Connecticut authorities were preparing to release the names of the 20 children and six adults killed when a gunman unleashed the second deadliest school shooting in U.S. history at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Police said all of the victims have been identified, their parents and family notified, and their bodies have been removed from the school, NBC 4 New York reported Saturday. Connecticut state police plan to hold a news conference this morning, where they are expected to release the victims' names.

One of those victims is school principal Dawn Hochsprung, 47, NBC News has confirmed. She was married and had five children of her own.

School psychologist Mary Sherlach was also killed. Sherlach is survived by her husband of 31 years, Bill, and her 25- and 28-year-old daughters.

Hundreds of mourners gathered in Newtown —a town of 28,000 people 60 miles north of New York City— Friday night to remember the students and teachers lost in the tragedy. So many people had shown up for a vigil at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church that dozens, unable to get in, watched the service through open windows and doorways.

"I think about these children … and I know we have 20 new saints, 20 new angels," Monsignor Robert Weiss told the standing-room-only crowd. "But that doesn't take away the pain. It doesn't take away the hurt. But it does bring us closer together."

Earlier in the morning, 20-year-old Adam Lanza (pictured below) had stormed into Sandy Hook Elementary School and opened fire. Newtown Police Lt. George Sinko said on NBC's "Today" show it appeared Lanza shot his way into the school by shattering glass by the front door.

By the time his shooting rampage had ended, 20 small children and six adults had been killed. He, too, was found dead at the scene. A woman believed to be his mother was also found shot dead in a Newtown home. School's superintendent Dr. Janet Robinson told "Today" that there was no Nancy Lanza in their database. She may have been a substitute teacher, but it was unclear.

Investigators spent hours questioning Lanza's 24-year-old brother Ryan, who told them that Adam had a history of mental health issues and that they had not spoken in two years, NBC News reported.

It was the second-deadliest school shooting in American history, second only to the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting that killed 32.

President Obama, addressing the nation for the second time, said Satuday that in his weekly radio and Internet address that "every parent in America has a heart heavy with hurt."

On Friday, Obama teared up as he talked about the young victims.

"The majority of those who died today were children. Beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old," he said at a news conference. "They had their entire lives ahead of them. Birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own.

"So our hearts are broken for them today."

Two 9mm handguns recovered at scene—a Glock and a Sig Sauer—were legally purchased and registered to the shooter's mother, Nancy Lanza.

"We have a mountain of evidence, both physical and forensic," Lt. Sinko said on "Today." "Obviously we're not going to leave any stone unturned."

Students and parents described a scene of terror when the shots rang out early Friday morning. Witnesses said the attack occurred during morning announcements.

The brother of one student said his sister had heard screams coming over the intercom.

"When they were leaving the room … (state police) were telling the students to hold hands and close their eyes until they were outside," he said.

Back at the vigil, mourners wrote messages on three easels erected at the entrance to the church.

"May God look after and take care of your little angels," one wrote. "We are so so sorry for your loss. God bless your families. His strength will guide you."

Another wrote: "Sleep in heavenly peace."

Becky Mantone, who drove three of her daughters from nearby Fairfield to the vigil, said she didn't know anyone directly impacted by the attack, but felt compelled to take part so they could provide some small bit of comfort to their neighbors.

"We wanted to give our support to this town," Mantone said while she and her daughters stood in a circle, cradling lit candles outside the church. "I hope people would help our town if God forbid something happened to us."

As the investigation continues, officers have been assigned to the parents so the information is communicated directly to them, according to state police.

Tales of Horror from Newtown School Shooting

As word spread of the 27 tragic deaths at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., politicians from across the country offered their sympathies, expressed frustration and called for reform.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was the victim of a mass shooting in January 2011, sent her prayers via her husband's Facebook page, and a tearful President Obama told the nation, "our hearts are broken."

Mark Kelly, husband of former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
"I just woke up in my hotel room in Beijing, China, to learn that another mass shooting has taken place -- this time at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in CT. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the entire community of Newtown, CT. I just spoke to Gabby, and she sends her prayers from Tucson.

"As we mourn, we must sound a call for our leaders to stand up and do what is right. This time our response must consist of more than regret, sorrow, and condolence. The children of Sandy Hook Elementary School and all victims of gun violence deserve leaders who have the courage to participate in a meaningful discussion about our gun laws -- and how they can be reformed and better enforced to prevent gun violence and death in America. This can no longer wait." (Facebook)

President Barack Obama:
"The majority of those who died today were children -- beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10-years-old," he said, pausing to wipe away a tear. "They had their entire lives ahead of them -- birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own."

"Our hearts are broken today, for the parents, grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children," Obama added, "as well as the families of the adults who were lost." (NBC News)

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg
"It has come to that. Not even kindergarteners learning their A,B,Cs are safe. We heard after Columbine that it was too soon to talk about gun laws. We heard it after Virginia Tech. After Tucson and Aurora and Oak Creek. And now we are hearing it again. For every day we wait, 34 more people are murdered with guns. Today, many of them were 5-year-olds. President Obama rightly sent his heartfelt condolences to the families in Newtown. But the country needs him to send a bill to Congress to fix this problem. Calling for 'meaningful action' is not enough. We need immediate action. We have heard all the rhetoric before. What we have not seen is leadership -- not from the White House and not from Congress. That must end today. This is a national tragedy and it demands a national response. My deepest sympathies are with the families of all those affected, and my determination to stop this madness is stronger than ever."

Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ)
"This is a day of great sadness in America, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families.  This latest shooting tragedy is an unthinkable act of violence carried out against young children and innocent people.  Americans are sick and tired of these attacks on our children and neighbors and they are sick and tired of nothing being done in Washington to stop the bloodshed.  If we do not take action to address gun violence, shooting tragedies like this will continue.  As President Obama said, we must act now 'regardless of the politics.'"

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT)

"Hadassah and I are shocked and heartbroken by the horrific events in Newtown today. We know this community and its people well. It is a beautiful town with wonderful people. As parents and grandparents, our hearts grieve for them today, and we send our prayers to each of them. I have spoken with President Obama and Vice President Biden today, both of whom share our grief and will do everything they can to console, comfort, and strengthen the survivors and the community. I will do everything in my power to assist the victims, survivors and their loved ones in the long days ahead, and extend my deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this terrible event.

