal offers the same benefit levels as our current contract," said Theil, "in addition to raises that keep the orchestra paid among the three highest paid American orchestras."

But Gaudry said the 5% salary increase the musicians are seeking is justified because the symphony's endowment had grown from $175 million in 2005, to its current level of $268 million.

He noted the symphony also spent $11 million dollars last year on celebrations for its centennial anniversary. Musicians recently voted to authorize a strike if a deal isn't soon hammered out. With an East Coast tour, including a concert in Carnegie Hall set for later this month, the saber rattling had reached a discordant climax.

"I think there's at least a very good probability there'll be a strike this week," Gaudry said.

The symphony threatened to cancel concerts and tours during a similar labor dispute in 2006. Like that occasion, both sides are hoping to strike a note of harmony just before the fat lady tunes up her vocal chords and steps out on stage.