"I commend the work of our local authorities and first responders for their dedication today in Newtown. I hope that all those involved are able to work together in the coming days as details become more clear, and that families in the Newtown community may have some semblance of peace during this holiday season. All of our prayers are with those in Newtown."

House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio)

"The horror of this day seems so unbearable, but we will lock arms and unite as citizens, for that is how Americans rise above unspeakable evil.  Let us all come together in God's grace to pray for the families of the victims, that they may find some comfort and peace amid such suffering.  Let us give thanks for all those who helped get people to safety, and take heart from their example.  The House of Representatives -- like every American -- stands ready to assist the people of Newtown, Connecticut."

Rep. George Miller (D-CA)

"Today, my thoughts and prayers are with the parents, families and school employees dealing with the horrific loss of life in Newtown, Connecticut. I join all Americans in grieving for this community suffering from this incomprehensible tragedy.

"Today is for sorrow and prayers. But the days ahead are for serious reflection about how we can reduce the flow of guns into the wrong hands.  One mass shooting after another in America is followed by sincere and painful mourning but no real action to protect the innocent.  We must come together as a nation to honestly discuss how to prevent people intent on carrying out these savage attacks from so easily obtaining guns and ammunition.

The nation is ready for this conversation.  More importantly, though, the safety of children and all Americans demands we have it."

Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.)
"I am in shock and disbelief at this horrible tragedy that took so many innocent lives today. As a father and grandfather, it is beyond my comprehension why anyone would want to hurt innocent children. I join the millions of Americans whose thoughts and hearts are with those suffering because of this horrible crime in Connecticut."

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY)
"Today's horrific act of violence in Newtown, Connecticut is senseless and heartbreaking.  There are no words to express the profound grief we all feel at the loss of so many, especially young children.  My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their friends and family and the entire Newtown community.

"We cannot tolerate mass shootings as a mere inconvenience or a normal part of our everyday lives.  Easy availability of the deadliest weapons to the most dangerous people has cost countless lives and caused immeasurable suffering, never more so than today.   Our expressions of sympathy must be matched with concrete actions to stop gun violence."

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Col.)
"The terrible news out of Connecticut is staggering. Like all Colorado families, my family is grieving and our hearts are with the victims, their families, and all of the students and employees at the school. This is a parent's worst nightmare. As Coloradans, we know how this type of tragedy can shake a community to its core. We are here for Connecticut as they work together to heal in the days ahead."

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.)
"This is a terrible, senseless, incomprehensible tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Newtown and Sandy Hook Elementary School.  I have been in touch with the governor's office and other officials and will do everything in my power to be there for the affected families."

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.)
"As a parent and a public official, my heart and prayers are with these innocent victims, their families, and the entire community. I share the shock of all Connecticut at this hideous, horrific crime of inhuman violence.  I will be in close communication with law enforcement and state and local officials to ensure they receive the federal support and resources they need. "

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo
"I was shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School this morning in Newtown, Connecticut. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the innocent victims -- many of whom were young children -- whose lives were claimed by this senseless and horrific act of violence. During times of such unthinkable tragedy, all New Yorkers stand together with the people of our neighboring state to grieve the loss of life and help bear the pain and anguish that will be felt by so many in the weeks, months, and years to come.

"While we don't have all the facts and our focus must be on the victims, this is yet another senseless and horrific act of violence involving guns. We as a society must unify and once and for all crack down on the guns that have cost the lives of far too many innocent Americans. Let this terrible tragedy finally be the wake-up call for aggressive action and I pledge my full support in that effort."

Sen. Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME)
"Like all Americans, I am shocked and sickened at this reprehensible, heinous act at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Such senseless violence is simply unimaginable and has no place in this great country of ours. As we struggle to comprehend this national tragedy, we stand united in holding the families and loved ones of those lost in our thoughts, and we pray for the full recovery of everyone who has been injured."

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY)
"The horror of what happened is beyond words and leaves a permanent lump in your throat.  To senselessly lose so many innocent lives breaks your heart. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who lost a loved one today, to all who are injured, and to those that survived. The people of New York will help in any way we can as our fellow citizens struggle to comprehend today's events.  Perhaps an awful tragedy like this will bring us together so we can do what it takes to prevent this horror from being repeated again."

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)
"My heart breaks for the victims and families impacted by the senseless act of violence today in Newtown, Connecticut. In a world that can at times be defined by its darkness, children are a reminder of what is good, cheerful and beautiful about life. An act of violence against these defenseless young people, as well as the faculty and staff who dedicate themselves daily to educating and caring for them, is a deed of unconscionable evil. I pray that God holds Newtown close tonight as all of her residents come to terms with this tragedy."

Coppell firefighters and HAZMAT teams were called to the 1400-block of S. Belt Line Road Friday afternoon after several people became ill.

According to Coppell Deputy Fire Chief Eric Greaser, seven people were hospitalized after they became nauseus and began vomiting after smelling methanol.

According to Sharon Logan, with the city of Coppell, several people at Hyundai Motor America were exposed after a barrel was punctured.

Methanol, or methyl alcohol, is a widely used solvent and fuel that can irritate eyes, skin and the respiratory system while causing headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting.  Exposure can, in severe cases, cause blindness, according to the United States Department of Labor.

The Salvation Army spent Friday preparing to distribute Angel Tree gifts.

Dozens of volunteers sorted through tens of thousands of gifts donated through the program to make sure that 58,000 children and seniors across the Metroplex will wake up with a present under the tree Christmas morning.

In the warehouses, storing the gifts there are thousands of boxes that each represent a family.

Karen Bilbrey, who is coordinating the massive operation in Fort Worth, expects 60 families every 20 minutes to pick up gifts Saturday.

Many of them are experiencing hardships in life.

"They never expected to have to do this, so these are the ones that you really feel for," Bilbrey said.

One volunteer, Vicki Stanley, says that after seven years of working with the Angel Tree project -- delegation is the key to getting it all done.

"You have one section, one piece, one job," Stanley said. "You do your portion, and then everybody helps the job gets done."

A job which, at the end of day, means happy children on Christmas morning.

While so many were so generous, not everyone who decided to participate in the program has followed through.

Participants can still take their Angel Tree's unwrapped gifts to one of two Salvation Army Christmas centers.

The Dallas center is located at 9216 Harry Hines Blvd., and the Fort Worth center is at 229 East Felix St.

No Regular Emergency Drills at Some Schools

advertisement

Most Texas schools regularly hold emergency drills as required by law to prepare for events such as shootings, but some districts do not.

Gov. Rick Perry offered his condolences to the victims of Friday's mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school and called for all Texas school districts to review their emergency plans.

The Legislature passed a law in 2005 that mandates that schools develop security plans and regularly practice them so that students and teachers know what to do.

"When something does happen, you hope that you've practiced it enough so that that response becomes automatic," said Fort Worth Independent School District spokesman Clint Bond.

Under the state law, schools are supposed to hold regular evacuation drills in the hallways and classrooms and conduct lockdown drills to teach students and teachers what to do if they become trapped.

"You lock the doors on the inside. You turn off the lights. You get the children away from the windows. You get them out of sight if you look in the door," Bond said.

The Texas School Safety Center surveys school districts to find out how often they rehearse their plans.

Its most recent study found that 124 of the 987 surveyed Texas districts reported that none of their schools conducted lockdown drills once per semester as recommended. Another 89 districts reported that only some of their schools held lockdown drills.

And 93 districts said none of their schools held monthly evacuation drills as recommended.

Large districts such as Fort Worth and Dallas say they conduct the drills at the recommended intervals.

"We drill for this once a month in our schools," Bond said.

The Texas School Safety Center survey found that smaller districts are sometimes less likely to complete the requirements.

The center would not name individual districts out of concern for revealing security weaknesses at specific schools.

Texas schools are also supposed to conduct a security audit once every three years. Forty districts reported that none of their facilities completed such audits. Another 10 said only some of their facilities completed the audits.

State law does not require that the people who conduct the security audits to have any kind of certification.

Districts are asked to use competent personnel, and they're given checklists of guidelines, but there currently is no certification program or designation for people conducting the audits.

The Dallas school district's police chief pointed out Friday that it's impossible to prepare for everything.

"We can do prevention," Chief Craig Miller said. "We can instruct prevention. We can have plans, but those plans can always be thwarted."

Even though Texas is thousands of miles away from the tragedy in Connecticut, North Texans still feel the pain.

Dozens of parents, teachers and students attended a candlelight vigil hosted by Liberty High School students in Frisco on Friday night.

"We wanted to make sure the families know they do have support. There is more than just evil in the world. People are good, and this is just one of those things that can come of tragedies," senior Chelsey Chandler said.

"I think that's what's important -- this needs to be a wakeup call," senior Lauren Tonkovich said. "We all need to start caring more about others and stop being so self-centered and caught up in our own time. I just think that could be a huge help in the future."

"I just could not image what these parents are going through or how you catch your next breath, so my prayers are just with those families," parent Shaw Walker said. "We just have to see the good in each other and come together as a community, as a state, as a country. Our differences don't matter when things like this happen."

Parents attending the high school 3A State Championship game at Cowboys Stadium said news of the school shooting shocked them.

Netha Elliott, who has four young children, said she hugged her youngest when she heard the news.

"Just talk to them about how important it is to tell each other you love each other every day, before school and be so thankful that we make it through life every day," she said.

Parent Laurie Lively said she cried when she heard the news.

"It's hard to know what goes through your mind," she said. "It's confusion. The most astounding thing is what goes through your stomach and your heart -- just totally heartbroken."

TxDOT Turning to High-Mast Lighting

Randy McIlwain, NBC 5 News

Residents say TxDOT's new high-mast lighting that is going up along North Texas highways and interstates is also making their neighborhoods safer.

The Texas Department of Transportation is using what is called high-mast lighting on most of its newer projects, such as the High Five and other improvements along interstates and highways.

The technology is also used by airports because the higher masts throw broader light onto a larger area, becoming the preferred technology to replace old street lighting systems.

One of the unintended consequences is that neighborhoods occasionally are exposed to the brighter lights. But so far, TxDOT says it hasn't heard any complaints.

That could be in part because neighbors in affected areas say the lights actually improve safety and deter crime.

The lights themselves also contain less copper wiring, making them less likely to become the target of thieves, a problem with older model street lights.

TxDOT says drivers can expect to see more high-mast lighting as part of roadway improvement projects.

Parent, Child Recount Connecticut School Shooting

A father and his daughter describe what unfolded during a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

Tales of Horror from Newtown School Shooting

The brother of a student at Sandy Hook Elementary talks about his sister s ordeal during school shooting.

More Photos and Videos

The most famous thing about Newtown, Conn. -- until now -- was perhaps the 100-foot flagpole that has stood in the middle of Main Street since 1876. The pole is a source of community pride, but on Friday night it was also a symbol of sorrow, its flag hanging at half-staff in honor of the 20 children and six adults shot to death hours earlier.

That it happened in a school was the ultimate insult, residents said, because the schools are what continue to draw young families to this quiet, town in Connecticut's southwestern corner, a 90-minute drive from New York City. The schools and the sense of kinship they foster are what keep the place together, they said.

"This is a community, not just a town," said Cathy Masi, a real estate agent whose office window frames the downtown flagpole.

Masi spoke with a determination that didn't seem necessary until the shooting. Because she knows, everyone here knows, that their unpretentious suburban-rural town of 28,000 is going to be tested like never before.

"We are a very strong community," Masi said. "We are going to rally around the families. And we will get through this."

Dark was falling, it was getting cold and hardly anyone was out, other than reporters and satellite trucks. Many residents were waiting for the vigils that would be held at various houses of worship around town. Some posted simple, handwritten signs on their lawns saying they were praying for the victims.

"It's full of love, this town," John Vouros said, standing in the vestibule of his Main Street bed and breakfast, festooned with wreaths and bright ribbons and holiday lights. He paused to catch himself and his eyes got watery. "This is one of those towns where you think, 'This could never happen to us.'"

He waved his arms out at the historic downtown, lined with century-old trees and Colonial-style houses. "It's quiet here. There's no sensationalism. We all got excited when Starbucks came. And now..."

Vouros collected himself again. "Now we're on the map. How ridiculous. How awful."

But Newtown is resilient, he said. "You'll see that over the next few days."

Inside the Trinity Episcopal Church, a few people had walked in off the street to pray. James Curry, bishop suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, fought back tears as he considered the evil that had come to this town. But if Newtown has anything, it is faith, he said. And that will get them through.

"The people here know they have to come together, and they will," Curry said.

Grand Prairie Hospital Now Medicare-Certified

For more than a decade, Grand Prairie was the largest city in the United States without an acute care hospital, but now has a hospital certified for Medicare and Medicaid.

Texas General Hospital, which opened in January near Jefferson Street and Great Southwest Parkway, is now Medicare- and Medicaid-certified.

Hasan Hashmi, hospital chairman, said about 40 percent of the hospital's volume is Medicare and Medicaid patients. Until it was certified, Texas General Hospital provided many of the services for free.

Councilman Mark Hepworth said the city has needed such a facility for years.

"Forever, we've had the title -- and I think it's been 10 or 15 years -- 'the largest city in America without a hospital,'" he said.

Brittany Danielle White said she rushed to the hospital on Wednesday after waking up with unexpected aches. She said living just five minutes from the hospital paid off that day.

"I'm blessed to have a hospital nearby, because I never know what can happen," she said. "I didn't expect any chest pains, so I'm really happy that it was nearby."

Hashmi said the hospital is growing quickly.

"We started off by seeing three or four patients in a 24-hour period," he said. "Now we see about 30 to 40 patients in a 24-hour period in our emergency room. Our operating room volume was about two to three a week. Now, it is over 30 a week."

With about 7,500 patients seen to-date, hospital officials said they are looking forward to an even busier year in 2013.

The hospital is preparing to launch its emergency services in January, adding at least 100 new jobs and providing faster response times in cases of emergency throughout the city. The hospital has hired 175 people during the past year, with more than 150 physicians on staff.

12-Year-Old Recovering From Cardiac Arrest

Five months after her school coach used an AED to save her life, a Frisco 12-year-old is thriving. Her parents have a message for all schools and families.

12-year-old Kylee Shea collapsed in the hallway at school and her coaches Brent Reese and Kristen Goodgion saved her with an automated external defibrillator.

More Photos and Videos

Middle school students in Frisco are learning CPR and how to use a defibrillator as part of an expanded CPR awareness curriculum.

The curriculum gives every sixth-grader in the district hands-on CPR training. It costs less than $10,000 to implement at the district's middle schools.

"If you don't know how to do it and there's somebody who needs it, they can possibly die," sixth-grader Ellee Edgar said.

Last year, seventh-grader Kylee Shea collapsed while walking to gym class after her heart stopped beating.

Her coaches, Kristen Goodgion and Brent Reeese, revived her by performing CPR and using a defibrillator.

"It can't just happen to an adult or to a student running -- it can happen to anybody, anytime," Kylee said.

Since her collapse, the school's coaches and Kylee's mother have been crucial in creating and championing the training.

"That was the biggest driving force is we need to get the word out," Goodgion said. "We need to get everybody prepared to do what they need to do."

Seventh- and eighth-graders in physical education classes will also receive the training.

"It's amazing, because two ordinary people can do it," Kylee said. "It's not just coaches. Everybody can do it."

Brown was killed in the crash, and Brent was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter.

In the 911 calls, two different callers report an upside-down vehicle on the frontage road to State Highway 114 near Rochelle and O'Connor roads.

One of the callers reported seeing smoke coming from the vehicle, and the other said the car was on fire.

In the short video, Brent's car can be seen upside down in the roadway. Video of other activity at the crash site was not released.

Brown remembered at vigil in hometown

A memorial was held Thursday evening in St. Louis at Brown's former high school to honor the athlete.

Three dozen people holding candles and pictures talked outside Vashon High School about their memories of Brown.

Brown's mother, Stacey Jackson, said she had spoken to Brent and forgives him.

"I talked to Josh today before we came to the vigil, and I just told him to keep his head up; we're praying for him," she said. "And I still love him. He can call me at four in the morning; he can call me at twelve crying -- I don't care, because Jerry loved him like a brother."

Brent is just like one of her sons, she said.

"It was an accident. We were all young once. We've all done something stupid; we've all regretted what we've done, but we're here to live and see another day," she said. "Jerry's accident was God's way to tell us it was time for his servant to come home. And then Josh -- to get from this, he needs to go out and teach other people and reach other players and let them know never be ashamed to call and ask for a ride. Never be embarrassed, because that's what that service is there for."

Prosecutor expects grand jury to hear case next month

Dallas County Assistant District Attorney Harris Heath said Thursday he is confident the intoxication-manslaughter case will go to trial.

"The fact that Mr. Brent is a Dallas Cowboy or any attention this case has gotten -- we're not going to treat it any differently," he said.

Heath, whom Irving police briefed on the case, said he would look at all the factors, including evidence from the scene, such as sobriety tests.

The day of the crash, Irving police said Brent was arrested after failing a field sobriety test.

Exclusive police documents obtained by NBC 5 show that Brent failed tests such as the walk-and-turn, one-leg stand and visual sobriety tests that required him to follow light stimulus with his eyes. According to the documents, the responding officer said Brent "could not stand without swaying and following the green light stimulus that I was using. Mr. Price-Brent even caught himself swaying."

Heath said he expects a grand jury to take the case by January.

"Josh ought to get the same fair shake from the system that anybody else gets," said George Milner, Brent's attorney.

Brent is free on $500,000 bail.

Whooping Cough Cases on Rise

A student at Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth has been diagnosed with whooping cough.

North Texas doctors are seeing an uptick in cases of pertussis, which is more commonly known as whooping cough.

So far this year in Tarrant County, 135 cases have been reported.

A student at Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth is the latest case. The school sent a letter home to parents telling them of the case and to monitor their children.

Administrators told NBC 5 that the sick student is not in school at this time.

Dr. Jeffrey Kahn, the director of infectious diseases at Children's Medical Center in Dallas, said the hospital saw 14 cases in all of 2011 but had 113 cases this year through November.

Kahn said younger children -- infants to six months old -- are hit the hardest. Even though the children could have already started their pertussis shots, their immune systems aren't strong enough to fight the highly contagious cough, he said.

Children usually contract the cough from family members, Kahn said.

"Basically, all the cases that we've seen here -- very young children -- there's a history of someone in the household who has had a long chronic cough and they don't recognize that cough as being pertussis," he said.

The cough is treated with an antibiotics regiment, Kahn said.

A Dallas artist is offering a reward for the safe return of two works of art stolen while on display at a gallery earlier this week.

Two of the smaller pieces in Rolondo Diaz's current collection on display at the Janette Kennedy Gallery at South Side on Lamar were stolen Tuesday night.

"It's not even so much the stealing of the work of art -- even though I haven't had that happen to me in the past -- it's the fact that what they took is very personal," he said.

Diaz said the mixed-media pieces have a special significance -- they are part of a collection created to honor his brother, Christian, who recently died of leukemia.

"The pieces that were stolen actually had photographs of me and my brother as children, just like this like here -- my favorite photograph from Havana," he said while pointing to another piece on display.

The building's surveillance video is being checked for clues.

The Cuban-American artist incorporated snapshots and other childhood memories on many of the pieces in his current collection at the JK Gallery.

"I am inspired by all things in life," Diaz said. "I believe that art is the expression of life and, in this particular, the show was definitely inspired by the struggles I saw my brother go through for two and a half years."

Diaz said he and his brother always shared a special bond and he wants the paintings back -- no questions asked.

This is the 10th year for his annual exhibition at the gallery, which continues through Dec. 26.

Man Attempts 3 Failed Carjackings in Same Parking Lot

An unknown man attempted to carjack three different victims in the same shopping center parking lot in southern California on Thursday, officials said.

According to police, the carjacking attempts happened around 2:50 p.m. in the parking lot of a Target store in Oceanside, Calif.

In the first attempt, the suspect allegedly approached a woman as she was exiting her car. He showed her what she believed was a knife and ordered her back into the vehicle. She got inside and drove away, leaving the suspect behind, police said.

The man then immediately approached another woman exiting her car in the lot. Police said he brandished a handgun and told her to get back inside her car.

The victim ignored the suspect and ran into the Target store to report the attempted carjacking.

Police said the man then approached a third woman in the same parking lot who was getting out of her car. He attempted to steal her vehicle at gunpoint, ordering her to remove the club device from her steering wheel and leave her keys in the car.

The victim complied, removed the club and left the keys in the car. Before walking away, she activated some sort of kill-switch that disabled the ignition.

The man tried to start the car but instead became locked inside the vehicle.

He smashed through a window to get out and fled the scene, police said.

None of the three victims was injured.

Police searched the area for the suspect but were unable to immediately locate him. He remains outstanding.

Officers describe the suspect as a white male in his 40s to 60s with a thin build and "leathery" skin. He was carrying a black backpack and was described by witnesses as transient in his appearance. He wore a blue denim jacket, pink shirt and blue jeans.

The investigation is ongoing.

New Survey Shows More Young Drivers Surfing the Web

Experts say texting is bad enough, but now many teen drivers are also surfing the web while driving. State Farm Insurance says 48 percent of people aged 18 to 29 have used the internet on their cell phones while behind the wheel. Gordon Tokumatsu reports from Northridge for the NBC4 News at 6 p.m. on November 27, 2012.

Smartphone Addicts Get Therapy in Costa Mesa

For Christiana Ike, not having her phone provokes extreme anxiety. She has three phones and carries 2 phone chargers with her at all times. She even takes her phone with her in the shower. Ike belongs to a support group at Morningside recovery Center in Costa Mesa to help curb his addiction, dubbed Nomophobia. Dr. Bruce Hensel reports for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on Nov. 1, 2012.

Nearly one in three pedestrians is distracted by a mobile device while crossing a busy street, and texting appears to be the most distracting and potentially most dangerous activity, according to a new study.

The study, published Wednesday in the journal Injury Prevention, looked at pedestrians crossing 20 busy intersections in Seattle in the summer of 2012. It concluded that nearly one out of three pedestrians was engaged in some distracting activity, including taking on the phone, listening to music, talking with others, or dealing with children or pets.

Pedestrians who were texting took, on average, 2 seconds longer to cross busy streets and were less likely to pay attention to traffic while doing it.

Distracted drivers took the lives of more than 3,000 people in 2010, according to the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration, which has an ongoing initiative related to the issue. Cell phone use was reported in 18 percent of all distraction-related fatalities, according to the NTHSA.

State legislatures have taken notice.

The authors of the distracted pedestrian study recommend studying intervention efforts to reduce the risk of pedestrian injury. They suggest an approach similar to the "don't drink and drive" campaign.

Dozens of workers at American Airlines maintenance base at Alliance Airport are losing their jobs Friday.

Workers tell NBC 5 an estimated 90 employees jobs are being cut immediately, as many as 250 workers could be let go right before the holidays.

Employees say they're being called in three people at a time to get their final paperwork.  One laid-off worker tells NBC 5, he's disappointed American Airlines CEO/President Tom Horton didn't show up for their last day on the job.

The hangar won't shut down immediately. The Transport Workers Union said the shutdown is expected in March 2013.

The engine shop and test cell will continue to operate under the bankruptcy plan.

About 1,100 jobs at the Alliance facility are being cut, but not everyone will be laid off.

Nearly 700 employees are transferring to other positions. Some workers opted for early retirement.

American Airlines was the first tenant at Alliance Airport 23 years ago. The company makes up about three percent of the workforce at the location.

Neighboring businesses expect to feel the pain from the loss.

"It would really hurt our business, and yes, we talk to our customers about it and they're very, like they don't know what's going to happen or anything," said Betty Yeary, manager at Snooty Pig Restaurant. "So we're all concerned about it."

The Chamber of Commerce tells NBC 5 that half a dozen companies have already looked at possibly moving into the 1.6 million square foot facility.

A lot of work done at the Alliance location will be outsourced to other companies.

A Fort Worth restaurant that specializes in party catering is losing business after the theft of its customized catering trailer.

Thieves stole the fully equipped food trailer that Chimy's Cerveceria uses to cater gigs all over the Metroplex.

The trailer was taken from the spot where it has sat outside the restaurant for three years without incident.

Surveillance cameras show a small sport utility vehicle pull alongside the trailer at about 4 a.m. The video shows a person get out and work on the trailer's lock before the SUV backs up and takes the trailer.

The trailer has a custom paint job in a loud circus them -- something that is impossible to hide and perhaps even more difficult to sell.

Chimy's general manager Wes Lunsford said the trailer's value, fully equipped, is about $20,000.

The theft is forcing Chimy's to cancel some larger catering jobs over the holidays that would have earned the restaurant the value of the trailer itself several times over.

"We've got caterings lined up for the next two weeks until Christmas and then, obviously, New Year and lots of holiday parties and stuff going on that we usually used that trailer for," Lunsford said.

Whoever stole the vehicle is going to great lengths to hide it, possibly paint it and either start a business of their own or sell it.

All of that adds up to work ethic, said Lunsford.

"Come down and apply for a job -- how about that?" he said. "We've got some catering gigs to do, so we could always use some help."

Chimy's is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the trailer.

CSU Fullerton Slowly Reopens After Hours-Long Lockdown

Students and faculty were allowed to leave Cal State Fullerton just before midnight Wednesday, hours after the university was put on a modified lockdown prompted by two men fleeing onto campus, wanted in connection with an armed robbery that sparked two separate high-speed pursuits. Vikki Vargas reports from Fullerton for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Dec. 12, 2012.

CSU Fullerton Locked Down After High-Speed Chase

A wild police chase that started as a bank robbery in Moreno Valley put Cal State Fullerton on lockdown Wednesday after one of the wanted men fled from the car onto campus. Alex Calder reports from NewsChopper 4 for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on Dec. 12, 2012.

Students and faculty were allowed to leave a California university just before midnight Wednesday, hours after California State University, Fullerton was put on a modified lockdown prompted by two men fleeing onto the campus, wanted in connection with an armed robbery that sparked two separate high-speed pursuits.

Three men were taken into custody earlier Wednesday following separate car chases apparently started after a violent heist at a Southern California pawn shop. At least one man remained at large late Wednesday.

At 11 p.m., the university tweeted this notice: "Police are beginning to clear building occupants. Please remain in place until directed by Police or audio announcement."

Shortly before midnight, the university tweeted this: "Cal State Fullerton Important Message. All buildings are now clear and occupants are free to leave."

MORE: Clerk Shot 4 Times in Robbery That Sparked Pursuits, Lockdown

The complicated situation developed after five men wearing ski masks robbed at pawn shop in Moreno Valley at about 3 p.m., shooting an employee of the store. California Highway Patrol officers responded to a call describing the suspect vehicle and pursued it to Fullerton.

At 3:47 p.m., the pursuit ended after the car exited the Orange (57) Freeway and stopped after it was involved in a minor collision in front of the university campus, Fullerton police Sgt. Jeff Stuart said during a quickly called news conference about 5

Nearly 10,000 students were at the university preparing for next week's finals when two men fled onto campus, where one was immediately taken into custody. The other man fled into Mihaylo Hall, a 200,000-square-foot building, Stuart said.

The three other man fled southbound from campus. One was taken into custody, and another carjacked a vehicle and led authorities on a high-speed chase that ended with his arrest in Watts. The third man from that group remained at large, Stuart said.

SWAT team members were searching the area, he said. A perimeter had been set up to search for the suspect who had fled into the city streets of Fullerton, where it began to rain about 6 p.m.

"We had a large number of students were able to flee the building where the suspect ran into. They've been evacuated from the campus. Those students and staff members that are still on campus are in what's called a shelter in place," Stuart said. "Our goal is to go around and rescue those individuals . as we do our search. This is going to be an all-night operation."

He later added, "It's a huge campus, so it's a very daunting task."

Three buildings on campus were on modified lockdown, where students were told to shelter in place, Stuart said. A student in one of the locked-down buildings said he witnessed officers checking every classroom.

"A cop came running through and he said, 'They have guns, they have guns,'" said another witness, Shant Fermanian. "So all these people started rushing so me and my cousin, we looked up, and we just got out of there as soon we can. We had no idea what was going on."

Fermanian said he saw a man, who was later taken into custody, run around a nearby building but did not see any weapons.

Christine Accetta, locked down in McCarthy Hall, tweeted a photo about 6:30 p.m., pictured below, of a barricade students created inside a classroom. Four hours later, Accetta tweeted: "We have been released!"

Another student, Raquel Mireles, said the university had been regularly in touch with students via text message with updates on the developing situation.

"They're just trying ... to keep us safe," Mireles said, who said she was in College Park. "They're being really helpful. The cops have come through and told us to stay calm."

She said the blinds had been closed in the classroom she was in, and chairs had been placed in front of the door.

"The lights are off. We're kind of just all huddled together right now," Mireles said.

While she talked on air to NBC4, a loudspeaker announcement told her to evacuate the building.

The five men allegedly robbed a pawn shop in Moreno Valley in the 24500 block of Sunnymead Boulevard (map) around 3 p.m. Authorities there said the men wore ski masks and used handguns.

An employee at the store was shot; he was in stable condition, according to Riverside County Sheriff's Department Deputy Albert Martinez. He said it remains unclear what, if anything, was stolen from the store.

After the sheriff's department put out a description of the getaway vehicle in Moreno Valley, CHP officers spotted the car and a pursuit began.

Just after the pursuit ended in Fullerton, one of the men car-jacked another vehicle, prompting a second chase, which wound through freeways and surface streets. The driver blew through several stop signs and red lights in residential areas of Compton.

The man abandoned his stolen car in Watts and ran through a crowded area before surrendering -- spread eagle, as shown at right -- on a baseball field at Imperial Courts Recreation Center at 2250 E. 114th St. (map).

The recreation center is surrounded by Imperial Courts, a nearly 500-unit public housing project, and was hosting a toy drive held by the Los Angeles Police Department.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck was among those in attendance and immediately began chasing the man as he headed toward the baseball diamond, away from dozens of police officers gathered at the park.

That driver was taken into custody.

NBC4's Vikki Vargas contributed to this report.

Dallas police are asking for the public's help in finding whoever beat a corporate attorney so badly that he is now in a medically induced coma.

James Porter, a bartender at the Crown and Harp bar, found 39-year-old Damien Falgoust on Greenville Avenue, just north of Ross, early Friday morning.

"I called 911 and put the gentleman on his side -- he was lying on his back," Porter said. "I ran in and got some towels to put under his head."

Relatives said Falgoust was at the Knox Street Pub earlier that night. Friends saw him leave in a taxi at about 1:30 a.m. He was discovered unconscious outside the Crown and Harp 30 minutes later.

Paramedics were able to get Falgoust alert and talking at the scene.

"He was saying, 'I just want to go home. I just want to go home. I live right around the corner, and I want to go home,'" Porter said. "The firefighters were smart enough to know that he wasn't."

According to online updates posted by his sister, Falgoust is in a medically induced coma with multiple skull fractures and severe bleeding on his brain.

Dallas police said they don't believe robbery was a motive for the attack because Falgoust still had his cellphone and wallet on him at the hospital.

Friends from the kickball team Falgoust plays on are planning a fundraiser for Sunday. They have also set up an online account to raise money for his medical care.

Belize Authorities Look For McAfee Founder After Neighbor Killed

Police in the Central American nation of Belize said Monday that they are looking for John McAfee, the founder of the software company McAfee Inc. to question him about the slaying of another U.S. citizen, his neighbor Gregory Viant Faull, in an island town on the Caribbean.

More Photos and Videos

Internet entrepreneur John McAfee – wanted for questioning by Belizean officials in the slaying of an American expatriate – told reporters in South Beach Wednesday night that he will speak with police in Belize if they come to the U.S.

"If they want to come here and talk to me, I'd be more than happy to talk to them, yes," he said outside the Beacon Hotel, where he is staying.

McAfee posted a message on his blog at 1:15 a.m. Thursday asking the media to respect his privacy. He also had dinner in South Beach before returning to the hotel around 2:30 a.m.

Miami International Airport spokesman Greg Chin said the American Airlines commercial jet carrying McAfee landed shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday.

McAfee confirmed that he was taken off the plane before everyone else.

"They stopped the airplane before it reached the gate. They had everybody sit down and then they said 'Is John McAfee on the plane, please come forward,'" said the 67-year-old creator of the McAfee antivirus program. "And there were a whole bunch of officers. I thought, gee, this is continuing. And they said, 'Well, we're here to help you sir, please come with us.' And they whisked me away from you people."

McAfee was released from detention in Guatemala earlier in the day, the Department of Immigration in Guatemala told NBC News.

He said he had no choice about coming to Miami.

"I said, sir, I had no choice. They put me on an airplane. I am here," he said.

As McAfee was escorted by Guatemalan immigration officials to the Guatemala City airport, he said, "I'm free. I'm going to America."

Chin said that McAfee would not exit from Immigration and Customs to the public area of the airport. "His exit will be handled post-security by federal authorities," Chin said.

Nestor Yglesias, a spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations in Miami, said he did not know about any special procedures in place for McAfee's arrival.

McAfee went on the run last month after Belizean officials tried to question him about Gregory Viant Faull, who was shot to death in early November.

McAfee acknowledges that his dogs were bothersome and that Faull had complained about them, but denies killing Faull.

Faull's home was a couple of houses down from McAfee's compound in Ambergris Caye, off Belize's Caribbean coast.

McAfee said in South Beach that he's "not worried at all" about being extradited to Belize.

"If I'm in front of a court, there's nothing in the world they will do to send me back. They have no evidence, I have tons of evidence about the corruption, the harassment, beginning with the attack on my property in April," he said. "I mean, of course I'm not worried. I'd be happy to go in front of a judge – just not one in Belize."

McAfee had been detained last week for immigration violations after he sneaked into Guatemala from neighboring Belize. But Wednesday, Guatemalan immigration service spokesman Fernando Lucero said McAfee was being expelled from the country.

"McAfee entered the country illegally," Lucero said. "Guatemala is expelling him. Since his country of origin is the United States, Guatemala is expelling him to the United States."

As McAfee was expelled from the country, he told Bloomberg Television in a phone exchange that he was "perfectly happy with the decision."

Belizean authorities had been urging McAfee to show up for questioning in the killing, but have not lodged any formal charges against him.

McAfee said he feared he would be killed if he turned himself in to Belizean authorities. In the interview with Bloomberg on Wednesday, McAfee said he has offered to talk to the police "numerous times on the phone."

But "it's not an issue of talking about a murder," he said. "It's an issue of putting their hands on my person."

McAfee's escort to the Guatemala City airport marked the latest chapter for McAfee's strange, monthlong odyssey to avoid police questioning about the killing.

In one of the most highly publicized flights from police questioning since O.J. Simpson led police on televised low-speed car chase, McAfee constantly blogged and spoke with reporters about his life on the lam.

Bystanders in Guatemala City stopped to stare at the passing police convoy, and people at the airport massed around the immigration truck carrying McAfee, straining to take pictures of him with their cell phones.

McAfee suggested his weeklong detention in Guatemala for entering the country clandestinely had taken its toll on him.

"All I can tell you is I'm 10 years older, and I don't know what I'm doing. I'm just going to Miami," he said.

His 20-year-old Belizean girlfriend who has accompanied him since he went on the run was not with him on the ride to the airport. She was last seen early Wednesday leaving the detention facility crying, after bringing McAfee breakfast.

The British-born McAfee has led an eccentric life since he sold his stake in the software company named after him in the early 1990s and moved to Belize about three years ago to lower his taxes.

He told The New York Times in 2009 that he had lost all but $4 million of his $100 million fortune in the U.S. financial crisis. However, a story on the Gizmodo website quoted him as describing that claim as "not very accurate at all."

McAfee is an acknowledged practical joker who has dabbled in yoga, ultra-light aircraft and the production of herbal medications.

On Sunday he said he yearned to be in the United States and "settle down to whatever normal life" he can.

"I simply would like to live comfortably day by day, fish, swim, enjoy my declining years," he said.

But on Wednesday night, he said he doesn't have a plan for what's next.

"I'm here, I'm hungry, I plan to eat. That's basically it," McAfee said, adding a moment later, "If you've ever tasted Guatemalan jail food, it's not very nice, and I'd like some sushi."

Midlothian police are looking for a man who drove a stolen vehicle into four other cars, then ran on foot Thursday morning.

According to police, someone drove a pickup into a local convenience store, stole cigarettes and took off at about 4 a.m. in Midlothian.

Soon after, a police officer tried stopping a black Chevrolet pickup that matched the description of the vehicle used in the convenience store robbery. The pickup had been reported stolen in Ellis County at about 10 p.m. Wednesday night, police said.

The pickup took off, leading police on a chase through the streets of Midlothian. The chase ended on the 600-block of E. Ave F after the truck smashed into four parked cars and wound up on the lawn of one of a home.

No one was injured.

The driver fled on foot, leading police on a manhunt through the neighborhood. Ellis County Sheriffs brought in K-9 units to help search, but did not find the man.

Police say they found a pistol inside the vehicle.

Police say they have good evidence about the identity of the driver and have called off the search.

A Richland Hills man called 911 and told the operator that he had carved a pentagram on the back of his 6-year-old son, police say.

Father Accused of Carving Pentagram Into Son

Richland Hills police say Brent Troy Bartel is accused of carving a pentagram on his 6-year-old son's back, telling a 911 dispatcher that he did it because "it's a holy day."

A Richland Hills man has been arrested and charged with assaulting his son after telling a 911 operator he carved a pentagram into his 6-year-old son's back.

Just after midnight Wednesday, officers were dispatched to a home in the 3700 block of Ruth Road after the boy's father, identified by police as Brent Troy Bartel, called 911 and said: "I shed some innocent blood."

When the dispatcher asked what the man meant by that, the man replied: "I inscribed a pentagram on my son."

The dispatcher asked why, and the man said: "It's a holy day."

At the same time, the child's mother called 911 from a neighbor's home and said her husband was hurting their child.

Officers arrived at the home and found the child cold, standing in only pajama pants with a large pentagram carved into his back. The carving covered most of the boy's back, police said.

Officers wrapped the boy in a jacket and turned him over to paramedics.  The child was transported to Cooks Children's Hospital for treatment.  Child Protective Services and a crime victim liaison are working with the boy and his mother.

Police said Wednesday afternoon that the carving wasn't deep enough to require stitches and that the child is expected to physically recover.

At the scene, officers also recovered a box cutter they believe Bartel used to make the carving.

Bartel was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon-family member.  He is currently being held on $500,000 bond.

The father's call to 911 was placed at 12:10 a.m., just minutes after the day 12-12-12 began.

It is not clear what Bartel meant by calling Wednesday "a holy day."

However, Catholics celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12. And the Dec. 12, 2012, date, along with Dec. 21, 2012, has draw attention from numerologists and those concerned with doomsday prophecy.

Bartel's bizarre behavior has landed him in jail before. He was arrested in 2007, according to the Lancaster New Era. Bartel had been in court to fight at $25 traffic ticket for an illegal turn. Bartel approached the judge, turned over his drivers' license, and proclaimed he's done as a truck driver. He then tried to punch the police officer who gave him the ticket.  It took three officers and an attorney to wrestle him to the floor.

An Irving pharmacy says a change to a major health insurance provider's prescription plan threatens small, independently owned pharmacies.

UnitedHealthcare notified members last month of changes to its AARP MedicareRX prescription plans.

Independent pharmacists say the changes keep them out of the insurance provider's preferred retail pharmacy network, meaning customers must pay more to stay with them.

"To possibly lose them through no fault of your own -- that's really aggravating," said Brian Smith, pharmacist and owner of Big State Drug Store in downtown Irving.

Smith said that network excludes independent pharmacies like his.

"So that means my 100-plus patients, if they want to continue to use my store, it'll cost them more money than if they go to a store that is in their network," he said.

In a statement, UnitedHealthcare reps said its preferred pharmacy network provides members with more than 14,600 locations nationwide, including 360 in the Metroplex.

Prescription sales make up about 90 percent of Big State Drug Store's business. That is the case for most independently owned pharmacies throughout the country, according to the National Community Pharmacists Association.

Mitchell McPherson, who has been a customer since 1999, said he is willing to pay the extra cost as long as he can afford it.

"It's an extension of my family, in both service and personalities," he said.

Pharmacists said they hope there can be a happier ending.

"We've grown relationships with these people and to see them go off just because the insurance companies are forcing them to -- and we don't get to have that relationship anymore -- that's ... huge," pharmacist Kim Heaton said.

Demolition crews worked for more than 12 hours Tuesday to safely bring down what was left of Tarrant County's first hospital.

The only remaining wall of the 12-story building at Main and and Morphy streets took longer than expected to demolish.

NBC 5 received word that the wall at the site of the vacant St. Joseph Hospital complex was swaying and that the demolition was halted. When the area, including a nearby roadway was cordoned off, it appeared there was concern over where the wall may come down.

Officials with D.H. Griffin of Texas, the company doing the demolition work, said the lane closure along the 1400 block of South Main Street was expected. The company said it was submitted to the city and done as a precaution only.

It is not clear if the wall was ever unintentionally unstable.

The final facade came down at about 8:30 p.m. Crews had to use three metal cables to pull the building down to keep it from collapsing onto Main Street.

One of the demolition crew members told NBC 5 that everything went as planned.

St. Joseph's was founded by nuns in 1885 as the county's first hospital. The complex eventually spanned 10 buildings and was bought by John Peter Smith Hospital in 2008 for $5.1 million. The facility has been vacant since 2004.

More than 20,000 bricks were salvaged from the demolition that will be used to build a memorial to commemorate St. Joseph's.

JPS plans to convert the land into a 6-acre green space with a quarter-mile walking track.

NBC 5's Chris Van Horne, Scott Gordon and Omar Villafranca contributed to this report.
